  1. As the above, nothing wrong with a bit of plywood if it sounds good (it even rhymes). It has similar connotations as basswood, often associated with cheap and crap basses, but Ernie Ball uses it for their Bongo's which are neither crap nor cheap.
  2. It is pretty much te same pre as the DoubleFour, with a 100w instead of a 70w D class power amp. It will be clean, not brittle and build quality like all PJB stuff will be good. For the right price a good amp. The DoubleFour already was quite loud and this amp has bigger speakers (the 30w more will have minimal impact on extra volume, the bigger speaker surface area will).
  3. Great build, great guy. Miss my Rumour still, should never have sold it.
  4. I have had several Mesa amps over the years, outside the full valve 400(+] and Buster the M600 and BB750 are the closest I ever got to the “perfect” bass sound. Great amps, GLWTS!
  5. Matrix and QSC are both great suggestions.
  6. Soon to be 5000 in real money.... 😎
  7. I read somewhere they are the loudest acoustic you can get. Congrats!
  8. I’ve really been digging Ernie Ball Cobalt Flats on my fretless , really bright flatwounds that mwaah just so readily.
  9. Gorgeous bass! You are a lucky man.
  10. I won’t post any pics of my FI then..... Darn good synth pedal.....
  11. Congrats on the buy, this is not a case about better or worse btw so if it fits your needs I think you will be very happy with it. MXR make good stuff for bass.
  12. Action was lowered considerably when I set it up to suit me (after I got it), no fretwork needed. BTW if you think that action is high, check out John Pattituci’s or Macca’s action, some people just prefer it.
  13. I am taking it to band practice tomorrow for a “full volume” test, but thus far I am really impressed. For a passive bass it packs a real punch, the neck pickup is like a P on steroids, Bridge has the “jazz” vibe but with much more body and both pickups sounds like a TB to my ears. When I get back from my business trip I will record a few bits so you can hear for yourselves.
  14. Oh dear, I used his pre for years. RIP mr. Hall, you will be missed.
  15. Rubber washer under the knobs, inexpensive and it works. Mentioned several times.
  16. I have the 1000, these are great D class power stages. Great solution for when you have a pre (or a Helix) and don't have or want a powered speaker.
  17. After several years being P-less, early this year I needed a more classical sounding bass for a covers project. Ultimately I ended up trading basses with the rather wonderful Misowaki and got his '57 Precision. A great example of an AVRI if ever there was one. Since buying it I upgraded the pickup to a '62 Custom shop and added an Emerson wiring loom (oil cap) and Hipshot Classic bridge (original bridge included in the sale). It is now the mother of all AVRI P's. Full disclosure, when taking off the bridgecover I noticed the paint had chipped, so there is a 3x3mm chip around the screw. More mojo For the rest it is in the exact shape as the original pics in the thread below. I recently completed the conversion/mod of on of my Bogart Blackstones, added 2 Thunderbucker 66 pickups (see build thread if you are so inclined). That thing sounds incredible and the front pickup gives me a wonderful Precision tone, and as a self-confessed Bogart fanboy I have now decided I no longer need the P for my vintage tones, opening the door for more graphite or more cabs/amps in my life (or more money ). So ideally am looking to do a trade against something with a graphite neck, Mesa bass gear, Bergantino, TKS, Barefaced, perhaps another fretless .... another Bogart?? Well maybe 3 is enough. Anyway, open to trade offers. Also happy to sell outright. Price excludes shipping in a Hiscox case (original Fender one was not included when I got it), all the AVRI case candy is included (ashtrays/strap/lead etc). I have added more pics of the current setup.
  18. +1 on great sounding basses, I used to own a 4 string. Absolute joy to play and sounded great. Really good price.
  19. So yesterday I installed the pickups, pots, wiring etcetera for a test run. I actually do not have a clue how to wire a Thunderbird yet, so for now I did Jazz style wiring. Sounded pretty good already, although a bit noisy for my taste (unshielded as yet) and the tone pot (reused from a loom I had) has some issues so needs replacing by a new one. But on the whole it is safe to say this thing is going to be a tone monster. The front pickup is a bit further back than a true TB so it is a bit clearer, almost P like. The back pickup is “close to exact” and gives a nice mid bite. I will post final pics and some sound clips when all done. Whilst I am pretty comfortable with wiring/routing etc, the scratchplate was a concern. All worked out well (although I have a few small nitpicks as you would expect) so I am very happy....... on to the next one
  20. You can clearly see the polycarbonate shell, acoustic foam on quite a thin piece of wooden backbone in this picture.
  21. Sure no probs to snap some pics! The outer polycarbonate shell is about 3-4mm. I had assumed there was a wooden solid centre block, but I was routing in acoustic foam and polycarbonate mainly. This really surprised me Anyway, I decided to go with a straight knob layout to stay in the TB theme. Scratchplate finished, holes drilled so getting closer to completion. Since I made the pic I installed the pots etc. Forgot to buy pickguard screws and shielding so will need to buy that tomorrow. I’ll be fully done next weekend,
