1. Some picture of the damage to lacquer on body and headstock. The bass weighs 9.6lb and the nut is 39mm. Thanks, Darren
2.
Not quite what you're asking, but...if I were in your shoes I'd be all over the Yamaha BB424x in the For Sale section.
This.
3. It's a lot of bass at £300. I bought a vw 424 a couple of weeks or I would have had this. Shame you haven't taken to it as they are fantastic instruments. Best colour in the x version as well IMO. GLWTS.
4. I've been playing flats for a few years now and love them but I recently bought a new bass with rounds fitted. I have to say they make a refreshing change. I used to get a lot of fret noise with my now retired p bass and I think that is probably why I moved to flats in the first place. The frets were a little higher near the body so the strings clanked off them a bit. The neck is super straight on my new bass and the frets are nice and level so no unwanted fret noise. There when you want it in a percussive way.
5. Hi Byo, the weight is comfortable but we don't have and scales in the house so I can't give you a number I'm afraid. I could take it to a friends to weigh though. In my world it's medium weight in that my MIA precision is slightly heavier and my Yamaha BB424 feels a tad lighter. Not very helpful I know. The nut is 47mm end to end and the radius feels quite flat to me. In terms of fret wear, there isn't any. The bass is in very good condition. BW, Darren
6.
This beauty used to be my bass but the neck profile didn't suit me. Deal with Darren in confidence, he's one of the good guys.
Thanks Neil - hope all is well!
7. For sale is my fender Japan 57 reissue - made around 2004-2006. The bass has an Alder body and maple neck and is fitted with fender vintage 58 pickups, a kiogon wiring kit replete with cts pots and a switchcraft jack, and la Bella fl760 flatwound strings. The new electrics and strings were fitted by Steve, The Manchester Guitar Tech, less than a year ago. Steve set the bass up as well so it not only sounds the bomb but it plays really nicely too. I have the original parts that will of course be part of the sale. I've heard people talk about that "fender precision thump" sound but until I got this bass back from Steve I didn't really know what that sound was. Now I do. Anyhow, This thread should be made sticky as a warning against GAS. £600 firm or trade for a Yamaha BB1024, ideally in vintage white. The fender is in very good condition so trade bass would have to be in good condition also. There are 2 or 3 very minor marks to the lacquer on the top of the headstock and one on the body (can't remember where). I'll try to capture these in a photo. Bass comes with tweed hard case. Local pickup only at the moment. Based in Manchester.
8. Anything with LEDs should get you a seat at this table
9. I had an LD 175 some years back. It was a bit heavy to shift around but I found some tones in it that I really liked and kept in the pre-sets. The one criticism I had was that it didn't have a clean tone I.e. there was always some kind of effect in play. Didn't bother me too much to be honest. The only reason I shifted it was to get something more powerful - and lighter.
10. Off work today and been noodling on this for a while. Still scratching my head at how good it is for what I paid.
11. Very pleasantly surprised at how good this bass if for the money (£260). The bass sounds great and the finish on the body is excellent. The neck will take a little getting used to as there is no finish on it so it feels a bit unfamiliar - it's a little on the narrow side too. Great bass.
12. This is mine. It was made in 2004 I think. I changed out the pickups for fender vintage 58s, put in a kiogon wiring loom with cts pots and put some la bella flats on it. It's a nice piece of wood that is very well put together and it sounds like the real deal to me.
13. This guy is not convinced about the whole tone wood thing. Interesting video. http://youtu.be/mVmFlzksMCE
14. She's a beauty. I'd be proud to own a bass like that.
15. Ed Friedland comments here that the ceramic (jazz-position) has more bite and the alnico (p-position) is warmer. Does this mean the 424, in comparison to the 2025, will have a more aggressive p sound? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rscMwAdyhLE
16. buy a fender rumble rig - the amp is kept in place on the cab with magnets.
17. Thomann do a home brand p bass and jazz bass kit for £70 http://www.thomann.de/gb/harley_benton_bassguitar_kit_pstyle.htm
18. Try beefing up with a behringer DBI21?
19. This is where I started... http://youtu.be/s72wZ87tTxk
20. Great thanks.I've read a lot of posts saying 1024 is superior to 424 but I've never been sure of the reference poin, I.e. is 424 equivalent to squier and 1024 equivalent to fender us - or whatever.
21. I've been thinking of buying a 424 but I do keep looking at the 1024. I need to get to a shop that has both. Is the 424 as good a bass as a squirt? In terms of build and usable tone? I mean squier... Blooming autocorrect!
22.
Anyway you cut it, she's "big time" and I'm not. And where I come from it would have been considered a big score. As in the difference between telling your mates; " I'm on tour with Cher " and "Oh, I'm playing at Willies Burger Pub Friday night". Blue
That's true. Gets your name out there etc. any idea what the money was like out of interest?
23.
Depends on the situations you end up in. Back in the 80s I auditioned for a tour with Cher. Got to the audition, the band was ready to go and they handed me sheet music for a polka. I don't read music, I was told the gig wasn't for me and was asked to leave. Say anything you want, I felt like an idiot. Blue
I can't think of anything worse than listening to Cher singing for hour on end every other night.
24. My first p bass, in around 1994, was a shaftsbury copy of the 50s p so no split pickup there. Then I had a mustang that mush have had some age to it and weighed more than me. It had to go. In 1996 I got the first p bass that I actually liked, a MIA fender in blue. More recently I play a MIJ 58 reissue. This bass has an upgraded wiring kit with cts pots, fender vintage 58 pickups and a set of la bella flatwound strings. Sounds great. I still have the shaftsbury and the MIA in blue but sadly the MIA has a broken truss rod. Will need to buy a replacement neck for it I guess. Probably a custom warmoth. Currently thinking about buying a Yamaha BB424 in vintage white. Probably next month. Just need to make a decision about 424x or 424. Probably 424. Anyhow, I love p basses. The feel and sound fits with me, my playing style and the music I like. I've owned a fender jazz as well but, although it was a lovely thing, it wasn't right for me.
25. I've got a v2 1x12 rumble cab. I only use it for monitoring as always go front of house, so one cab is enough for me. I really like it. If I needed a second cab I'd get a v3 rumble without hesitation. bargain cabs imo
