When I used to work for The Academy of Sound in Leicester quite a few years ago nearly everyone that worked there was a gigging muso including both the manager and assistant manager. As such we all covered for each other if someone had an epic journey for a gig or a really early get in and kept it fair for everyone. As most of my gigs were in Leicester I was always happy to cover for the other guys. It's different now working for a computer games company. We don't work Saturdays normally so that problems gone and if I'm gigging mid week as long as I do my core hours that day I can leave anytime after 4. that normally means getting in earlier and working through lunch. If I need to leave any earlier I take a half day holiday. However if we are in full production of a game my hours go into 'crunch' which normally means 12 hour days and very rarely any chance of taking a half day. When this happens I dep out mid week gigs and keep the weekend gigs. It's difficult juggling both sometimes. I'm surprised by Pete's situation working in a music shop, I would have thought they would be a bit more understanding.

Bought Gaf's lovely Fender Kingsman acoustic bass. Nice and easy deal and pleasure chatting with him. He looked familiar and turns out I went to school with him 15+ years ago ha!

Hey hey I've recently acquired this Peavey 5 string bass however it's not my kinda of thing so figured I'd stick it up on here. The bass is absolutely mint with no dings, chips, dinks or scrathes apart from there's a tiny bit or wear around the rear control plate (pictured) where I presume someone has used a flathead screwdriver to pop it open but only slight. I've also checked the electrics and they are fully working. Neck plays nicely but would probably benifit from a little setup. It's finished in a beautiful flame trans black with a maple neck and 24 fret rosewood board, dual passive humbuckers and brushed chrome hardware. Looks stunning. I don't know much more about these basses but it is really nice and worth a punt for someone looking to try a 5 string for the first time. Here's some pics, the camera really doesn't do the finish justice. I'm looking for £SOLD inc 24hr courier delivery or trade for a 6 string Here is a youtube video of someone talking about their 5 string Any questions drop me a PM Happy for collection or meet within a reasonable distance of Leicester Cheers guys

Like most people have suggested I just play a series of diads on the D&G string around the 12th

First gig last night with my Auralex Gramma Pad
Valhalalf replied to tonyf's topic in Accessories and Misc
I did three gigs back to back at three different venues the other weekend after buying the Great Gramma pad from Mark at Bass Direct. After a bit of tweaking the rig sounded better than it ever had and I didn't have to change any EQ settings for the next two gigs. For £60 it's probably one of the best bits of kit I've bought and will be coming with me to every gig. -
Well I picked up the cello last night, really nice condition with a hardcase and two bows. Pretty good for free. Having had a look at the strings that were on it I reckon using the bottom four strings from a set of D'Addario Jazz light flatwound guitar strings will probably work just fine. I had read somewhere this was a good option. http://store.daddario.com/category/145814/ECG25_Chromes_Light_12-52 And they're not that expensive if it doesn't work. I''d hate to spend £120 on a proper set of cello strings and it not work. Will keep you posted when I've fitted them.

Yeah been reading up all these guys. They had the luxury of having custom strings made for them which I think could quite expensive. *edit* just emailed LaBella strings in the states for advice on this as Ron Carter uses them so they may well have made him a custom set for his cello

I also read somewhere that you could use D'Addario Jazz light flatwounds as the bottom 4 strings would be very similar to the normal cello tension. I'm picking up the cello tonight so will have a look at the string thickness and see where to go from there. But if anyone has any more suggestions fire away, it'd be awesome if we could find a solution for everyone.

Hey hey I was just wondering if any bass chatter has tried and succeeded in tuning a Cello in bass standard tuning? Basically I've been given a cello from a guy at work for free and rather than playing in the standard cello tuning C-G-D-A I was hoping to tune it in bass standard so all my fingerings etc can cross over without trouble. Obviously it'll probably be in standard tuning an octave higher than bass but I'm hoping to use it to practice on and to see how I get on with it before I get myself a proper EUB. I've read multiple forum posts about doing this but can't find a solid answer that has worked. Some people have recommended using Rotosound Tru Bass 88s short scale flatwound bass strings. However I don't want to do something that ends up breaking or damaging the cello. The scale length of the cello is about 27.5" I believe. Can anyone offer some advice? Cheers

Which to visit? Bass Merchant or Bass Direct?
Valhalalf replied to charic's topic in General Discussion
Bass Direct for me. Went in to buy a strap and have a look around one day and got chatting with Mark. Mentioned I was thinking about buying a 5 string but wouldn't be for ages and he insisted I tried loads of different ones he had in stock. Even though I wasn't buying anything other than a strap that day Mark really made me feel welcomed and was great to chat with. +1 Bass Direct -
Well my EMGs arrived and are now fitted and I couldn't be happier. I gigged them Saturday night through my Ashdown ABM500 Head and they sounded amazing. Loads of punch and clarity with a modern sound, just what I wanted. The only downside was I couldn't fit the battery anywhere so had to fork out more money to have a luthier install a battery box in the back of the bass. It's a nice tidy job and will make it a lot easier to change the battery. Def happy with my decision.
