    We had a great gig tonight but were subjected to repeated requests from drunk males and females alike. I don't know why tonight was worse than usual. I just say "yes, we'll do it later" knowing that they'll forget they even asked. Frank.

    I own, apparently, nine basses, 😕 and gig eight. The one I don't gig much, is a Steinberger XT-2 that I bought to take away in my wee campervan. I do gig even that one occasionally though. Frank.

    I bought one of the very first ones produced, about 2008/9, if I remember correctly. Probably all the cab you'll ever need. Immensely capable. Frank.

    For several years it seemed every time I heard a live bass sound I loved, it was a P bass. I just had to have one. Now, there are very, very many great sounding bass guitars but often all you need is a P bass. Personally, I could easily play just a Fender Precision for the rest of my gigging life. I still like to gig other basses though, just for a change. Frank.

    I sold several basses after redundancy in April 2016. I regret parting with them. The collection is creeping up in number again. It's still modest by some standards in this thread!! So...2014? Fender American 70s Hotrod Jazz PJ in beautiful candy apple red. 2010 USA Jazz in olympic white and maple board. 2008 USA Precision, classic sunburst, tort, rosewood. 2014 USA Jaguar in olympic white. A gem. USA Musicman SUB. A cracking bass for not much money. MIK Warwick LX4 - almost...up there with German Warwicks I've owned. Steinberger Spirit XT2 for taking away in my wee campervan. Squier fretless jazz. (To replace a US fretless jazz I foolishly sold) Ibanez Talman TMB100M. Recently bought off Tom1946 and an excellent instrument. Others: Washburn D28S MIJ acoustic guitar, bought new 1978 and left to my son. A fairly modest collection, I think you'll agree. Frank.

    Mine is an Ibanez Talman TMB100M. It weighs exactly 8lbs and balances comfortably on a strap. The fitting and finish is of a very high standard. The frets are level with no sharp ends. I have a low action without buzzing or rattles. I think it could go a little lower but I'm happy where it is. I haven't needed to adjust the truss rod, having only lowered the bridge saddles by two turns. The hardware is doing its job as well as on any other bass I own although the tuners don't feel as refined as on more expensive basses - they work perfectly well though. The pickups are rich and powerful and the active preamp needs tiny adjustments to be very effective. This Talman range is fantastic value for the little money they cost. I recommend them wholeheartedly. Frank.

    I agree very strongly with your second point and totally disagree with your first and third points. Point 1. Most beginners are poor. A "good" cheap bass is therefore very important. Point 3. Many "budget" basses are excellent and could be used for a lifetime of gigging. Frank.

    I think that any genre of music can be played on any of the most popular basses. Could you not play jazz on a P bass? I know I could. And for young beginers, cost is usually important. I think this list would be very useful. Frank.

    Ibanez Talman range. Available for under £150.00 brand new. I've just bought a Talman TMB100M from Tom1946 and, after lowering the action a little to suit my playing style, it's a superb bass. I gigged it on Saturday night. It's up there with my US Fenders for sound and playability. The hardware, woods and assembly are good enough to gig this bass for life. I wish I'd owned a Talman when I was starting out on bass. Frank.

    I bought an Ibanez Talman bass from Tom. He was very patient while I dithered over buying. All communications were perfect and very friendly. The bass was delivered in about 24 hours, amazingly well packed and in perfect condition. Tom also posted the bass in a Fender gig bag which wasn't part of the original sale. Thanks Tom. As all Tom's feedback says already, Tom is a perfect gentleman to deal with and a credit to the basschat community. Frank.

    I think I might have posted this already somewhere, but doesn't replacing the ST with a Super Midget make a lot of sense? I have a BB2 and SM - three rigs are possible this way and no heavy lifting. Also much easier to store and lift into/out of cars. Frank.

    Just stretching the strings and letting them slap against the fretboard helps brighten them up. You need to be quite forceful though. Frank.

    When weight, size and volume matters at a gig, I use a Barefaced Super Midget and a Quilter BB800. I've tried guitar through this too and it sounds fine. This mini-rig will handle any pub gig I'm ever likely to play and any bigger gig with PA support. The Super Midget isn't cheap but you only buy once. The Quilter is cheap for what it does compared to other big name USA amps. Frank.

    I also have a Quilter BB800 and a pair of Barefaced one10s. I find that if I leave the EQs all centred the sound can be quite dark with this rig. When I do the same with my Barefaced SM or BB2 it's a bit brighter. I'm going to suggest that you try changing your EQ settings. Try turning the "contour" knob slightly anticlockwise, then turn the "depth" knob anticlockwise as well to remove some bass. Experiment with the various combinations to get a sound you like. You should get more top end. Hopefully, if this works for you, you'll save some cash by not buying new strings, which is good. Frank.
