I know this kind of thing occasionally happens on a local scale but... Krispn recently offered me the loan of the Wren & Cuff Pickle Pie B as he'd seen me espressing an interest in it but knew it wouldn't normally be possible for me to try it out without buying it from the States first... Not only that but he lives in Edinburgh and I live in Sheffield so he offered to post it to me, gave me a timeframe for the loan and the duly sent it! I made sure he'd got several phone numbers for me (work, home, mobile etc) and he did likewise. The pedal arrived as promised I tried it out, was really impressed by it and will probably buy one as soon as I find a US dealer who'll look after me... The short version is... This was really helpful for me to be able to AB my then current pedal (now sold) with my prospective pedal and enabled me to make a properly informed decision! Wouldn't this be a spectacular idea to encourage? Is it worthy of it's own sub-forum? 'Gear I'd like to try' or something? Is it possible to restrict posting in a sub-forum to 'no longer a newbie' or 'fully fledged members' as a regular user's privilege? Pedals are easily and cheaply posted so national loans shouldn't be a problem? Guitars and amps would work best locally so it would really help if everyone stated their location in their profile information... Whaddaya think?
Looks great but its a lot more than I was wanting to spend...£150 is about my limit.
You can get them s/h for about that...there have been a few on here for that and I've been umming and ahing about selling mine as I need the cash but it's really really useful for learning songs so am trying really hard to keep it!

Phil Jones Bass Buddy? Nice sounding preamp with DI, also has mp3 in so you can mix it into your headphones for learning new songs, I love mine!
It does become instinctive, but instinctive is not always a good thing. One of the biggest parts of instinct is drawing on the things you already know, i.e shapes or note theory that you've previously encountered. This can become a major hindrance when trying to push the boundaries of what we expect to hear, as you often fall into the trap of playing something predictable through instinct. Whilst this is good if you need to busk through a ii-v-i or a i-iv-v, as you have plenty of prior knowledge/experience to draw on for an 'instinctive' bass line, it often leads down the path of playing stylistically stereotypical bass lines. In order to step outside of this, IMO, you need a solid understanding of all elements of music theory, so you can carefully consider/plan how you will use those tools to actively go against the grain.
Yep, that's more like it!
yeah that makes sense. But OTOH its good to have a few different angles to look at one thing from. I suppose the tones and semitones method is easier if your starting from the same note each time. in any case as long your learning it doesn't make a difference what route you take. kind of on the same subject, I've spent the last 4 years at university studying music, and though I think learning theory (note theory, Victor Wooten calls it) is very important for knowing the fretboard and getting shapes into your muscle memory, I'm finding as i play more and mature as a musician I don't really think about notes anymore, I just think sounds. Or sometimes I don't think at all, I just do it. Anyone else found this?
You learn the tools (note theory) and then over time those tools seep into your playing and become instinctive...?
I played an Aspiration Elite when I got my contemporary J and the E string was fairly flabby so I asked for a tuner and tuned it up, thinking it had been detuned too much (it was out of tune too). I think I got it to a C before realising I was going an octave too high so I tuned it back down to E and it was really flabby and awful to play. Then I picked up the J and everything was perfect on it. I did prefer the look of the Elites so it's a shame I got a duff one. But as Machines said, this may not be the fault of Overwater/Tanglewood, it could have been badly set up once the store got it or someone could have messed it up whilst having a play.
My elite 4 is spot on, string tension and sound are brilliant! I've realised I can't do four strings though...
PPB is great! Not got bags of control but what it does it does well. I think the musket fuzz has been recommendedas a versatile big muff alike but not got a clean blend. I may have some recently recorded bass and PPB audio coming back my way after a recent recording folly. If you're up near Edinburgh you're welcome to pop in for a cuppa and try it out. I got mine direct from USA within 3 wks or so. G
Matey, the offer is generous, alas I live in Sheffield so won't be able to test your brewmaking, I would like to hear your recording forays though? I suppose the ideal I'm after is a bass fuzz pedal that has a wet/dry control along with 3 band eq and which can do a really fat big muff sound among others..?
Bass BB preamp. got one today. perfect. It can subtle, creamy overdrice up to full on fuzz. or, for something a bit trebly-er try the Aguilar Agro, very bright, very fuzzy. Only has one real tone tho. Both have a small footprint
Hhmmm, the bb is v good but is rather similar to my ebs multidrive, I want something more 'muffy', basically my bass big muff but with more control over eq and wet/dry mix... So far the pickle pie b is looking v good!
