Does anyone on here use a Variax bass as their main axe ?
far0n replied to far0n's topic in General Discussion
Well the thumb rest was deemed necessary due to the lack of pick-ups to rest against! Just done a googlesearch and there are still some around, new in Dealers, wanting silly money too! I too contemplated dropping the electronics into a Jazz Bass body but then thought, why do this if I don't use all the pre-sets anyway? I was a member of the Line6 forum for some time and at one time L6 were promising a revised model, but then they went and quietly scrapped it, I guess it did not sell the way the guitar ones did?
When I mentioned the thumb rest, I meant the way it curves inwards then back out again.... not the reason it's there in the first place. -

That's the thing that struck me about them, electronically superb but I thought they were ugly....that ridiculous thumb rest that curves in/out baffles me. It should really have looked like a Yamaha RBX A2..... funky, modern looking with cool sound switching. Totally missed opportunity I reckon. -

Just curious really. -
I'd certainly read a few rave reviews about the Nordstrand MM4.2 I think it is. Just curious but why the J-East preamp ?? Also read one or two things about getting the new pickup wired in series instead. Anyone care to comment ? ta muchly. Here's the beast, granted with a non standard scratchplate. But the originaly scratchplates were ridiculous anyway.
-
Right then, as expected.... 'cos I've had one before.... the G-String is weak as piss, so what should I do to rectify this ? Is it purely a pickup problem or preamp problem. Was thinking about maybe adding a Delano Pickup with a nice Agular preamp. All opinions welcome !

Fellow Passion owner here !! Here's mine....

As a resident of Kilburn (home of the mouseman, Robert Thomson) I frequently pass the massive piles of oak sitting outisde, seasoning ready to be made into furniture. Then I started thinking, you never really see guitars made from oak !! Is it too heavy ? Rubbish tone wood ? Difficult to work with ? As usual, all opinions and thoughts welcome

Seriously why would anyone spend that amount of cash on one of these, when you could get a custom jobby built ???? Bizarre !
im taking it they all have the same strings on?
Yeah, I'm using Warwick Red Label 100-40's. Strangely the cheaper the bass the better the string balance is... in my case anyway
-
I have half a dozen basses, some have really good consistent string volume across all four strings. Others are pretty rubbish. So I was wondering what causes it ?? I once had a Stingray which was by far the worst of any bass I've ever had. I've tried screwing the pickups down at the 'business end' and heightening them at the top end, this only really makes a fairly small difference. Is it the preamp voicing that can cause things like this ?? Or is it just the build ? If so, what is it about the build that causes it ? All moans/gripes and advice welcome !
You're halfway there! You need to figure in that the nominal cone size (i.e. 10", 12" or 15") isn't the diameter of the radiating area (which is about 1.5" smaller) - consequently the smaller the woofer, the less accurate your cone area calculation is. The second issue is that to move air you need a third dimension, the distance the speaker can move back and forth. More here: http://barefacedbass.com/technical-informa...isplacement.htm (please ignore the sales spiel, you can buy what you want, just read the facts as they apply to every moving cone loudspeaker!)
So a 15" cone isn't ? Blimey.. in all the years I've been playing.. I didn't know that ! I blame the EU !!!!
-
Me being a complete úber geek I thought I'd calculate the total cone areas of each cab.... 2x10" - 157 square inches 2x12" - 226 1x15" - 177 Looks like the 2x12 will shift some air !!!
How about another Eden 210?
I've got one ! Well I've I've got two in fact. I tend to use them both for larger gigs stacked on top of each other but when it comes to some tiny little pub I just need a single cab that'll give my a bit more than a single 2x10. Hate 15s so I was thinking 2x12.
-
Fancy getting one eventually (in the summer), any opinions ? Never owned a 12s cab but I was looking for something with just a bit more 'kaboom' than my David Eden 210. Like the look of those Genz Benz Neo 212 cabs

Single most important thing you've been taught?
far0n replied to theosd's topic in General Discussion
Playing cleanly was probably the best thing I learnt, no open strings wobbling around in the background. The sign of a piss poor player if they are -
Does it have a phenolic fingerboard? I have an acquainance with a Cort Curbow fretless that is incredibly sensitive to humidity changes. He puts it down to the synthetic board (and he is a luthier!)
Used to have one myself, the neck used to go all over the place. I just put it down to if having something like a one piece neck.
-
If the strings are now flat with the neck you can be pretty damn certain that you haven't got a broken truss rod - so that's good news I'd be inclined to get it back indoors, let it settle down for a day and then slacken the truss rod. Probably a daft question, but the strings haven't somehow fallen off of the little roller type guides on the bridge have they?
Nah, everything's still in place. I've restrung it just incase, needed doing anyway.

Where can I get a Gotoh 2 x 9v battery box ?
far0n replied to far0n's topic in Repairs and Technical
Cheers gents, that's exactly the one ! Ta muchly -

I had a gig after a 12 hour shift the other night, so rather than pack my car with gear at 5:30am I did it the night before and left the gear in the car overnight. Went to the gig and the action on my Cort Funkmachine was flat against the neck. Now bearing in mind I've never altered the truss rod on that bass in about 5 years 'cos it's rock steady... so I'm kinda panicking a bit here. I'm assuming the cold has maybe warped the neck? I've had a look at it, it doesn't seem twisted at all, it's just weird that it's pulled all the strings so far back. Once it had warmed up it didn't move back again, so it's like a permanent neck movement. Obviously if the truss rod had snapped it would have bowed forward instead of backwards, so I'm a tad confused. All help and advice greatly appreciated ! Faron

I saw one in Howard's Bass Place in Newcastle once up on a hook on the wall. I couldn't lift it off. :/

I've downloaded stuff illegally as have most people, but what the record companies seem to be missing is that if people can get it for nothing they will. Whether they had the intention to buy it in the first place is another matter. I've downloaded albums illegally just to have a listen... I previously had no intention to buy it, so that in my book is not classed as lost revenue. Anyway, I've recently bought the latest Jamiroquai CD without listening to it first... it's great in my opinion and well worth the £9.99 I paid for it. Don't understand why people buy mp3s though? Surely if your ipod or PC crashed and you lost the lot... at least you've got your CDs to fall back on right ??
last night when i got back i had an urge to play this line, so i did a crash course recording of it. Amazing bass line. a wee bit rushed here and there but i think its pretty ok. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ccd3m4zz-Mk
Very nice... although you do know the verses are played an octave higher yeah ?
