I'm thinking of making a fretless , I was wondering what the most popular pick up regimes were.
its an open market..i had emg active but really i dont think you need be swayed that way normall passive jazz pups i feel are the most 'famous' after the likes of jaco

Wanting a propper bass... but what is there?
mrcrow replied to karlthebassist's topic in Bass Guitars
So I've been playing for 5 or 6 years and have had a number of basses in that time - maybe 20, but nothing special. The nicest ones I have ever owned have been my current MIM P-bass which I have installed active basslines P/J pups in and a badass II bridge, a black MIM Jazz with bartolini pups, and an Ibanez SRX-500 whihc I had for a very short time. So now I've got a bunch of stuff up for sale including two basses and a load of effects so I can fund my first propper 4 string bass. I think my budget would be in the region of £700, and for that reason I would be looking at second hand to maximise what I can get. Ever since playing bass I have dreamed about owning a Stingray. 4 string, Black/Black plate with Maple board, but have never REALLY played one propperly to find out what sort of tones I can get from it. Another dream bass would be a MIA P Bass, black/black plate with Maple (see the theme here?) But are any of these basses virsatile enough? I am really into a lot of different styles of music and would play in a band that does pretty much anything. My main band atm is a covers band that does stuff like beatles, stones, rem, the jam, clash, kinks, ocean colour scene and my current main bass (the aformentioned MIM p bass modded) does the lot. I play fingerstyle mostly, or pickstyle when needed. At home i play a lot of melodic lines, chords etc, also some slap and the p-bass does fine - but i wouldnt say no to some more frets.... Somthing like an ibanez SR1000EFM prestige REALLY grabs my attention as they look stunning, and i like ibanez necks, but ive never played one... A MIA P-bass Delux would possibly be ok, with the extra pup, but i really dont know what other options i have, and where I can play the basses?!?? Please any suggestions would be greatly apreciated. I just want a quality instrument that I can use every day without fuss. Cheers chaps.
musicman no fuss...one vol 3 band eq...cool sound and well made...would have to be second hand though.. -
Just curious but what type of board do you prefer; lined, marked (with harmonic positions where the fret would be), or good old plain unmarked? And why, of course!
my only fretless was ebony board with side dots at the 'frets' i got it fretted and the luthier put on a zero fret so that the dots were then not in line with the frets if i got another..and i really do fancy one again..i would go for fretlines...dots arent reliable as they dont cater for parallax looking up the neck
there was no pain or anything Wayne, it just locked against the palm and I had to actually lift it from the palm with my other hand. it lasted for a couple of tunes and then it was ok for the final song again. Very weird indeed
still worth a second opinion...the doc my guess is a form of cramp or rsi RSI
like i said, where is bass.or where can it go.....would you rather hear melodic bass lines that compliment the song, or would you rather hear super techniques that blow you away...somewhere in between for me... ive often thought that the bass is a slave to the music really, even if its play with some flamboyance , as long as it stays within it boundries...thats where it is most effective right?? lets face it, most of the public who listen to music dont even know the bass is there(which is a shame) but what will it take, to take bass to the level that other instruments are...im thinking this may never happen because of the nature of the instrument... sometimes i love the fact that its only us that realise the importance of electric bass, but i wish sometimes that other (non musician) people would think about what there listening to sometimes...as well as other instruments of course!! i very rarely come across anyone who says "oh i love that bass line" or "man i dig that guitar or trumpet part" ive often said that i play bass for the bigger picture which i stand by, but does our bass playing fall on deaf ears? are we slaves to the listeners as well as the music! oh i do think too much..
bass has its plass.. i played other instruments and when the bass was absent...it was felt..drums arent really enough i dont really listen to it as a solo instrument but a fundamental underpinning to many tune/threads of other players contributions because i play bass i can hear every note and nuance...which i think does go beyond the overall listener...but even so i dont reckon bass as singularly important i played saxes and clarinet for years...but now i dont play them i tend to pick out bass more easily in a recording
It's the bass as described here. It says 199 quid there, but I'm willing to take offers with a starting price of £120. It's in almost mint condition apart from some very tiny dents at the tip of the headstock (I don't know if this is common for you all, but I always manage to chip or dent the tip of the headstock). I play it at home through a 100w Laney Linebacker, and sometimes a Marshall B25 MKII and it sounds beautiful through both amps. It has 3 knobs; a balance, master tone and volume, and they are all very effective and enable you to get a wide variety of sounds. The reason I am selling this is simple; I need funds for a Geddy Lee signature! Pictures will be up soon, and more info if anyone wants it. As for postage, it will be £10 standard mail, or if you want a specific courier, I will find out the price. It isn't much, but here's my ebay profile as I'm a first time seller on here. *edit* I should also note it has been gigged with once and is very dependable.
WELCOME!! &cm=1&dest=UK&col=UK"]parcel2go.com...i use them a lot now their standard 24-48 hour delivery via dhl is 8.99 plus vat...a tenner...and if you put in your bass in a box or case sizes you will see they still come out....8.99+vat damn good value... insurance is extra and is only covered for £50...take a chance? be watching your bass...cheers **PICS**

thats why i bought a 5'er to get a decent fretted E...and the D i think its because its not fretted even with the zero fret idea its still dull. probably to do with scale length and gauge
Hi John I've shipped loads of basses over the years all around the world. I think it's actually pretty simple once you get going. As you have the original case, just get a couple of big boxes from your local guitar store (ideally bass, but guitar work okay if you put them end on end) and double skin it in them with lots of packing tape. Then just comapre a few costs from the various couriers (UPS, FedEx, DPD etc.) and make sure you ship it for the appropriate value, and ideally use a trackable service. Cheers Gareth
check!! try these folks..i used them and they are good

i have had two distinct ordering situations where the money is taken...from a visa card credit account and then the folks email me and say out of stock...do i want a refund or...what? rearrange these letters into a well known word sye
Active tronics are powered (9v or 18v batteries) and can boost frequencies. Passive can only cut frequencies. Naturally there are many more ramifications, but that's the basic answer. Many will argue a floor pedal can do the same, and of course your amp's preamp stage too. I find active very useful, but then I use a lot of dub tones in a couple of my bands.
thats about it...onboard eq along with mid sweep..parametric makes going to the store easier..
Hi yes indeed, but he has only listed a few types of pick up. I just need some basic info on what they are like or whether, because of the 'bespokeness' of such a hand made bass, would it better to spend some extra cash for something better/ different? Im sure Jon is extremley knowledgable is this area, but i do like to research projects before i commit cash to them cheers Matt
i would let someone who is a real luthier (jon) make it...then you can enjoy the crafstmanship its a little beano to do one but i dont think you would be happy with the results or resale value
Hi - been browsing to see what bass parts are knocking around for sale & I was wondering if it might help to find stuff if parts were in a separate section of the marketplace rather than alongside guitars/keyboards etc. in the 'Other musically related stuff' section. Just wondered what everyone else thought? B.
i put a speaker on the musically related etc but for bass parts to do a build i think separate would be ok
does anyone here do this? to me it sounds better- dont know if its just the huge increase in db but it sounds clearer to me. not sure on the damages either to the amp by doing this?
there seems to be only a few basses which need to go into my active input...really hot i always use the passive input and then cut the gain on the preamp i also did this with EMG actives and onboard active pre amp...like the stingray
They are a little tilted.
on a jazz there isnt much scope for tilting as you can on a P imho best leave the pups level..to begin with...see setting pup heights below that is why some pups have longer poles in the centre 2 on a 4 string set your pup heights to regulation and take it from there from the underside of the string to the top of the E side...1/8 G side ...a small amount closer with the strings fretted at the last fret this will give a slight tilt depending on your action hope this helps also take off the E string and give it a bit of a coil up and uncoil a few times... replace exactly as you had it...dont let it be twisted when tensioning
You have to find a way of getting the bridge or something metal in contact with it connected to your common earth. Might be able to do the Fender style earth strip from bridge of bridge pickup hole, think of a cunning way to make it look right. Depending on colour, a straight narrow strip of copper foil will do it, if you have one of those stripey through necks, it could blend really well. Or if its black colour it black, it will be in the dusty under pickups and strings bit anyway.
this is what i did on a through neck i hammered a piece of copper wire till it was really thin and stuck it to the body with a slight film of glue being so thin it didnt affect the bridge height or was too obvious on the surface of the bass and went under the splt i pinned it to the bridge pup cavity floor and soldered to the pin with the earth from the pup and then to the pot so as not to have two cables or any slack there it worked fine

are the pups tilted...a bit down on the E side regarding trying another string...good idea..sometimes its the simplest solution which is the right one...
