3.
As the subject says really. The frets on my Gibson G-3 are pretty worn - too worn to dress imo. If I was to get it refretted (by someone who knows what they're doing), would it be detrimental to the value of the instrument in the same way as for instance refinishing?
what do you think the guys did in the days when your bass was new wait 20 years to get the frets done its an instrument not a museum if you cant bear to have it refretted...get another bass and store that one away
 4. the truss rod doesnt know if its a fender or not a key is a key...
 5. my recommedation is that you slacken off the strings for every stage of the set up set the truss rod for bow set the saddles for action set the intonation check the pup heights ...dont slacken off for this i think you need someone to take you through the stages to eliminate any techno fear and show how easy it is patience is required and a tuner..
 6. the final sound is complex notice how your sound varies with differing venues to A/B is a better idea
 7.
ah thats so cool the way they did that. Setting up a camera to take 30 frames every second, but to only expose each frame for a 1000th of a second. pretty neat!
thanks for that reply... i must try this on my bass if i can rig up my camera or camcorder to do that cool
 8. any urb sound....i really should have got one of these...and i may do except for the size
 9. i played reeds...clarinet and saxes with a worship band i changed church...they needed a bass rather than reeds being more a guitary sort of group so i got a rick and here i am with this shuker 51 slide show
 10.
Ok so im shooting a video with loungefly this weekend for our song 'lap it up', and of course rather than 'what shall I wear' or 'aaarrgh my skins really bad at the moment!' My first thought is 'What bass am I gonna use?!?' Now my sonic blue jazz is the bass most people have associated with me over the years so i feel like thats the one i should use, but its the colour, I LOVE it but im worried as the song is a bit punky I could come of all, 'I wanna be Mark Hoppus'. ( I have taken the animal sticker off though) So then i thought my black n gold Geddy, it looks nice, its kinda shiny, but black is a bit dull. So the white jazz?, or Aria for some retro coolness, or the tatty 'relic' P bass replica, which i think might look cool, but is it too 'done'? and then its covers on/covers off time? You see my dilemma, so im putting the word out lol, which do you guys (and gals) reckon?
droooolllllllllllllllllllllllll the white one...now i can relax
 11. if you have passive pups...then you are passive the signal then proceeds either to an on board preamp or one on the head/combo you are still generating passive signals with the active pups...even they have a preamp built in and generate tiny signals to this i would say if the bass has a preamp and eq on board it can be classified active only because it needs a battery ? edit..i forgot to take into consideration the change in signal type..active iirc goes better on long cable lengths
 12. have another..
 13. sunday night bump
 14.
I think he meant Harmonic vs open string?
sorry i said free octave i meant the second harmonic... the one over the 12th fret..sort of thanks
 15.
Had a look last night and can't really see down the back of the hole well enough to see what needs sorting. Can anyone shed any light on this please? Cheers, Jon
late question is the housing meant to be a tight fit in the body? if its coming out then i suspect you may need to make it 'stay' in the hole drilled for it would some epoxy hold it sounds like a desoldering job as well
 16. sort of getting on for rock and roll if you watched the films of the 50's i was 13 when frankie took off with this i was at grade school in new jersey usa
 17.
I'm usually just paying attention to what chords are going by and not really paying attention to scales too much. I'd played for a long time before I learnt much about music so I mostly rely on knowing what the intervals sound like. Way too often I don't even know what note I'm playing, only how it relates to the chord or the next chord. I'm not proud of it though.
that sounds like good solid grounding get to know chord progressions and shapes...then songs seem to fall into certain types you already know the chords for i think we all start like that and then become wannabee's

 21.
I've always used the harmonic vs 12th fret - how come it gives a false reading?
who doesnt...that is what we are intonating the free octave against the set octave the false reading is coming from ????
 22.
Hey all, I'm going to be installing (trying to install) a MM pickup into my P a long side the split P pup. My question is what rating of pots and cap to i need, i'm going vvt. PS if anybody can do me a wiring diagram i would be hugely grateful
standard jazz wiring diagram treating the mm as either wired parallel..advised..or series..yuk! 250K all pots 0.047 cap nothing magic about your combination electronically etc your P is around 13K and the mm will rate at 3.8K parallel but give crisp highs and 15 or so k series actually if the mm is in the bridge position start with series...then the two might be more balanced what a combo that will be
 23.
If you bought your solder recently from Maplin it'll be lead free crap which is useless with my 30W iron (also from Maplin). I found some 60/40 Lead/Tin with flux core in Clas Ohlsen in Croydon (like a Swedish version of Woolies, but with stuff you actually want) and it was an absolute doddle to solder to the back of the pot.
glue? 24.
i managed to find one in my shed! so nothing else works then? ill keep that in mind, cheers.
like all situations the best tool for the job is the one that fits i have used a small cross head screwdriver...watchmakers type...from woolies when i couldnt find an allen key to fit but always took the tension off the strings to do these jobs means you are doing less work with the tools and the threads dont get too much friction on them i slacken off strings to do everything...even intonation
