Replacement necks whats best value/quality
mrcrow replied to bumnote's topic in Repairs and Technical
I've bought some nice japanese-made necks (& bodies) from Brandoni in Wembley. I would definitely see if they had what I wanted next time I need a neck. The quality of the these is very good. They were about £100 each & are very similar to Fender MIJ parts.
cool nom de forum -
the only advice i can offer is that when soldering the connection is purely for electrical continuity and not a mechanical joint so use small quantities of solder and just barely touch the connection take the iron immediately away or you will dump more solder in the joint best of luck
I can remember reading that ideally the nut should be made of a softer material than the truss-rod so if the thread strips it will be on the most easily replaced part. Of course whether this applies in practice on a mass-produced instrument is another matter.
the most easiest to replace component...from an access point of view should be the softest in general terms if the nut is easy to get out...then ok i often wondered how they got the truss rod etc in there anyway....i thought the fretboard would need to come off
I've always been a fan of the grolsch bottle seals for my basses but I recently got a stingray and the strap just doesn't like being squeezed into the hard case along with the bass. Has anyone used "proper" straplocks? Are they any good and easy to fit? At least with the grolsch tops I know where I stand - They never come off and I know the only time the bass will fall is if the strap itself breaks. Problem is they are a nightmare to take off so taking the strap off every time I put the bass in it's case is going to be too much of a hassle. My strap is a beastly leather number that is perfect for a heavy bass like the stingray but that makes it pretty difficult to fit into the case when attached to the bass. Anyone got any thoughts?
best accessory ever...all my basses had them...use the same strap for all and i always take the strap off anyway...gig bag..
I stick my strings in a stone polishing tumbler, with some meths in, then tumble them for about 20 mins. I've not been doing it for long so I'm not sure how succesful it'll be long term but it's certainly better than boiling them!
that sounds pretty good do you do jewellery
I was having a discussion with a fellow band member the other day about feel, and whether it comes natural or can be taught. I reckon it's something you develop mainly by what you listen to and consequently play a great deal. How could you teach it? Any thoughts?...
the person who would teach it to you wasnt taught....?? it comes with maturity

Differing outputs/tone between basses you use
mrcrow replied to Tinman's topic in General Discussion
the begging question is then..why do people buy them if the difference is not that usable in a giggibg context...?? just asking...
i thought this as well...when i got my P bass after a manson J...i wanted it to sound like a P not a J then i got the stingray 5...and was over the moon that it didnt sound like either the above now i have the shuker passive 51P...its sounds just right i concentrate on the right notes and rhythm....get the vol right and away i go -

Help! Bolt holes in the wooden heel of a Fender P neck
mrcrow replied to Clarky's topic in Repairs and Technical
I went down to B&Q & got some 3/8" or 1/4" dowel (not sure which), bored out the screw holes (don't go too deep!!!) and pushed in the dowel after dipping the ends in an excellent wood glue. Let it go off for 48 hours then you can re-drill a pilot hole for the screws. Worked fine for me. Geoff
this is the way to go another more engineered way is to fit threaded inserts and replace the wood screws with machine screws you can then take the neck off many times threaded inserts for wood i would get the body routed and the scratchplate to give access to the truss adjuster as a real modification...then you no longer have to remove the neck -

that diagram is not the way i would connect the circuit the tone cut on that comes before the vol pot which bleeds cut too early...tone cut should come on the outgoing signal from the vol pot else you start to set up an electronic circuit which works with cap and vol simultaneously...what that is i dont know but it doesnt give hearty signals when the vol is turned this is what i mean below are mods to the diagram shown on the fender link...no disrespect to leo's heirs swap the pup lead from pin 1 to pin 2 on the vol pot disconnect the lead to the jack from pin 2 on the vol pot and connect to pin 2 on the tone pot disconnect the lead on pin 3 on the tone pot and reconnect to pin 2 on the tone pot reconnect the cap from pin 2 to pin 3 on the tone pot all the earths should remain that is the wiring for a P bass...the year doesnt matter bassically.. ...hot leads go to pins 2 on pots on vol and tone and the transfer out signal from pin 1 on vol pots
Hiya all, First post and immediately seeking advice! Have recently joined two bands - one that uses standard tuning and another that requires down tuning to a low B (to perform old school, big riffage metal). Currently only got the one bass (EB MM 'Ray) which can cope with the low tuning after a lengthy setup quite handsomely but really rather have this bass tuned in standard to perform all the funky in-ya-face type stuff for the other band. Obviously using the same bass for both bands is a nightmare due to having to change the setup and have never got on with any 5-string (awkward, I know). So looking to go to a BEAD tuning and buy another bass to fill this requirement - any suggestions? Any advice in general?? Was kinda thinking about a Fender P - or am I completely off the mark with that idea??
how does a B sound on your present equipment...i couldnt get it to sound well on my boy racer combo
-
my take is that you have your eq under your fingertips you also have it...in my case on the bddi on the combo as well the adjustments on the bass i think are finer and more controllable..when i had an active bass...SR5...i was able to eq as the conditions changed acoustics can vary and also our thinking on the 'right' sound for a song on a passive bass ones feelings are that all you can do is tackle one end of the spectrum and not successfully so that you need to keep adjusting at your next point of reference which can be distracting mid song
My band booked a gig in Birmingham that was then moved a week by the promoter without checking with us - I cannot do the new date (next Saturday). Rather than cancelling the other guys have arranged for a dep bass player and sent him our CD. Not sure what to think about this. While I want our band's reputation to flourish, two things strike me: 1. I am a bit p*ssed that they are going ahead with this as I consider myself an integral part of the band (we are only a trio and I could never imagine the singer/guitarist agreeing for the band to gig without HIM); 2. they may realise, if the stand-in is any good, that I am not really a particularly good bass player! How would you feel?
no one can replace you even if they play exactly right we are each a person be positive about it so that the vibes are good and the gig goes well...its the band name that gets the kudos

good luck with tackling something that does overcome us all a step back...and then two steps forward for bass kind we are only where our feet are

TI strings only let me down once...and it was metal failure on the windings TI replaced them directly and since then ++1 i consider them quite robust and able to take quite a lot of extra tension in doing bendy ruperts i havent used them for slap and pull
