Hi Guys, I have a Spector with EMG 40DC pickups and want to change to a more traditional sound. Has anyone changed or heard the 40J (single coil) or 40 CS (steel) or the 40P5 (split coil). Thanks. Marc
hi again voxpop i did once use a 30HB which is the same shape as the 40DC...and being a 'P' disguised in a soapbar casing may do the trick if you need to keep the same rout...that would be a 40P EMG QUOTE "The 40P design has two offset coils that result in more low end with brilliant highs. It is intended for 6-string models that have a more narrow string spacing and uses short, squat coils that have very little resistance and plenty of inductance. Ceramic magnets are used to add clarity. The 40P has a natural presence, powerful lows, punchy midrange, and superior definition. This pickup uses a 40 Extended housing that is 4 inches (102mm)." regarding J pups...how would you fit them etc after taking off the big DC shape cheers geof

hi wayne...found those early shots buried deeeeeeeeeeeeeep in my archive hard drive...harchivedrive 1 here is the badass you have on my special P/J 2 you can see the grooves i used for the strings in the close up and the way that laid across the poles in the other shot cheers geof
I've just installed a Badass II on my MIM Jazz and I must say I'm as pleased as punch with it (except the action is all over the place due to me forgetting to bring my allen keys home) but I get a strange rattle when I play the D sting aggresivly. It happens when I fret so it must be something at the bridge end, any ideas? While we are there does the string spacing look OK as I had 2 grooves on each saddle to choose from and I think I got it right.
hi wayne... click that G string out a bit the grooves i cut for the jazz were the two outermost ones to get the best fit as for the actionl...the only other thing besides an allen key to get those saddles up may be the end of a pair of small scissors and a tip...slacken off the strings so you arent fighting tension while you are doing it hope that helps cheers geof

yes fret 12 distance from the nut times 2 roughly when the bass is correctly intonated it will be from the nut to the lightest string...G on a 4 string...saddle
Fill and redrill
that sounds easiest ...what filler should be used in the neck to guarantee a good grip if the new holes are marginally different? is dowelling a better option
Some passive Peaveys have a volume and tone knob for each pickup- not quite setting EQ but a similar idea?
so do rickenbacker... i think this is preferable since on a passive bass gives better control to the overall volume with each pup wired discreetly and not using the same cap the standard fender jazz wiring defeats its own volume when using one pup just off vol and one on full with any increase in tone setting.. this will result in a drop in volume so i have found in the past and use a pan pot for the pups...or dispense with the tone cut completely adding bass to a neck pup is not always as necessary as adding to the bridge independent shaping seems a better idea for me one pup is enough
Of course. With practice you can get as much dynamic range with a pick as you can with your fingers.
good this is something i wondered...not all use dynamics as opposed to volume settings and the word c - r - e - s - c - e - n - d - o on a score needs good control cheers geof

setting up the bass is relatively easy so long as your truss rod is accessible a guitar/music instrument shop usually has a bass player...the old guy sorting out the music...perhaps not a lot of tools are required just some time and patience to do it right..truss adjust tool/small screwdriver/allen key for saddles/tuner/ruler or gauge set at pup setting distance step one...truss rod settings ***with strings loosened off step two the action..bridge etc step three retune step four set intonation..need a tuner for this and may have to loosen strings if saddles are tight step four check pup settings relative to underside of strings if you have doubts about the frets or nut etc...then i agree it may be better to find a repaired...doesnt have to be bass good luck with that http://www.arenaguitartechs.co.uk/ googled link to setups in crewe
Although this comes up all the time, I'll reply and say that a bassist should use all techniques depending on what is called for in each particular song.
i agree...i only play fingerstyle and cant slap i have tried pick and slap but since i dont need them i dont make any effort to get good at them fingerstyle will allow dyanmics to be played...can you do that with a pick? another point is right from the beginning basses had pickguards...even though the finger rest was for thumb plucking

wire the pups direct to the jack one at a time then you can gauge clean output if you are happy with them passive...which must be the case as i dont see a pup maker downwinding pups for active applications when the active part really is eq.. then you may have to change pots if the ones on the bass are 25K for active uses to remove the pots and preamp is a good idea since you leave all the connections in place making a note of where the pups connected you may want to change the jack so you dont have a batt operated one.. simple is best
