i havent played status and remember when they were upper class basses musicman havent really gone down market to speak of and sound pretty consistent for the money...and its a lot mm is the way to go
-
leo fender first bass..precision next..jazz next...mm next g+l for me there is a sort of progression there... having owned a jazz an precision special..P.J...i would say with all dimensional traits aside the jazz wins out for versatility and breadth of tonality and i suspect leo thought a bit of pickup combining gave us the MM and the subsequent g+l variation

if you go for a white splt i think you ought to consider a white pup casing
don't quote me, but i would image if they are blade magnets as you said, there will be no problem
yes i used an EMG 45DC in my 4 string...the blade magnets were full width so it worked ok only when the blades are staggered as in the 30/35HB..precision style in a rectangular shape...would a 45 or 50 perhaps not pickup the signal the blades being finite lengths to suit string spacing..
I think this must be me. I've been playing for about a year now, teaching myself and trying do it properly with scales and a warm up routine. How is it that recently I seem to be getting worse? Is this normal?
the learning curve isnt always upwards..fatigue and some residual lack of inertia can come about before long if you stick it out you will find a big jump up it took me 3 years to really get proficient at clarinet...and possibly the same with bass you are doing ok the way you are doing it if possible learn bass clef notation as well and the secret in teaching and learning is to have some fun...so have a 'play time' where you just noodle...it eases the mind a bit cheers
<snip>..............As you'll know, if you do replace them with non Yam pups, they leave whopping big gaps round them...but it's worth it. Have you just got this...how much did you pay for it (if you don't mind me asking)? G
why yamaha did this i can never understand...the funny pup shapes
-
if it gives the ray sound..then the sub with the jazz you are forever fiddling with knobs to try to get the same sound imagine two jazz pups brought together at the sweet spot....the mm pup

my first point of reference would be to go headless and then consider a short scale both would be my ideal for space saving and portability
word with the pot all the way down all the signal should be bleeding to the ground
if the wiper arm cant discharge the signal to ground via the track i thought this could be the cause of the pot not giving the required earth the wiper arm could be misaligned i am just shooting in the wind here...
Personally, I don't trust people on eBay who can't spell or use reasonably correct grammar (that's the best I can hope for these days!). Most of your interaction in life involves someone's perception of you, so a wise man uses every available angle to influence that moment. I have that guy's card marked as 'low IQ'.
how about the guys who are selling a bass...only used for recording... view sellers other items a range of corner shop junk and no more bass gear

i really dont like the fender 4 a side headstock and favour the 2 a side design..thats on a 4 string also i really find rickenbacker engineering and design on the old versions...including the fake horseshoe magnet pup design and the poorly designed bridge which looks like a blacksmith has some input on it its all so unwieldy and unglamorous... the classic fender bent piece of metal...BPOM... bridge was ok with through stringing without ts it is truly useless yamahas habit of routing their basses for pups which are similar to standart p and jazz but having little extras doesnt seem user friendly either and finally those un necessary bits of tin on retro fenders over the pups apologies to all the afficionados who know better.. cheers
-
i had a rickenbacker 3001...a 1994 model..no bindings anyway i farted around with the truss rods and managed to get them to turn right along the length of the neck when i adjusted up for bow the fretboard got pushed off the neck...i didnt realise what i had done and drilled holes in the board and fitted screws to hold it down again a real dogs breakfast and a waste of a good bass sold it for a junk price
after watching this video... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x6Cd98DH__U
i have owned a 'real' fender from usa...the build was not as i would have expected round the neck to body joint it sounded ok though and was made of tough materials..1998 model i havent looked closely at a squier but would expect it to be on a par with a usa fender most owners of any fender iirc are all about changing pups/ splts/ bridge/ tuners/ and god knows what else so what is the real draw with fenders they are easy to upgrade??
I've no idea about the Yamaha you refer to but having had a 32" Aria TSB-550 for many years (now gone to another grateful owner) I'd say that a 32" scale is fine if it suits you. It will mean that, if you use the same gauge of strings, you will have less tension in them to get to pitch so you might want a slightly heavier gauge string to allow for that. Medium scale strings are less available than long scale and it can limit what strings you can choose from. The slightly shorter fret spacing makes 32" fast to play. However, I'd say the other characteristics of the bass will be more important in terms of sound. For example, my Aria sounded like a early 80s Aria - general construction e.g. neck through, same pickups etc - rather than sounding specifically like a 32" scale bass. Some Japanese Fender Jazzes are, I believe, available in 32" scale because the slightly shorter scale was popular with the Japanese of smaller stature (or so I've heard; sounds a bit dubious really) and if that's true it might explain why there's a Yamaha in 32" too. My Aria too was a 32" bass in an Aria range of mostly 34" basses. You might want to consider that it's resale value might be affected by it's unusualness.
as explained above...with 'regular' gauge strings you may find the tension a bit low...so upping the gauge should solve that bill wyman used short scale and flats and got on ok
Just interested as to how many of our members have joined/actively use Talkbass! Personally I've never felt the need to use it as I find this forum a lot more relevant and informative. The idea of dealing with our inferior trans-atlantic brethren doesn't exactly appeal to me either! Actually, on that note, I'm just wondering what gear I'd currently be using had it not been for Basschat. I can't even begin to think how much this forum has affected my buying (and selling) habits Danny
i am a newbie but enjoy the breadth of the forum topics and the uk based chat i am not keen on TB but am a long standing member of hcbf and ebassist bloody both mate!
I have this; Evil. Super neck. (think Sterling, or more less tapered jazz) Virtually flat fretboard. Plays brilliantly. Wasn't made for me. It's the prototype! 18v electrics, East E-pro EQ, Seymour Duncan Pick-up, active/passive switching, Series/Parallel switching. All I'd change is the fretboard- for Ebony or Maple, although the Rosewood is a good example of what it should sound like. As for Mike, I can't speak highly enough of him. One of the nicest guys I've met. Nothing is too much trouble, and he'll talk bass for hours if you let him. He knows his stuff! Seek him out in his Witham Workshop.
i never bought a zoot but was in touch with mike just when iceni were starting up he did two scratchplates for my manson to a template i sent him and they fitted perfectly and some bart stuff.. great guy and willing to help in any way cheers
