With a Jazz bass you have a separate volume control for each pickup. That means you have the option of soloing either pickup if you wish, or having both on full. But you can also blend the pickups by, eg having the front pickup on full volume, and the back pickup half volume. That's actually a lot more versatile than a three way switch. Other basses will have a blend control, where you can dial in different amounts of each pickup. Again, more versatile than a three way switch. FWIW Rickenbackers have a three way switch, and separate volume controls - which I've never quite understood!
i used to wonder why as well and came to this conclusion set the volume for each pup...then combine??..still seems a bit odd...
Hi all, I am currently using a Carlsbro 4x12 cab and an Ashdown EB180 115 combo on top, conected together. This works well and I'v got a great sound, but I don't want to cart around the Ashdown combo as well when we start gigging. I want to DI straight into the mixer and am looking for a head to cut down on space/weight. I'm thinking of the Marshall MB450H head, my mates got one and says it's good. I don't understand Watts and ohms and what means what!! My Carlsbro vintage 4x12 says 120 watts, 16 ohms. Is this good or bad, and will a 450watt head sound ace with this cab. Thanks in advance, Hitchy.
4 speakers 16 ohms...interesting....wonder how its wired...or if it uses 4 ohm speakers ?

Courier points system and courier issues
What's the bets that you can't make a claim for not delivering as per the contract because there's some small print that mentions 'weather conditions' or 'seasonal variation (Christmas)'!
we will come to that later...i have balls!! the tamworth depot managed to disgorge the item at 16:20 and its on its way to dundee..overnight i think there are too many irons in the fire as far as interparcel are concerned and they shouldnt quote others parameters unless they accept responsibility for any over runs in schedules.. any way santa's sleigh is free now... -

E-Bay Horror Stories (Or humourous Ones!)
mrcrow replied to bassatnight's topic in General Discussion
Folks, I have just put a couple of basses on E-Bay and have been inundated with stupid and in some cases incredible questions from potential buyers already. I have put a few of them below for your entertainment put have obviously removed the names etc - can anyone else top them!? HI, I am seeing your bass on Web and want it. I have £150 I know that is lower than your starting cost but I am quite poor and like basses I think it is good to help poor people can I have your bass for that cost or lower please/? Hey, I am new to E-bay can I reserve your bass as I get paid next week and will hopefully have the money then? Hi, What is the reserve price? (I had 7 messages asking this) Hey, I live near you can you call me? I could put more up but I am still laughing/crying over these ones! Steve.
never had any useless emails on ebay except the two ...how much to send to italy which i think were genuine i have had instruments on a uk site which costs £1 a month for 8 months...most have sold to genuine..obviously..buyers but i still get the ones which ask the price condition and would i take £3,000 more by bankers draft and the courier will pick it up in the morning.. apart from the obvious scam and poor english...all the particulars are on the site with comprehensive photos in a flikr slide show i report them to the website and they list them on a black list -
Thanks mrcrow, yeah I've been googling around too. I thought some sort of varitone type thing might be available??? I'm awful at soldering, I'm sure I read somewhere about a type of prewired harness where the pups would be clipped in??? Of course, I could be talking total nonsense
if you dont want to solder you can use electronic glue wire glue if it does as it says...then it should be more than sufficient...most soldered joints in a bass guitar circuit arent mechanical joints and dont transfer loading worth a try if you dont want to learn the solder way
-
Would anybody know where these are available from in the UK? I'm looking for a solderless option if possible. Cheers
had a quick google but cant see anything you would still need to solder the pup though?...or does it come with pup is it a problem to solder
When the nut fell off I took it to a guitar tech. He put the nut back on and new strings and I noticed he'd done some filing in the grooves on the nut. There is no buzzing apart from on 4th fret d string. I suppose only certain gauge strings will fit into the grooves on the nut because the ones i've got on at the moment go on fine but the ones I recently tried just would not fit into the grooves. I've never had problems with different string gauges on other basses!
no one does either...are you trying to put on really big guages..
No. Some players have even been known to disconnect tone pots altogether if they're not used. Cheers
the best solution...or just ease off the cap connection

Setting up a bass - what's different?
mrcrow replied to Ancient Mariner's topic in Repairs and Technical
Hi guys - my first thread here. I'm about to acquire my first bass in nearly 30 years (had an Avon EB0 copy as a teenager) and I'm pretty sure it'll need setting up, judging by the video demo the current owner made. I'm quite happy working on guitars, doing everything from fret leveling to pickup replacement, and although a bass is superficially the same, I'm sure there's subtle tricks specific to bass for getting it right. So this is a request for knowledge - what should I do that's different from a guitar. Please share your tips to make a bass play and sound great. Thanks gents.
hi and welcome if you are a player and have done the hard stuff already then you will see the bass is just a piece of wood..longer ...with strings...longer which needs bow...slightly more...and set up..i guess slightly more all than guitar setting the pups height and intonation are last and you have probably done this many times the concepts are the same...the parameters vary -

Can some one explain the whole Musicman, Stingray, Sterling thing
mrcrow replied to dave_bass5's topic in Bass Guitars
After spending a small fortune on my DJ5 recently im just not liking it. I think its down to the wood but its got a very deep tone that i really cant get in to. I expect ill sell it and take a huge loss but i think its for the best. The Musicman type of bass is the one area ive never looked at and it seems very confusing. I know i do like the tone and i played a 5 string recently that felt really nice but i have no idea what it was. So im really just looking for some ideas on whats what in this type of bass. what's a good one to go for, anything to be avoided etc. I guess price wise im looking at what ever i can get for the Lakland or failing that around £500 if i decide to keep it. Not bothered if its 4 or 5 string at the moment. How do the necks compare to, say a Fender P or Jazz? Cheers for any info.
my only foray into musicman land was a SR5 with 3 band eq perfect bass for me..but the 5th string wasnt my scene my wish for a 4 is the standard one pup ray with 3 band rosewood and warmth are my playing style colours dont come in to it nor scratchplate co ordination white on white would be perfect all round there must be some lemons out there so i cant say its the worlds perfect bass...but suited me fine -
Er... Big Bag of oven chips !
got it in one...that is one big oven chip... the cooker broke down and with some fiddling with fuses and such got it going again may be a takeaway tonight
But when you do ´accidentally´ bash them against someone´s head (usually the singer) they always stay in tune.
i was sort of thinking that as i cant sing...either
-
this is probably why they never caught on a bit way out in shape and inconclusive as an icon follower
-
i used to fancy one...for size mainly...d i dont know how the idea came about but its still a nut to bridge tensioned piece of bass string with pups to catch the signal i think they look a bit strange and dont have any protection for bashing the 'headstock' against peoples heads... ^_^
-
its Gm..so if you want to go down...and keep the tonality you need to use minor keys whatever fits your voice range....take the highest note and come down from that...

hi jack you dont live in the back of the greta garbo home for wayward boys and girls...by any chance... http://www.sing365.com/music/lyric.nsf/My-...8256EE0000FDCB0 here you are you cheeky monkey 1) How long have you been playing Bass Guitar/String Bass for or both? 20 YEARS 2) If you don’t play string bass/bass guitar have you thought of doubling up on either to get more recognition as a bass player? N/A..ps i doubled on bass from saxes and woodwind 3) Who are your favourite exponents of both string bass/bass guitar? ABRAHAM LABORIEL SENIOR...RE LIFT HIM UP CD 4) Do you think that both the bass guitar and string bass are important as bass instruments? BOTH ARE IMPORTANT FOR THE SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS OF THE ARRANGER 5) What genres do you think are important for bass players to listen to? CLASSICAL AND JAZZ 6) Do you think electric guitarists can learn to play bass guitar more than string bass? SHAPE AND METHOD OF USE OF ELECTRIC BASS IS SIMILAR TO ELECTRIC GUITAR..UPRIGHT BASS IS EVEN HARD FOR AN ELECTRIC BASSIST...NEED TO PRACTICE HAND POSITIONS AND GET USED TO NO FRETS 7) Do you think bass can be used to solo as well as accompany other instruments? IT IS AT PRESENT IN JAZZ..YES! 8) Do you think it is important to learn to sight read? VERY IMPORTANT..IT HELPS THE PLAYER TO UNDERSTAND COMPOSITION AND STRUCTURE...AND THOSE ELUSIVE DYNAMICS WHICH SEEM TO HAVE BEEN FORGOTTEN 9) What do you think of bass guitars such as 5 string/6 string e.g. as being an add-on to the bass players role? NOT ESSENTIAL IN A VAST AMOUNT OF CASES...THEY AFFORD GREATER RANGE BUT INCLUDE THE TONAL RANGE OF THE FOUR STRING...IN MY OPINION ARE HYBRID AS OPPOSED TO A BROTHER INSTRUMENT AS IN OBOE/COR FLUTE/PICCOLO 10) What are your opinions on electric upright basses as a substitute for the string bass? I DONT PLAY THEM TO BE ABLE TO BE DEFINITE BUT I THINK A MIKED UP OR AMPLIFIED STRING BASS HAS MORE FIDELITY TO ORIGINAL TONE AGAINST AN ELECTRIC UPRIGHT...WOOD AND SOUND CHAMBER ARE CRITICAL TO UPRIGHT CLARITY OF TONE 11) What is the best amp to use for bass guitar or string bass? MANUFACTURERS VARY IN COLOURATION OF TONE..BUT I WOULD SUGGEST A SEPARATE AMPLIFIER TO CABINET ALLOWS MORE FLEXIBILITY FOR ADAPTATION. THIS IS A DIFFICULT QUESTION TO ANSWER RE: BEST 12) What pickups for string bass are the best for capturing the natural tone of the instrument? I AM NOT AWARE OF ALL THE ALTERNATIVES BUT WOULD HAZARD A GUESS AT PIEZO AS BEING NON MAGNETIC PRODUCED SIGNAL AND PERHAPS MORE WOODY BEING PART OF THE BUILD OF THE BASS there we are! glad to be of some assistance the mysterious crow
ok boys and girls, ive noticed the odd bass having these thumb rests on them. now im sure the answer is in the name of the product haha, but im just curious when you would use them. during playing, my thumb rests on the pickup of my jag and when im idol, im usually scratching something. so at what point would you use the thumb rest. im in no way interested in buying one just been curious for a while. cheers steven
if you dont use them all the time...then i think they are pointless and inhibit movement of your plucking/fingering hand like ashtrays they are cobwebs from the past..and imho dont add to tone or playability
