My first one had this fault, got it changed for another, it had the same fault. Changed the valve myself in the second one and it works fine now. The valve might just need re-seating every now and again as it works loose with vibration from travel (and sitting on top of a vibrating box all night). Mine developed the hum once more, with the new valve, a well aimed tap on the top is a quick fix during a gig, then open it up at home and tighten up the valve you should be rocking again. Just thought I'd point this out because the price is an absolute bargain for what seems like a very minor fault. And a great amp!
It would be a much more useful light if it came on when the amp actually hit the hard limiter (and/or clipped) instead of lighting when the soft limiter starts working.
I agree, it freaked me out the first time I saw it flickering away. I think amber for soft limiter turning to red for hard limit/clip would be much more helpful. Sometimes when I'm not looking at it I wonder how long the light is staying on for and at what point is it actually starting to hit the hard limiter...

Wal Bass Growl? Anything Else Like It?
brensabre79 replied to x_Morning_Star_x's topic in Bass Guitars
THE thing that sets the Wal sound apart is the bandpass filter tone control. The best thing you can get thats close to this is an East EQ, it will get you close. There's nothing special about a Wal except for the electronics (without them its pretty much the same as a Jazz bass really) and honestly unless you have the tronics, or something very close its not going to get that 'Wal sound'! Enormous humbuckers, (and individual ones for each string) combined with the bandpass filter EQ is what you need... -

advice on refinishing a body - HELP!!
brensabre79 replied to barryman's topic in Repairs and Technical
Removing existing depends on what it is, so need to find this out first. If its Nitro its easier to get rid of with chemicals (not good for the environment or you though!) If its poly, its likely to be almost impervious to stripping chemicals so you'll have to sand it or heat gun and scraper it (careful not to burn the wood). Its a lot of hard hard work to remove a poly finish normally. Here's a bodge solution though, that may work... Sand the gloss finish just enough so you have something to 'cut' into (i.e. make it dull but don't go down to the wood). Then spray a few coats of a stain (poly) until you get the shade you want, then a few coats of clear satin (poly). Polish etc. and you'll have the colour you want and the matt/satin finish you want. -
Looks like someone started with a light coat of nitromors... ...then stuck it on ebay.
I hope I'm wrong but I fear you'll be left wondering "is that it?" after all that work.
ditto, hence my suggestion of just using two of them! You don't have to use them all just because you have them. And yes, you'll get more volume out of just the 2x10s than you will out of the lot combined in this way. Plus you'll have less to carry - which you'll appreciate at the end of your first gig with that setup!

This is the trouble with bespoke basses though, and the reason they don't always hold their value. Bernie is a great guy, and his basses are awesome to play. Ask him to build a bass to your spec and he'll do it. Whether anyone else likes that spec is another matter entirely! I bought a Jazz bass a few years ago and someone had gone to great time and expense to fit gold hardware throughout. I thought it looked awful. To each their own...

All above is correct, but I put it to you.... Do you need to run all of the speakers? It doesn't necessarily follow that it will be louder, or sound better. It's generally not the best thing to mix speaker sizes unless you're bi-amping or have a X-over of course. Because EQ adjustment that works with one speaker may well make the other worse! Each of your 2x10 cabs will be either 4 ohms or 16 ohms depending on how you wire them. So if you use both of your 2x10 (without the 15) you can get the total to be 8 ohms, which will work fine. stack them sideways and you'll have a very tall rig which will sound great everywhere in the room! Or if you really want to use the 15, you could use the 15 and one of the 2x10s for the same effect. But remember that the power will be distributed equally between the speakers, so each of the 10" speakers will be working as hard at producing the same frequencies as the 15" Quite why you'd need to use all 5 speakers with a 250w amp I don't know. I reckon one of your 2x10s will be plenty, and at 4ohms you'll get the most from your amp.

Not saying you do this Kev, but when I used to do sound for 3 or 4 bands a night at a venue I noticed a lot of players who had all the pre-shape buttons in and graphics on (set to smiley face or sad face depending on the music) and usually loads of pedals. The general theme I observed was: Graphic set to smiley face, pre-shape to add treble and bass, then some sort of mid/level boosting pedal to counteract the whole thing, or in some cases, they would just complain they couldn't hear themselves on stage, whilst the rest of the band would say the bass is too loud because their internal organs are vibrating. No mids see... I'd usually DI straight from the bass (before the pedals) and get pretty much the same sound out of the PA as they had from their amp without touching a dial! The lesson? You might find all of the things in your signal chain counteract each other, then again like Kev, you might not. But its worth a fiddle
Setting the dials/sliders to "Flat" on an amp doesn't mean the sound is a flat response, you're getting how the manufacturers want the amp to sound. So Flat on an Ampeg is different to Flat on a Hartke & so on.
+1 its important to get the right amp. The only EQ I use is to compensate for the room acoustics if required. I use the EQ on my bass if I need a bit more top or boom for a particular song. Otherwise its flat, because I've got the bass, amp and cabinet that's right for me. EQ is just for compensating really, for the wrong amp, cabinet, bass or room

For rates, I'd look at the Musicians Union, you should join anyway! As to how to get in to the industry properly, we're all trying to figure that one out! Take a look at classifieds, get yourself a copy of The Stage and maybe get yourself an agent? Depends on what sort of work you want really...

Do I need a new preamp valve in my Hartke HA3500?
brensabre79 replied to kryptonicwatermelon's topic in Amps and Cabs
The solid state pre should still be working fine if its just the tube shouldn't it? unless it goes through the tube first and then through the SS. Either way, might be worth replacing the tube anyway they don't cost much, unless you stick a NOS Mullard in there like i did -
Compact stand for offset bodied bass
brensabre79 replied to Roland Rock's topic in Accessories and Misc
I would also like to know this. I cannot find anything more appropriate than this but I'm not convinced. I've not seen one of them hangars that stick out of your amps jack socket things. Somehow the idea of the jack socket of my little car stereo amp supporting the weight of my bass fills me with dreadful thoughts of crackling amp cutting out halfway through the set! That or the bass falling over and taking the amp with it! -
Aren't you meant to sit on top of it and ride it down the stairs?

Modifying a squire p bass. Recommended hardware/pick ups
brensabre79 replied to ken_white's topic in Repairs and Technical
Changing pickups will have the most dramatic effect on the sound, probably for the better from stock Squier. I would wholeheartedly recommend Wizard, I replaced the pickups in my Squier VM with Wizards and it sounded awesome! It depends what you want though, power and brightness or vintage warmth... different ones do different things. Changing the wiring will have less of an effect, to be honest if the volume and tone controls work theres not much point in fixing. Some people will try and sell you on the idea of a really old oil filled capacitor for that vintage vibe - honestly it doesn't do that much. More expensive pots will last longer and feel smoother, but if its not broke... i would spend the money on the pickups! The best thing you could do is make sure the whole thing is properly screened to get rid of interference. Changing hardware will have a small effect on the playing, and a little bit on the sound. Change to a high mass bridge for more sustain and a more solid feel to the strings. Change the tuners if you have issues with them, but not that important if they work OK. Changing the nut will also improve the tone and sustain of open strings (and may make fretted notes a it easier if its done properly). This should be combined with a professional set-up and a new set of strings -
Class D. Going back to the traditional ways now...
brensabre79 replied to Clarky72's topic in General Discussion
Sorry the Shuttle didn't work out for you Steve, I did find mine a bit clinical at first, but I swapped the valve in it (big improvement despite what people say) and also go through a DHA pedal for a bit more of the warm and fuzzy. The Streamliner might have been more your cuppa... But glad to hear you're happy with the GK - that's a proper ROCK amp, Duff would be proud -
