Thought I'd give a quick update. Last night was the first opportunity I had to sit down with the TFR and Musket pedals I built. The Musket is the hands down winner for me. So flexible and can get SUPER aggressive. Just haven't clicked with the TFR, although I'm not convinced I haven't made a boo boo somewhere in the build! It sounds REALLY congested, although it has lots of the standard TFR cap values replaced with higher values for bass use. I think further tinkering is required so I'll add a blend and mid control while I'm at it. Maybe add switchable diode options too...
If you're building it yourself, then really it's choosing the base circuit then picking the mods that suit you. For me, on bass anyway, the Green Russian Muff is the best starting point, mod for lower frequencies it you like, add mids, a blend of you like, done. I built a GGG green Russian, added a mids pot and it's very cool! Si
Any suggestions on a decent blend circuit Si? Is a paralooper overkill?
Here's a great tool I've found which will help if you're struggling to visualise your Maruszczyk custom build... http://www.ysw-tct.com/tct/default.asp?func=KIJI&kiji=20141229114253.asp#Kisekae_VIM
No wonder you keep fiddling with your spec when you play with things like that WoT!

How long have you got? Everybody will have a different take on this. My first question, as someone who was pedal free for 2 decades, would be why do you NEED pedals? Correction? Texture? Fill out sound when guiturd player takes a solo?
You do need more than 12dB/ octave for thump elimination.
Correct. We were talking 2 12dB/octave high pass filters in series to get 24dB/octave.

Has anybody asked how much the fan fret option costs yet?...

Interested to know your thoughts with regard to the CTM100 vs OTB500, which I've owned before... or vs LB30 (currently have a CTM30) for that matter!

I bought the TFR kit with a pre-drilled 3 hole enclosure (I HATE drilling aluminium!!!) but have a 4 hole one knocking around so could stick a mids knob in no problem, obviously with the appropriate resistor and cap swaps to start from a flat response. I'll try it standard first and tweak it a little as I go like I did with the blueberry that started all this dirt nonsense!

What's the best practice amp for my requirements?
Bigwan replied to highwayman's topic in Amps and Cabs
I'll roll out my old fav again - find a used Line6 Studio 110. A 12" cube with 10" speaker, 75 watts, 4 amp models (plus a synth and a secret hidden amp model), aux in, headphone socket and DI out for recording or, gasp, gigging through PA. Absolutely adored the one I had and would buy another tomorrow. About £100ish used, but seem to be universally loved (never heard anybody say they didn't like them to be honest, unlike some of the bigger Line6 amps) so don't seem to come up for sale that often. As Phil says, the Zoom B1ON would take some beating, but count on buying decent headphones. The PJB ones are excellent. -
I've started building both a Tall Font Russian Muff with bass mods AND a Musket, both based on Fuzz Dog's kits. Should have them operational by the end of the week with any luck!

I never understood why Ashdown didn't do a combo version of the 1x15 or 4x8 cab. I know the 4x8 was a pretty hefty wee cab itself so that might have had something to do with it, but why not the 15? That plus matching extension cab would have been a great little rig! I still keep an eye for a pair of matching 4x8 Ashdown mini cabs...
-
I have one too. Mine is UK built with celestion and cloth grill. They're a rather awesome little amp. I'll never part with mine. I believe there was a short lived 1x12 cab in the mini series and slightly larger 2x10 and 1x15 extension cabs that were the same height as the C110 is wide. If I saw another of these for sale locally I'd have it bought in a heartbeat!
My fave for a warm subtle overdrive to pair with a P and flats is the Bearfoot Blueberry. It's a dark sounding pedal though and not the best for aggressive pick playing (for which I turn to either an Aguilar Agro, Two Notes Le Bass or Pike Vulcan). Definitely check out the VT Bass, that can cover a wide range and sounds great. If there's one thing I've learnt from all my years of pedal fiddling though, it's that everyone's ears, opinions, gear and playing styles are different, and you can't even rely on a YouTube demo most of the time. The true path to enlightenment requires buying and selling to try as many as you can to see what works for you!
I can +1 the Blueberry, although mine has a bit of a twist. I built my own to BJFE specs then made a few mods to brighten it a little. As Danny says they're a little dark as standard. For me it's a great pedal. Better than the EHX Bass Soul Food that will no doubt be suggested. If diy isn't an option you could try the uber bee from bearfoot.
I have a feeling I might just end up with this and the MXR and call it a day.
Wash your mouth out! You know there's no such thing as a destination in this game - just a journey! Edit: the Mr Black sounds AWESOME...

Our gigs cancelled at request of 'name' tribute act
Personally I think Limehouse Lizzy are completely up themselves after reading this. The time gap between your gigs and theirs, not even at the same venue.... pathetic.
I know the drummer from Limehouse Lizzy. He is certainly not "up himself". -
That said, the instructions could be clearer in parts.
He's not the only one guilty of that though! I think Madbean are the best with their instructions, but they don't sell kits. Poodle has been good with his bass specific kits the last few years after asking for input on his facebook page.

Sold a VT Bass pedal to Stewart. Payment was prompt and comms were spot on. Nice!
Did you measure the bias voltage or just adjust by ear? I built a Ginger a few months ago and set the bias around 6v as suggested on the ROG site, and it's very polite - have to get beyond 12 o'clock to get any appreciable break up. Perhaps because I'm using log taper pots? I really like the Ginger, though I occasionally feel that it might be lacking a bit of bass. I have the parts for an SFT build now, which hopefully I'll get done over the Easter period. It'll be interesting to compare the two.
Spent a good half hour tuning the Ginger last night. Sounds great now! Highlights the loud low B issue on my Sire 5 string. Everything sounds sweet but B distorts like mad. Not the end of the world! My only problem now is I had some nice vintage-boss style knobs set aside for it, but they don't fit! Stuck some Davies/Two Rock style knobs on in the meantime. Blowerbox next! Think I'll go perfboard instead of stripboard/vero...
