1. This thread only goes to highlight something I've come to realise myself after trying out quite a few filters over the years (not as many as some here!). Filters are a VERY personal thing, more heavily reliant on the person playing them (and their equipment and setup) than pretty much any other effect. What works best for one person may be a steaming pile of poo for the next person!!!
2. Good call on the Ampeg. That's a possibility, if I can live with the baked-in Ampeg-ness! An sfx custom isn't beyond the realms of possibility either I suppose... Must send a wee query email through.
3. Can anyone suggest an alternative to the discontinued 3leaf enabler? I've had 2 before and regret selling them both. Now I want another there are none around! Anyone suggest an alternative that has the same functionality? Only thing I can think of is the EBS Microbass but it doesn't have the dedicated Aux-in for headphones only (for IEM use - looking ahead here!).
4.
I would very much like to be top of the queue, thanks.
PM me your address Gary. I'll pop it in the post tomorrow.
5. With A View from the Side, musician Michael Visceglia attempts to give the reader a window in which to view the lives, aspirations, adventures and misadventures, phenomenal successes and tragic failures of some of the leading practitioners of an art that he is intimately familiar with: playing the bass. Through stories of his own experiences, along with the interviews and profiles of his influential peers, Visceglia provides a compelling look at the nature of the pursuit of the artistic life. Good for a once through! Form a queue!
6. It's the distorted sound after 3 or 4 seconds that doesn't sound right to me. All analogue octavers will lose the note after a period of time, but lose a good note in 3 seconds? Not on any I've played. And it wouldn't distort, it'd dance around the note it'd been on previously for a while.
7. Gutted...
8. Something not right. I had one briefly and the tracking was excellent - I have heard some folk say they've had tracking issues with them though...
9. I hated the AG500 I had. Couldn't get a sound out of it that I liked. I haven't heard a bad report about the TH series really so don't see how it would be much of a downgrade. Totally different tone though. Fat and vintage. I've been keeping an eye on used prices for the Tonehammer series. The 350 seems to hover around £300 to £330. The 500 just over £100 more.
10. Sounds typical of playing lower notes on the neck (typically lower than an A, but I've seen worse cases), but shouldn't be breaking up so soon higher up the neck. With Octave pedals there's a lot to consider to ensure clean tracking. Keep it as close to the beginning of your chain as possible. A clean sounding bass setup is important too. Fret rattle can play havoc with tracking, as can dead notes on the neck.
11. Excellent work. I love it!
12. For more peaky filter sounds I'd say the MXR BEF would be a safe bet.
13. 39 in a fortnight. Head says I'm still in my early 20's, body doesn't know what's going on!
14. I'd second trying out a Sire. I haven't had a JO5 personally, but have had a 55-01, a 55-02dlx and a JO4. I'd rate the Sire as at least level with the best of them overall... The Lakland 5 necks are pretty special though!
15. Only the Octave left folks... Ironic that I thought it'd be the first to go!
16.
Mine doesn't do the volume drop either. Tvr, I reckon with that and the binding issue you've got perfectly valid reasons to request a replacement from Thomann. Get in touch with them, I reckon.
I'd second that. The fret alone is enough reason.
17. It makes the B string on mine a bit of a monster, but it is what it is. It's one reason the likes of Sadowsky keep their 5 string radii quite flat. That and the fact the edge of the fingerboard gets to be too thin. 7 1/4" radius always sounded like madness on a 5 to me, but I'm growing to like it... Which is a slight worry as I have a flat fingerboard ACG in the works!!!

Has anyone tried building a combined hpf/lpf pedal? Azure Skies over on TB seems to be making a bit of a splash with his. Some folk using the hpf like the thumpinator, others using the combination of both filters to replicate speaker cab frequency response before a DI. Looks like it would be a cool addition to a lot of boards!
19.
What difference do they make other than asthetics and now looks like the neck has wood worm (which to me asthetics is now not good)? I realise these are better tuners, but better how? I've done over 50 gigs with my V7 and never had any tuning issues so I don't think they are sub standard.
I agree there's nothing functionally wrong with the Sire tuners. Weight is an issue though! Can save nearly 1/2 pound with the hipshot tuners in some cases. Change out the bridge for a lighter unit you could be nearly a full pound better off. I'm actually surprised there hasn't been more made of these as a modding platform. Not saying they need it, but you know how some folks are!
20.
Done. Shame about the old screwholes but I can live with it. The difference in quality between these and the stock tuners is vast. So very glad I made this mod. It's the only one I'll be making to this bass Incidentally, that D string tuner might look pissed in the photo, but it's not in reality. I've just checked and it's as straight as an arrow. Who says the camera never lies?
Notice much of a difference in weight? My Sire is about 10 1/2 lbs so if this mod could knock a bit off that it'd be worthwhile!
21. I'd say headphones too. I have the PJB Bighead and PJB headphones and it's a great setup. Aux in from phone or tablet for learning songs or lessons from Scott's Bass Academy. Works as USB interface too. It is clean though. Crystal clear. If you want more of an amp sound you could add a Zoom multi effect. I have B3 myself which is also excellent and will work for what you want on its own if you don't need an Aux in. The B1 series have Aux in so would cover your needs, with the same sounds as the B3. If you're set on an amp I was always a big fan of the (now discontinued) Line6 Studio 110. It's a 12" cube with 75 watts into a 10" speaker. Also has Aux in and a headphone out which gives you options. You don't see them for sale very often. People seem to hold onto them! The Roland Bass cube 30 also seems to get a lot of love and having briefly tried it I can see why. I don't think either of these options would keep your neighbours happy though. Bass travels pretty well...
22.
Aside from the product overview, I'd like to thank Billy for making the endorsement thing clear that I see SOOOOOO many people getting wrong. Who endorses who..
He's been around long enough to have seen it from both sides I would think. He speaks a lot of sense! I met him at a signing before a clinic in Manchester in '95 and he doesn't seem to have aged a day!
