Interested in your findings too. I like the cobalt roundwounds and have yet to find a set of flats that have really clicked with me. GHS bright flats have been the best so far.

+1. Already been said but I'd just use the Genz and Berg you already have if it was me. Hardly classifies as physically huge - same stage footprint as most smaller combos, even if it is tall. And the Genz features one of those magical volume controls I hear so much about nowadays! ;-p

The Chord OC-50 (or is it OC-80... can't remember) is a great wee octave. It's a boss octave clone I believe, but has an extra "drive" switch (turns off the -2 octave) which sounds quite synthy. Mine tracked really well down to a sustained F# which surprised me - most give up at A in my experience! Sold it for tuppence... idiot... I have an EHX Octave Multiplexer which is a nice sounding octave on a budget (i think it sounds nicer than the oc2 derivatives myself) but it doesn't track as well. I have the COG T65 too. Again loosely oc2 based but with a +1 octave instead of a -2 and a tone control on the -1 octave similar to the Aguilar Octamizer. It's part of a double effect with a Mastotron-type fuzz, but that's a different price point altogether. Sounds inhuman though! Dirty synthy either with or without the fuzz.

Bumping this up as I just watched this documentary yesterday. Incredibly inspiring stuff. Actually I put it on while at work and wasn't really paying attention - not even to Abe Laboriel! It was the bass playing and bass sound about 6-7 minutes in that caught my ear (a bit of digging revealed it'a a guy called Rich Moore playing his Wyn with the Mark Lalama Trio - tasty! I now NEED to get some wenge back in my life!). Wound it back to the start and watched the whole thing, followed by all 16 of the "steps to build a bass" series.

VVT vs VBT depends on the bass for me. On a jazz it HAS to be vvt - there are sounds in there you just can't get with a balance control in my experience. With a PJ I find it doesn't matter so much - a switch would do instead as I find mixing the P and J doesn't work that well. Talking passive electronics here though. A few "I'd imagine" type comments, but from bitter experience MAKE SURE YOURSELF! Measure everything twice before buying anything. Not all Fender pickup routes are the same, especially with their 5 string basses - some of their Mexican 4 strings have the same size route for neck and bridge pickups and some have the mounting lug locations in different places for the same size pickup body. Hurrah for standardization!!! Measure twice, cut once!

I was always an Elites Stainless Steel fan, but I have a set of Ernie Ball Cobalts on the P at the minute and they're fantastic. Might carry on with them depending how they wear.

It was a highly recommended rig around here a few years ago so bound to be somebody along with experience in a wee while!

Guy kept it for 2 weeks then sold it on eBay to some punter in the states for another 400 on top of that. Probably about 2 grands worth now at least. Was in bad nick when I got it, and not the most desirable top wood (padouk with sap wood), but sounded great! Miss it sometimes... Always on the lookout for serial number 2062!

Got a Wal for £550 about 13 years ago, just before they took a serious upswing in price. Wasn't a huge bargain at the time, but turned into one! Same local shop (which never has ANYTHING bass related in) had a pretty minty, all original, white, maple boarded '76 Jazz at the same time and same price... Should have bought it too!
