1. I bought one from Gareth/Walbassist a while back, along with the PJB headphones, and it's a cracking setup. The Big Head comes with a full complement of hookup leads, including a mini jack to 1/4" for using it as a preamp, which is nice. Great sound, way louder than you'd ever need, small, really well built. My only complaint is I don't have rubber feet on mine so it slides around a wee bit. I'd like to see a mobile phone-like rubber sleeve available for it because it could scratch a table if it were pulled around or dropped.
  2.
I own a V4 (mint condition!). A beautiful amp! Good luck with the restauration!
My that's a lot of preamp! 8 valves!
  3. The public-peace youtube channel has lots of good stuff too - Adrian is a tasty player, and I could listen to him talk all day!
  4.
The Mk3 shape is as light and ergonomic as any other modern bass. It has a smaller body, longer top horn and hipshot ultralights, it also doesn't have the paddle headstock. I played a four string version at a recent visit to Wal HQ and it was one of the lightest basses I've played. The Mk1 (whilst iconic) is a shape and design born of the late 70s where weight didn't seem to be a consideration...
Wish that had been the case when Wals were more affordable - might still have mine if it had!
  5. A TR should never be adjusted under full string tension! It's expecting a lot of an 3/16" steel rod. Manual manipulation of the neck is the answer. If it's getting hard to adjust I'd loosen it off, clamp the neck in the rough shape you think it needs to be in (search YouTube for "Dan Erlewine Straightening Bass Neck"), then tighten the rod.
  6. VERY interesting!!!
  7. They're heavy, cumbersome beasts in my experience. Big old neck on the one I had. Didn't balance well with the short upper horn (Mark 1 shape). They need to be wrestled with which isn't what most people want in a bass - I certainly didn't. Sound bloody good but not worth the money they currently fetch while we're on the subject (IMHO, YMMV and all that)...
  8.
Yes Chris, I did post this on TB just to get some feedback. I am in the UK, N. Ireland. We have very few good local music shops. Most carry the entry level budget stuff, although I noticed earlier today that one shop has some of the TC heads which I can try out.
I have a barefaced retro 2x10 (not for sale!) if you'd like to try it out. I'm in Ballymena.

    EBS Reidmar
There's also Reidmar 750 I understand: http://www.iguitarmag.com/news/2015/04/ebs-expands-reidmar-series-with-reidmar-750-lightweight-bass-amp/
Hmm... I wouldn't have believed it of EBS. 750 "dynamic" watts! What are they? Iguitar compare the 750 "watts" of this model to the 470 of the current Reidmar... Which is actually rated at 250 watts rms.
  10.
I've decided to join this party and ordered a Kahuna uke - let's see what happens . What could possibly go wrong?
I did the same... Mine is out for delivery at the minute so might be waiting for me when I get home! Be interesting to compare it to my Kala, which is nothing to write home about to be honest!
  11. I've watched the first 2 parts but not the 3rd yet. The first 2 were enough to push me over the edge to sign up for the SBL Academy yesterday - my wimpy internet connection was a bit of a concern but so far it's holding up just fine!
  12.
Owned this and the Boss too...massive performance difference - again, get the Boss I think the the 'made in the same factory' myth was probably stared by the same company...lol The only good thing to say about these knockoffs is the the chassis are solid and as good as the Boss, after that the similarities end. It's a shame, but a fact.
I love it when folks quote opinion as fact!
  13.
i've owned both too and can categorically say they don't perform exactly the the same. Do yourself a favour, get the Boss!
We'll have to agree to disagree on this one. The HB worked as well for me as the boss had previously and at a quarter of the price, but YMMV.

    Jazz
A new Harley Benton "decoration only" 75 J arrived yesterday from everyones favourite German musical instrument monolith... Plays great, sounds great with the Wilkinson pups and looks great... all £32 of it
That's just mad... And it's your fault I've just bought a Deko Kahuna uBass clone... Hard not to when you're getting it for £39 delivered. The Aguila strings alone are £25-worth!
  15. We've had quite a lot of similar gear over the years Dave - I used to own your old Lakland 55-01 too! I've been around here long enough to recognise that there are certain people with similar tastes to mine, and if they like something, there's a fair chance I'll like it too (WoT, discrete, Walbassist, you!). Being based, pardon the pun, in Northern Ireland means there's no chance (and I mean zero, nada, zilch) of trying out the majority of new gear people post on here without travelling to do it, and that's not always possible. Basing (again with the puns) buying decisions on other people's taste might seem risky, but it's worked out pretty well for me so far! Unfortunately I haven't had much time with my V7 yet - been a mad few weeks round here - but so far I'm pretty impressed. I want to get rid of the blend control and convert it to 2 volumes but I'll get round to that somewhere along the way. Part of me wishes I'd ordered the 4 string V7, but that's a constant argument I have with myself...
  16.
WOT - fuelling GAS since time immemorial.
Fixed that for you there!
  17.
They sound like a right bunch of a**holes to be honest... I'd not be putting up with that, plenty of other covers bands out there
This, or
Call his bluff, tell him your taking a break next month but your happy to lend him a Bass.
plus unavailability of said 4x4 and trailer. Let the gits hump their own gear...
  18. Apparently my weighing arm is off - 10lb 1oz on the scales... doesn't feel that heavy! Balance is excellent though, and the preamp does sound good - always wary of "standard" preamps, especially at this price! Photos to follow!
  19. Due to not playing much at the minute, having an emotional attachment to my Ashdown ABM and wanting to gather funds for a custom bass build, I'm selling my Mesa Walkabout head before I get too attached to it! Virtually a sin, but I've only managed to switch this beauty on half a dozen times since I bought it, and all at low volumes in the house... OK there have been a few "let her rip" moments when the wife and kids were out, but when the tv control fell off the cabinet I turned it down a notch! Bought in November from funky8884 of this parish, it looks to have had an easy life before me. Condition is excellent bar a few small scratches on the bottom of the amp. Comes with a Gator gig bag and owners manual. No trades at the minute thanks. £550 plus postage. 20.
I, for one, greatly appreciate your reviews/opinions (and many other's) - including on these and the Maruszczyk's).
Make that 2! Between WoT, discreet and Walbassist I'm all GASed out...
  21. I have a 33" scale 5 string ACG - not quite 32", but certainly closer than the 35" scales I'd be more used to. The B string is a thicker gauge than my usual 35" scale, but sounds better than most of the 34" scale Bs and on par with the 35" scalers I've used so I think it's more to do with the construction of the bass than anything. It's one of the bettter B strings I've played after my 37" B Dingwall! Don't know if that's any use to you or not!
  22.
Superb How about Thomann? Do they send via the chunnel or air? Waiting on my bass coming home after repair, they sent it on Thursday of last week.
Regarding Thomann, my Sire was ordered last Thursday, shipped Monday, arrived yesterday.
  23.
Mmm. I've been toying with the idea of one of these on sale here on BC What's it like now you've had a couple of hours ?
Only really got an hour unplugged with it while Bakeoff was on last night! Very impressed so far! It's lighter than I expected - was prepared for a boat anchor going by some reviews, but it's closer to 9lbs than 10. It is a little neck heavy though so we'll have to see how it sits on a strap. Talking about the neck it feels quite 'vintage' (not the brand) with the tight fingerboard radius - very strange going from your old ACG with no radius at all to this! The blocks and binding are really nicely done. I'm not 100% on the gloss finish on the back of the neck, but that's easily sorted if needs be. The body seems to be 2 pieces of alder which aren't particularly well matched, but I didn't expect them to be for this money anyway! I've seen much bigger money instruments with the same problem. You're welcome to call round for a spin on it Michael!
Congratulations! I hope you enjoy it. Did one of your other basses sell then or did GAS take over? (I have a few of mine on gumtree now too, hoping for a local sale to save the trouble of packing and shipping.) Frank.
Ordering this is what forced me to start a clearout Frank - I'm into double figures! There'll be a few more going up for sale once they've been fettled with a little. The P-bass sold and the ATK has had LOTS of interest. Not much for the ACG though so I might put it up on here. As with you, Gumtree saves the shipping woes! Saw your G&L Tribute on Gumtree too.
Pics please!!
All in good time! I'll hopefully get a chance to tweak the action a bit,try it through my PJB Headphone setup, weigh it and get a few pics tonight.
  24. New toy arrived! Have literally just had seconds with it acoustically, but I have to say that from that I'm pretty impressed! Doesn't feel like a boat anchor either - I'd guess it's under 9.5lbs.
  25. P or J width neck on the dusty-a-like as a matter of interest?
