1. Not to derail the thread or anything but... Phwoar! Shwing! Hubba, hubba, etc
2. Looking good! Wasn't sure what I'd think of the 2 tone burst (bigger fan of that finish with maple boards), but it looks like it'll work well!
3. Limelight P bass, black, light relic, maple neck BUT with 2 Thunderbucker pickups, like a Lull PT4... Or maybe just a Lull PT4...
4.
^ This! My 5501 is my third attempt at five strings. I had a cheap perspex Wesley that I moved on quickly. Several years later, I bought an Ibanez SR405. I really wanted to like that one, but tight string spacing and a floppy B string meant it also had to go. (I'm comfortable on both P and J necks, but this felt like a guitar to me!) I recently bought a Lakland 5501 and it's simply wonderful. The fifth string is great, crystal clear and nice tension. The neck is quite chunky and the string spacing is similar to a P-bass. I can see why the 35 inch scale might be problematic for some, though it's fine for me. (My hands are pretty average sized too) Costs £699 new, but they do pop up on here used now and then.
I sold my 5501 with Bartolini NTMB preamp for £400 as the market was pretty slow at the time. There are bargains to be had! I preferred the 5501 to the 5502 dlx I had more recently. Neck is the same. It's sufficiently chunky to satisfy those that like 'proper' 5 string spacing, but it's assymetric so it doesn't feel TOO big. I believe they also have a compound fretboard radius, but I might be wrong on that.
5. I had one of these a few years back. Sounded pretty good but transport was a nightmare, especially if there was nobody to lend a hand! There are much lighter, better sounding and louder alternatives. I had a Tech Soundsystems 4x12 that ticked ALL those boxes!
6. I have no idea... If I had to guess I'd say 10, plus or minus a couple...
7. Maybe not the most obvious choice, but what about an Orange Terror bass? Can sound vintage and "tubey" with the gain low, or swap the valves for some lower gain ones for a more useful range of gain. One of my favorite amps. Some say they're tonally limited... but it's a good tone!
8. It would help if you listed what you've already tried and how big you're trying to scale up to. Maybe obvious, but why not go back to the Fender setup? I suspect I can guess why! I'd go with a trace V-type head (or pre and poweramp setup) into a sealed cab of some sort myself (or in my case a barefaced retro which is supposed to emulate something sealed).
9. May I be the first to say... Your choice of font is truly dreadful. Good luck with selling this beast though!
10. Lakland. No question. Best 5 string neck I've felt.
11. Love the look of De Gier basses. Not ENTIRELY sold on the headstock but I think it would grow on me!
12. If I didn't also have too much equipment I'd take this in a heartbeat... Can't believe it hasn't sold at this price...
13. The swamp thang is a very nice speaker. After much deliberation I put one in the D'lite combo I built for my brother a few years ago and it's perfect.
14. Interested in diy approach? I recall seeing a diy version somewhere on the internet for something similar to the pleasureboard. There's guys on YouTube making vibrating chairs for home cinema and gaming use which would be similar.
15. I prefer the GR2 I have now to the Wonderlove I had previously. Less fiddly and seems wetter. I really liked the big box qtron I had a few years ago but the 24v supply was an issue for me. Only 3leaf filter I haven't tried is the current proton. Maybe some day. Mostly liked the original version but the fixed decay wasn't for me - I actually modified mine for a longer decay (mine was the first of the first, Spencer later added an internal switch to select between 2 different values).
16.
Got my Grand Tarkin through today! Won in the Circuits To Cure Cancer auctions, I then had Tom customize the art! Apologies for the rudie: Si
Nice!
17. I remember one of the early midget reviews mentioning that the reviewer's guitarist was VERY impressed with it if that's any help...
18. By all accounts Burman are worth a look. I have a powerpak pre/poweramp setup, but I've yet to try it out with my retro 2x10...
19.
Ok, I've never played a lakland. Of any description
Sorry? Not sure I understand you? Nice Yam that!
20.
There's a bass?
Nope... No bass there...
21.
In the meantime I´m a bit further with my DIY basspreamp quest. The BP1 finds no use anymore. I´ve perfboarded a 3 stage FET preamp with with the intention to simulate the Bassman 135 preamp wit FETs. It has one volume control and a bright switch with 5 frequencies which sounds nice. After fiddling with a tonestack which I didn´t like I finally added a trusty workhorse EQ which I know very well from my studiowork. It´s a DIYed API553-stylee 3 band swinging input EQ. For techies: It´s inductor based, low and mid band proportional Q bell filters and a shelving HF filter. All bands have 3 switchable frequencies which are optimized for my basses. Finding the good sounding frequencies took 10hrs alone... The output stage is a Melcor DOA driving an API 2623 transformer. Here´s some porn, inside: http://www.directupl...qao7pgu_jpg.htm Outside, the one with the silver frontpanel: http://www.directupl...8mifzzz_jpg.htm No tubes, sorry.... The single G9 PTP Basspre is in the works, too. The layout and most of the drillwork is done, turretboard stuffed... Pictures to follow...
Good work! Looking forward to seeing your ptp G9 when it's done!
