Dingwall

I've never played a Combustion, but look at it this way - Sheldon Dingwall refused to release the first shipment of Combustion NG-2s because the quality wasn't up to his standard. This was probably THE most anticipated basses of the last few years and they didn't go out until he was happy. The Canadian safety net would take any doubt out of it for me. I've owned a Canadian Dingwall and wouldn't hesitate to own anything Sheldon puts his name on - been GASing for a black NG-2 myself the past while. I've never played a B string as good as the one on my Dingwall and the Combustions I've heard online seem to be up there.
2. Owned both Korean and Indonesian Skylines (3 Korean and 2 Indonesian now I think about it!) and couldn't see any difference in the quality from one country of production to the other. My old ltd ed JO4 was my fav by quite some way (traded for an Indonesian 55-02dlx which was also nice). Lakland 5 strings have the best neck shape I've ever tried. I've been GASing for a Korean Skyline Hollowbody for a while after playing one of the older Bartolini equipped ones.
3.
I think i posted some pics of the internals, along with Mark earlier in this thread, although it might have been another thread.
Can't see your pic Dave (could be 'cos I'm using my work pc... Shhhhh!), but discrete's pic is visible and confirms it should be possible.
4. Has anyone carried out any mods yet? I'll be changing the volume/blend/tone for volume/volume/tone if I can! Hopefully just use the current tone control on the stacked pot as the second volume and replace the blend pot (probably a stereo pot with a detent at centre position) with a suitable tone pot. It'll depend on how the whole thing preamp is built though - haven't seen any pics of the preamp as yet. EDIT: a quick Google search reveals that my v/v/t plan will work! Pics of the rear of the control plate are up on a for sale site somewhere!
5. Folded. Just ordered the tobacco burst alder 5 from Thomann. I blame Paul Turner for this! Had sworn off jazz basses until I saw his masterclass in Dublin on Saturday... It'll hardly compare to his AC, but the YouTube videos sound excellent!
6.
Pictures? They are on the first post. Cheers
They've disappeared from the first post
7. ABMs are brilliant amps. So much so I think my walkabout might also fall victim to my serial amp killer abm combo! There's been orange, thunderfunk, aguilar, mesa and a couple of others through my hands in the time I've owned the ABM and it's usurped them all...
8. Maybe if you could get hold of an ACG EQ02 you could install it (or have somebody else install it) in a pedal enclosure? The EQ01 wouldn't be ideal as it has 2 bass stacks, one per pickup, so with a single jack input one would be unused. The EQ02 has global bass and treble filter stacks and was available in single pickup versions - all you'd need is to attach a jack to the preamp's pickup input and you'd be good to go.
9.
Thanks guys. I think I might look for a small cab but use the Streamliner. No point getting more gear when both I don't want to and don't need to. I am one for keeping it simple.
Now there's a contradiction in terms!!! But we know what you mean!
10. Handy, although it might be cleverer if it had speakons like a lot of bass amps these days...
11. Oh thank goodness this is away... My resolve was weakening!
12. Love the tolex on these!
13. Interested in your findings too. I like the cobalt roundwounds and have yet to find a set of flats that have really clicked with me. GHS bright flats have been the best so far.

Octaver
I picked up a Chord OC50 for £20 delivered off here. Great pedal - nails the OC2 sound and seems to be well put together. Mine tracks down to F# on one of my basses and A on the rest of them (which which is still pretty good!)
May have been mine! Great wee pedals. I have the chord version of the odb3 too which I have the Monte Allums mods to go into when I get the chance!
15. +1. Already been said but I'd just use the Genz and Berg you already have if it was me. Hardly classifies as physically huge - same stage footprint as most smaller combos, even if it is tall. And the Genz features one of those magical volume controls I hear so much about nowadays! ;-p

Octaver

The Chord OC-50 (or is it OC-80... can't remember) is a great wee octave. It's a boss octave clone I believe, but has an extra "drive" switch (turns off the -2 octave) which sounds quite synthy. Mine tracked really well down to a sustained F# which surprised me - most give up at A in my experience! Sold it for tuppence... idiot... I have an EHX Octave Multiplexer which is a nice sounding octave on a budget (i think it sounds nicer than the oc2 derivatives myself) but it doesn't track as well. I have the COG T65 too. Again loosely oc2 based but with a +1 octave instead of a -2 and a tone control on the -1 octave similar to the Aguilar Octamizer. It's part of a double effect with a Mastotron-type fuzz, but that's a different price point altogether. Sounds inhuman though! Dirty synthy either with or without the fuzz.
17.
I'm dying to see what the two model P's and the model one that he posted end up in!
Me too. It's a combination I'd thought of trying if I could get hold of a suitable bass to try them in. That and a pair of thunderbuckers in a p bass are on the "to do" list!
18.
It's just waiting for a scratchplate. Peter has gone through three different orders and he's not happy with the colour of any of them so I think he's now making one himself.
From following his exploits for a few years he seems a fussy sort! Not a bad thing really!
19. Bumping this up as I just watched this documentary yesterday. Incredibly inspiring stuff. Actually I put it on while at work and wasn't really paying attention - not even to Abe Laboriel! It was the bass playing and bass sound about 6-7 minutes in that caught my ear (a bit of digging revealed it'a a guy called Rich Moore playing his Wyn with the Mark Lalama Trio - tasty! I now NEED to get some wenge back in my life!). Wound it back to the start and watched the whole thing, followed by all 16 of the "steps to build a bass" series.
20. VVT vs VBT depends on the bass for me. On a jazz it HAS to be vvt - there are sounds in there you just can't get with a balance control in my experience. With a PJ I find it doesn't matter so much - a switch would do instead as I find mixing the P and J doesn't work that well. Talking passive electronics here though. A little way down on this page is what you're looking for anyway: http://www.guitarnucleus.com/wiring.html
21.
I'd agree with this - or perhaps an old Peavey TNT/TKO if you can find one..
+1 if you're after bulletproof I'd try and find a Line6 Studio 110. There was one here for under a ton last week. Great little combos.
22. A few "I'd imagine" type comments, but from bitter experience MAKE SURE YOURSELF! Measure everything twice before buying anything. Not all Fender pickup routes are the same, especially with their 5 string basses - some of their Mexican 4 strings have the same size route for neck and bridge pickups and some have the mounting lug locations in different places for the same size pickup body. Hurrah for standardization!!! Measure twice, cut once!
23.
Yes now that you see it like that it looks nice, you should have seen it when I received it, it looked like it had been fished out the bottom of a pond, the neck had layers of gunk and there was greenish mould all over the bridge and machine heads, I had to soak all the steel work in WD40, and use a toothbrush to remove the growth, and then totally cleaned the neck with wood cleaner, oil and wax, and finally lots of polish to get the body to shine again, the result after a day was rewarding.
Well worth the effort GW! Great looking bass. Always fancied one myself!
