Guess I'm going to be the voice of dissention then and probably need to get my flame resistance shorts on The musicians on the Titanic had to remember over 150 songs, any one of which would be requested in the moment. I know Paul McCartney etc had set lists sellotaped to their instruments for this or that performance, but they still had to remember the lyrics, as did everyone, unless they wanted to be seen reading paper on stage. A singer I worked with recently used an iPad for lyrics. Because the lyrics were just listed in successive paragraphs, the singer went from verse two to three, completely missing the bridge of the song, as it wasn't written on her ipad note. If people are using ipads as short cuts for learning songs properly, then subtle nuances and changes in the song from verse to verse could well be missed. Also, if you're paying attention to the ipad, you're not giving your full attention to the performance of your fellow band members, thereby missing the opportunity to react in time to their performance and cues and in turn, provide cues of your own to them. In the end, is the music of your band a living evolving entity from moment to moment, shaped by the musicians on the stage in that moment, or a collective programme of things to do ? Fire away
All problems with the user, not the tool...

***WITHDRAWN*** Orange Terror Bass 500 - £300

My Orange Terror Bass 500 for sale. Great amp (which I recommend at any given opportunity) but I'm not gigging at all at the minute and I'm not likely to be any time soon. In the interests of full disclosure this has been back to Orange for repair of an intermittent fault before I took ownership, but it hasn't given me a minutes trouble. Punchy and LOUD, but can do valvey clean easily with the gain down and volume up. Will include a pair of 12AT7 valves for gain taming purposes and a Harley Benton 7 band graphic bass eq to combat what some see as the 'one trick pony' nature of the amp - I would add that I've never used it as I find the amp's inherent tone rather excellent. Pics here: http://s38.photobucket.com/user/Bigwan2062/library/Rig%20for%20sale £300 plus shipping. ***WITHDRAWN*** Cab is for sale too, but shipping something that size might be a challenge!

Are these "Classic Vibe" in the same way the James Johnston sig is basically a cv jazz? Never really followed the difference between the cv and vm series'...

Darker, deeper sound? Not a stingray...

Been interested in Farida since I did some repair work and a pickup swap on one of their 70's style jazz basses a few years ago - REALLY good bass for the money, which was peanuts at the time if I recall...
watching with interest....mmm burgundy mist
+1 to that! Really liking the look of these. I'd sworn off jazz basses and am mid clear out, but even still... Very tempting...

Orange Terror Bass - don't knock it til you've tried it! Some may say it's not as flexible, but I personally preferred the available tones when I tried them side by side.

These look lovely... WANT!

First time playing originals. How different is this !!
Bigwan replied to tonybassplayer's topic in General Discussion
I cant see what's to admit, it's a normal thing.
Yes, but a lot of folk would claim full credit is my point, and if it happened to sound like some late 19th/early 20th century composer's work it's by pure chance... -

I came at bass the other way round. Always played in original bands, then a cover band later. Originals are whatever you want to make of them. Just remember to play for the song first and yourself second. There can be a glorious happy medium (Pino is the perfect example). I usually try and create the basis of a line first and then fill in the gaps using (again) Pino's trick of singing the fills (or the whole line) before trying to figure them out on bass. It'll certainly be more fulfilling for you than any cover band! -
Having watched a lot of Ben's videos (he certainly has a unique approach to some things!) I'd love to go to a day like this. Alas I'm VERY far away...
That's pretty much hit the nail on the head as regards monitoring. Generally on small "stages" monitors are for vocals and instruments that are acoustic. The more things you put through a monitor mix the more confusing the mix becomes. The more confusing the mix becomes the less happy the vocalists and anyone else who is currently needing the monitors to be able to hear themselves will be. Plus the average wedge monitor simply isn't designed to take the level of bass most bass players would like to have. On the occasions that I've had to rely 100% on the monitors in order to be able to hear my bass on stage, the only ones I've been really happy with were when the stage and PA were massive and the monitoring system included full-range side-fills.
All true if running at high volumes, but if you run quiet on stage the monitoring requirements drop drastically in my experience. Now I totally get the fact that some folk have no desire to play quietly, but for the purposes of the cover band I played with it was ideal and I had the clearest on-stage sound I'd ever experienced. We weren't using stellar gear either. 3 aux mixes between 4 members from a soundcraft mixer, cheap active monitors (mine was a stagg 12" 100 watt job). I usually just lived with whatever mix one of the guitarists had, but with my little bass combo I could add whatever I wanted of myself. Definitely wouldn't have rattled any fillings out though!
I use a MB & Barefaced super 12 T rig , but I also have a 3K PA with active subs etc I was considering just having something like a MB micro combo & DI from it . mainly because I hate carrying gear around & some of the pubs we play in are very cramped . We have electric drums so I don't have to compete with anyone sound wise . Does anyone else do this ?
My old cover band did exactly this. The e-drums are the key (and an understanding guitarist i.e. no half stacks, or ideally no valve amps of any description - our guitarist used a floor pod). Wouldn't attempt it otherwise or you'd need some seriously good monitoring. With e-drums I found I could get away with a Line6 Studio 110 combo DId and a little powered wedge monitor.
