The 1590B is back on after a bit more thought and some drawing (and some inspirational 1590A builds over pn diystompboxes.com - wow!) but which switches to keep? Thinking of keeping range hi/lo, sweep up/down and band pass/low pass if I can get them all on there somewhere! Unfortunately the fx loop will go too...

Can't comment on the Evo III, but I've been changing back and forth between a first series ABM and an OTB for a while. The OTB sounds very similar set flat to how I have the ABM set up so that's a win for me. If you need more flexibility from the OTB I'd add graphic eq and octave pedals. I do still love my ABM, but the Orange is punchier and much MUCH louder (although whether you'll use the extra or not only you can say). I had contemplated selling my OTB to get something even smaller... but I don't think I can bring myself to do it!

I quite like the look of the TC 250 watt 1x12 combo myself, although between my SWR Workingmans 12 and my ABM 1x10 combos I'm pretty set!
Hi all, I figured this would be the best place to ask this... I spent most of yesterday building a GGG tuned muff and...welll....it doesn't work. I've built 3 pedals before and all have worked first time. LED comes on, but not getting any sound both with the effect on and bypassed. I'm going to have a look at it tonight and see if there's anything obvious, but anyone got any ideas what might cause that to happen? Cheers
From what you describe, since you aren't even getting the bypassed signal out, it sounds like you've either wired your switch or input/output jacks wrong. Other posibility is something accidentally shorted to ground.

They can do clean no problem - They're just very very good at doing dirty too! I use mine for a nice tubey clean sound so the gain is set to about 9pm on the dial (sometimes less). Still LOADS of headroom! I use the factory valves and have no problems with them at all. I don't really agree with them not being flexible - they are what they are. You want more control buy a graphic eq pedal or something.
Thornybank has one which is mint. I've tried it and it's hugely tweakable but £££'s
Yeah the price is one thing (although that seems to be the going rate for the Meatball) but the size is beyond what I think of as acceptable for my pedal board - the big box qtron had to go for the same reason and i think the meatball is bigger again! I think the "meatball into a 1590B" is out of the question after a bit of measuring and drawing (without going to surface mount components!) but I have a BYOC filter I built a few years ago which is in a slightly larger enclosure of a similar format and that might be a possibility while still retaining all 6 pots and a switch or 2. Just have to find out what it is! Investigations continue...
This would be rather impressive! I also agree there would be very little fun in not making it!!!
Haven't done it yet! Obviously lots of the switching options will be hardwired - I think it's a toss up between range and sweep direction as to which stays on the top face, but i'm leaning towards a switch to select between high and low range. I'm not a fan of switches on the side of pedals and really for my use I'll only be after one or 2 sounds. So 6 pots and 1 switch on a 1590B - starting to realise how mad that sounds!!! Further trimming may be required, but I'll decide once I've the circuit built what's staying...
-
Looking at the mcmeat layout it should be possible to split the circuit over 2 smaller sandwiched boards to keep it to a smaller footprint. It'll be a REALLY tight fit in a 1590B... Probably have to use those 9mm alpha pots. We'll see. I have some perf board, a 1590B and 1590BB at home somewhere so I'll maybe have a go at laying it out to fit in the smaller one. Really it's not a big issue - I'm replacing a big box qtron after all - I've seen smaller cars in Japan...
Excellent, let me know how you get on, I shall do likewise! I'm almost certainly going to hardwire a Muff into the FX loop on mine on a toggle rather than have an external loop, but I like the buffered bypass idea too so will be interested to see that! I've got the Madbean octaver on my board, it's ace. I've not found much need for two octaves down, but you can get some great tones by balancing 1 down, clean and 1 up. Madbean are going to do an octave down that will fit in a 1590A soon as well, that will be a must have. That would be the one i'd want housed in with the Meatball, purely for space within the box - the Madbean Pearl clone is a big board, needs a 1590BB on it's own!
I'm bidding on the original Pearl Octaver on ebay at the mo and if that goes south I'm thinking a mad bean lowrider might be a fun project
Just get a 3 Leaf Audio GR2 It is effectively a Meatball without the bad sounds!
Yeah but where's the fun in that! Admittedly some people don't like the smell of solder, or the risk of burning their fingers a little...

No it's not marketing (BTW the 12 refers to the series heater voltage, not plate voltage). Some of these pedals use 12v AC adapters for a reason - they have internal transformers to step this 12v up to over 200v so the valves are running at a more normal plate voltage. Having said that others do run their valves 'starved', but there's nothing wrong with that, just sounds a little different!

With my Qtron leaving the building today I'm looking at building a McMeat (Meatball clone) at the minute, but simplifying a lot of the switching options that i know i won't use which is why i'm not going the PCB route. Building on perfboard to start with. I'd like to make it super small (1590B size) but I may have to go to the 1590BB instead. I haven't decided whether I want to keep the fx loop yet, which will have a big effect on enclosure size - if I keep it it will be buffered bypass so I can use the fx in the loop without the envelope - all sounds very Groove Regulator doesn't it!
There used to be loads of threads about trolleys, but I guess that all these lightweight cabs have put paid to that. I have a Lidl one (Aldi did the same thing as well), and they used to be flagged up quite often when they came on sale. Load weight of 100Kg. Some people used to recommend a fishing trolley that Argos do as well. Personally I like something that has a load capacity that's at least twice the weight you need to carry and doesn't have folding wheels. If you're going to be taking it over rough surfaces or bumping up and down kerbs it can take a toll on the trolley. Edit: This one looks very similar to the Lidl /Aldi ones.
+1 to this. I got the same trolley recently and it's a good job. Don't forget bungees though! Also be careful when buying this style of trolley as some have plastic axle brackets which aren't up to the job and fracture quite easily.

Hartke VXL Attack DI pedal Official blurb says: "Hartke's VXL Bass Attack Pedal is a tone-shaping pre-amp that doubles as a direct box, featuring the famous Hartke Shape Circuitry. The two-button style stomp box has a three band EQ for adjustments of Bass, Treble, and Bright controls, plus a Harmonic control that emulates the warmth and drive of a tube so well that you'll never want to turn it off. The Hartke Bass Attack Pedal gives you the ability to finally get the sound you want, and everything in between" Some people think of it as the poor cousin to the Sansamp Bass Driver DI. All I know is that it sounds good and has served me well, but I'm low on pedalboard space and have recently acquired an MXR M80 DI in a trade so this has to go. Some great online reviews and some nice videos on YouTube. £40 inc UK postage. SOLD!!!! EHX Qtron (big box) Control info here: http://www.analogman.com/q-tron.htm This pedal has convinced me I need an envelope filter in my life, but alas my pedalboard won't handle the size of this one (see pic!). This came to me a little battered but a good clean of the controls has unleashed the beast - fantastic funky sounds! The slide switches on the top edge don't have a very positive action, but work 100% and other than that it feels tip top in use. Includes 24v uk adapter and wooden box. £50 inc UK postage. SOLD!!! Only trades I'm interested in would be for a smaller envelope filter - MXR M82 or one of the 3 Leaf Audio ones for preference (obviously with funds your way for either).
HI bud, can i intrest you in a trade with this.: http://basschat.co.u...uto-q-auto-wah/
Sorry mate, had one before and it didn't float my boat.
would you be interested in a fender sub lime fuzz
Sorry Marty I have a Mammoth clone build planned and that'll be all the fuzz I need. Thanks for the offers guys. Keep em coming!

Haven't built much in a while (not actually completed anything properly since I finished the Dumble clone valve amp build for my wee brother - a few half finished attempts lying around though!) but in the planning stages for a couple of circuits. I'm putting together my first proper pedal board so all these little projects are related. First up is an LT1054-based step-up supply for my recently acquired big box qtron. Hoping it'll produce close enough to the required 24v from my 9v supply! If not I'll use it as a doubler for when I get round to building a Catalinbread SFT/Madbean Faultline. Also looking at building a little mixer to mix some clean in with the effected qtron output - notice I didn't say blend. I want separate clean and effect volumes as per the MXR BEF. May include active bass and treble controls for the 'clean' side and a phase inverter of course. I may build all this inside the qtron box - it's not like there isn't enough room! Next up will be a Mammoth fuzz clone. More long term is a Trace V-type based valve pedal running from an AC wall wart with a step up toroidal transformer. Goodness knows when I'll get the time...

I'd be looking at finding a nice Celinder if I were you - if my house burnt down today and I had to replace my collection with one four string that's what I'd go for. Dingwall for a 5 string though...

Hi all, Just bought this pedal from our own Tayste_2000 recently, but it's not really the sound I'm after. Looking for trades of envelope filters (MXR BEF or WHY) or perhaps a VT bass. Hit me with what you've got, but I'm sorted with an octaver and not really a chorus/flange/verb kind of guy. Pedal looks brand new like this: Boxed with velcro attached. People who like this kind of fuzz rate it as a rather excellent big muff clone, with the added flexibility of a mid control and 3-way voicing switch. Trip Wamsley has a nice review vid on youtube. Cheers Ian
Well, I guess I'm looking for 'the right sort of curve'.
Pity - they meet every other requirement, and are damn lovely to play too... How about Dingwall? My latest squeeze is an Afterburner 5 - it is glorious and definitely not retro looking!

There's probably nothing special about how a TC cab reacts, except that they KNOW EXACTLY how their own cabs react and can guarantee that they will not interact to produce a total impedance that's below what the amp is designed to accept. Can't say the same for a random combination of cabs... Having said that it'd probably be ok to mix and match
