Don't fall for the 'If I have a B I might as well have a C too' argument. For me that was a step too far and as a result I have a very nice ornamental Shuker 6 hanging on my wall. Just can't make the transition at all. OK for a little blast now and again, but I wouldn't ever dream of gigging with it! If you need a 6 string you wouldn't think like that, you'd just need it, full stop. Bongo HHs are great sounding basses. I've owned both 4 and 5 strings (as with all MM basses I can't get along with the neck shape and I've tried on 4 different occasions) and if I could get one with the same shape neck as my J or P bass then I'd probably have it. The colour thing is down to you - I've never bought a bass based on colour, my thinking being that I won't notice the colour when I'm playing it, and I don't spend much time admiring it when I'm not playing it. That being said there are colours I wouldn't buy...

This may just be a passing phase (and goodness knows I have enough o those), but I'm considering getting rid of most of my amps and cabs and going with a Sansamp VT bass and wired in-ears and putting together a half decent PA. I don't really want to play uncontrollable volume wars any more, and according to my wife my hearing is getting pretty bad (although I think she mumbles to be honest)! I have the 'big rig' (Terror Bass and Tech Soundsystems 4x12) for when I occasionally have to compete with 2 guitarists with half stacks in the rock/metal band I play with sometimes. Last time I played with these guys I couldn't get my rig to the rehearsal space and ended up using a Laney 1x15 combo. I couldn't hear myself (apparently 300 watts), but the rest of the guys didn't even notice the change of gear... The small rig (Terror Bass/Ashdown Combo and Aguilar 1x12) gets quite a bit more use, but I've recently acquired an Ashdown LB30/LB212 stack which could do the job there and I wouldn't want to go much louder than that. And a PA could be VERY handy for my current little cover band (which is currently begging and borrowing PA gear) and anything else I want to put together in future - thinking of a DIY BFM SLA Pro/Titan39 rig with a powered mixer and separate sub amp. My thinking being if I needed more of a bass rig than the Ashdown setup then I could take one side of the PA along instead... Someone tell me I'm mad...

True bypass looper. Just a separate box with a switch...

What is the most expensive bass rig money can buy?
Bigwan replied to Truckstop's topic in Amps and Cabs
Anthony Ackson uses the Meyer Sound CQ-1 powered full range speaker (1x15 + 4" compression horn) - $8450... EACH!!! -
Try an Orange Terror Bass with your current cab (or with cab and speaker in your combo if possible) just to be sure it's the cabs that are the problem. I'm not a fan of TE stuff, but never found them to be particularly quiet. I was absolutely blown away with the volume on tap with the Orange (and the guitarist and drummer had to leave the room when I cranked it up - they felt physically sick) although I'm using a VERY efficient Tech Soundsystems 4x12...

Without doubt I'd go for a good envelope filter. I've been buying lots of effects lately and the envelope filter is the one I'm having the most fun with (I ended up with an EHX Qtron, the big one - £50 off ebay). Octave pedals are good, but I know at 16 I wouldn't have enjoyed one as it involves too much modification of my technique - have to play cleaner and not use chords. Another option would be something like the soundblox multiwave bass distortion. Distortion and fuzz galore and some of the more wacky settings sound very synthy which could be useful for his funk band. Good luck and let us know how you get on!

Just received an MXR Octave pedal from Pablo. Great transaction and super fast delivery! Deal with confidence!

East J-Retro preamp *SOLD*

Hi all, I have for sale my John East J-retro. This one has a mixed black and chrome knob set (originally taken from my Lakland JO where it was factory fitted). It's been well used and the control plate is a little scratched from the previous owner's inability to locate the jack plug! The preamp's been back to Mr. East recently for a once over. He's replaced a few components and proclaimed all is well. I've noticed in the past that the active/passive switch can be a little troublesome if it's been sitting in the one position for a long time, but this never bothered me as I always used it in active mode when it was fitted (which it hasn't been in quite a while). A quick squirt of switch cleaner has always worked when this has been a problem, but in light of this the price has been adjusted accordingly. It's a great sounding preamp, but I'm mostly an all passive guy now. £SOLD SOLD SOLD PLEASE NOTE: This is one of the earliest versions of this pre and as such soldering is required - no screw terminals unfortunately! Cheers Ian

Another Orange Terror fan here. Recently considered trading for something 'cleaner' since I'm working on a pedalboard that has plenty of dirt onboard... but it just sounds SO good! If I need clean I can run a preamp into the effects return instead - this little monster isn't going anywhere! Cab-wise I love the sound and weight of my tech soundsystems 4x12 cab, but it's a slightly awkward size (too wide to walk through a door using both handles)... But a recently acquired folding hand truck has taken care of that!

I've just recently bought Dave's Ashdown LB30 and a smoother transaction you will never have! Cheers Dave!

Recently bought Gareth's LB 2x12 cab. Gareth went to great lengths to have the cab sufficiently packed to be shipped over the Irish sea. An all round good chap!

Going back to a simple old school set up.

Funny I've been doing this (simple setup - bog standard P-bass, amp, cab) for a while and am now heading the other direction with a fancy 5 string, collection of pedals, etc. I still have the simple setup for when I'd rather do that though. The (somewhat depressing) question is, will anyone in the audience notice the difference? I think we all know the answer to that... -

Just fell in love with my Farida P bass after new strings
Bigwan replied to daz's topic in Bass Guitars
I had a Farida Jazz (maple neck with black blocks) with me for some repair work a while back and to fit a set of Wizards to. Brilliant bass for that sort of money it has to be said. -
Want A 5 String Bass But Which?
Bigwan replied to Gordon Thudmaster May's topic in General Discussion
What's your budget so we can make more accurate suggestions? Going on spacing alone I'd say either an Ernie Ball Stingray 5 (or the cheaper Sterling 35 equivalent - you might still be able to find a now discontinued but cheaper still Ernie Ball Sub5) or perhaps a Sandberg, but you're into heft money for some of those. There are dozens of options with narrower than 19mm string spacing. I recently sold a Lakland 55-01 (19mm) and have a Dingwall Afterburner now (18mm) and I'm having some trouble with the narrower spacing, but I'm persevering! Different strokes, etc. -
Good choice my man. Have one and it's going nowhere! Mine was one of the very earliest ones with the grill cloth and celestion speaker (when the Ashdown ABMs were marked as 200 and 400 watts before they magically upgraded them to 300 and 500 watts without changing the amp designs at all ). I remember speaking to the guys at the bass center and they couldn't understand why the 1x10 combo was discontinued. I keep plying with the idea of upgrading the celestion speaker in mine but it only gets used in the house at the minute so there's not much point.
