If they're the only 2 choices it'd be the 'ray for me too. I've never played a 'modern' Warwick that I've liked enough to buy (none of them are anywhere close to the mid-90's models IMHO), whereas with the MM5 - you always know what you're going to get. They are consistently great! They drop a fair bit in the s/h market BECAUSE they're so popular, so there's always quite a few of them for sale. I'd have another MM5 tomorrow if it weren't for the string spacing. As it is I prefer my Lakland 5501 - ergonomics are better for me is all... Consider going for a different colour combo s/h though - think about what you're paying the extra for. It's a colour for goodness sake! I've had a MM5 and Bongo5 in my time btw...

SOLD! Badass II Bridge
Bigwan posted a topic in Accessories & Other Musically Related Items For Sale
I have a badass 2 bridge in nickel (looks like chrome to me but was sold to me as nickel - didn't bother me either way!). No mounting screws and the saddles are grooved, but quite shallow, probably fine for all but the heaviest players. The bass this was destined for is long gone. £40 seems to be the going rate for these. I'll include shipping at that. Paypal preferred. -
Alan (niceguyhomer) isn't overly sure himself, other than they were installed for series/parallel operation and I intended to do the same so didn't ask too many questions when I bought them from Tony. The pickups themselves don't have any markings to distinguish which they are either, although they've come to me wired in series. I'll have to be honest and say I haven't a clue which they are

Going by this from the Nordstrand website: All dual coils and humbuckers except Music Man replacement - for series: black = hot, green plus bare = ground, red and white together and taped off. For parallel: black and red = hot, green, white, and bare = ground. Black and white are the bridge coil and red and green are the neck coil. the pickups are currently wired for series operation, but since they came from niceguyhomer's Shuker with series/parallel switches fitted they are suitable for wiring in parallel too. Not sure if that answers your question I'm afraid. I'd intented to fit them with series/parallel switched myself, for max tonal variation. I'll PM niceguyhomer and get back to you...

I bought these here a couple of months back for my Lakland 55-01, but having used the bass quite a bit recently I'm happy enough with the standard Barts. These look brand new, but have been used (although not by me - I think they originally belonged to niceguyhomer and came to me via sshorepunk who didn't use them as they were the wrong string spacing for him). Dual coil p/ups, made by Nordstrand, very highly rated and around £260 / pair -ish! From Nordstrand:- "This is a modern design dual coil humbucking pickup. Pickups like these are usually found on very high end basses. They use Alnico V magnets and the traditional bi-pole layout with two poles per string. It's almost like two Jazz Bass® style pickups in one cover. These pickups are available in two different versions. One set is designed to be wired in parallel, and the other in series. The reason we do this is that a pickup that is made to sound good wired parallel will usually be too hot and dark sounding if wires in series. So, we put less wire on a series dual coil than a parallel dual coil. In general, a pickup wired in series will have a fuller and fatter midrange with a subdued high end than a pickup wired in parallel, which will typically have more highs and a deeper low end with a cleaner midrange. Series pickups also have more output than parallel pickups. Parallel pickups are generally a better choice for a split-able installation, as there will not be the gain loss associated with series pickups. These pickups are available only in black plastic covers with exposed pole pieces. These are a direct replacement for Bartolini BC, P2, P4 soapbar size pickups, and are also available for EMG 35/40/45 sized pickups." These are Bartolini P2 replacements (size is 4.25" x 1.25"), suitable for 19mm string spacing @ bridge. £100 plus postage takes these (which is what I paid). I would keep them but I'm trying to build up my mac/studio fund at the minute! Cheers Ian

Since I don't have kids (yet) I'd want most of my gear to go to my brother - he's one of those gits who can pick up anything and play it! I've actually talked with the wife about this, but the collection has expanded a bit since then so maybe have another wee chat about it. Must get a will done too, now we're legally wed and all...

50 watts is still FAR too much. A 50 watt amp is not half as loud as a 100 watt amp. A 10 watt amp is half as loud as a 100 watt amp (all other factors being equal, like using the same cab, etc).

If money were no object, what bass would you have?
Bigwan replied to Sarah5string's topic in General Discussion
There are many basses I've lusted after over the years. Luckily I'm at a point where there are very few I actually want any more - my current harem keep me pretty happy. I'd have to say if I had to choose it'd be a nice vintage P would fit with my current tastes. Would have to be sunburst, rosewood, tort, well used. A player, not a museum piece. '64 ish I would think. Being relatively bass-GAS free leaves plenty of room for amp-GAS. I' having trouble resisting the new offerings from orange - a bass terror and one of those isobaric 2x12 cabs would be nice! -
Just bought an 08 precision from Jon. Bass was as described, comms were excellent and delivery speedy. Deal with confidence. Another great basschat transaction!

I've played with half stacks and hard hitting drummers with loud drums (most drummers don't know how to play soft, or dynamically in my experience). That way usually ends up sounding like a dirge with everyone fighting to hear themselves, and possibly damaging their hearing in the process. The best 'sounding' band I've been in stuck to quiet on stage, loud out front and it was a joy I'd never before experienced - being able to hear everything so clearly (although sometimes it was a curse - especially with our singer's dodgy voice! Was able to hear every bum note!). Drummer wasn't that hard a hitter though... he also moved all electronic while I was in the band. Another revelation! Next rig purchase for me is a set of in-ear monitors. If it were me in your band I'd try to talk the guitarists into smaller valve amps at least. There's no need for 100 watt valve amps on stages smaller than stadium size. I'd have to agree that carrying 4k of PA and using backline like that is a nonsense...

They did heavy with the Musicman range of amps and cabs (too heavy according to some - that was the only criticism I've seen levelled at the MM cabs). They also did heavy with the first Markbass range.
# Berg IP310 with pres, sounded great but not loud enough for me.
Tilt!

I injured my neck lifting bass cabs a couple of years ago - nothing serious, physio and rest sorted it. I seriously considered going with a small combo as a monitor for the band and decent in-ear monitors for me. Only problem with that is having a PA up to the task. I've since given up my cover band so it never transpired, but if I was to start again (which I'm considering) an in-ear monitor system would be my first purchase.
