Bring your Bongo 5HH to Liverpool on the ferry and I'll meet you there with the Mesa swaps
Tempted, but have already agreed a trade for a Bongo 4HH (identical finish and everything) with my learned colleague in Troon... that way I still have some mighty Bongo action! ...although if someone would buy my cab I'd be over to trade some cash for it!
2. God I wish I was closer. I'd have this off you in a shot! Shipping would be stupid money me thinks...
3. Great basses for the money these. Have an MAB 20/5 and an MAB40 (defretted).
4. If my band hadn't just decided to call it a day at the end ofthe year I might have been raiding the wedding fund for this...
5. I played one on my last visit to Guitarguitar in Glasgow. Other than the Sadowsky on the wall it was the best bass in the place. Beat the stingrays in the place into a very poor 2nd... 5 string sounded great too but tight string spacing.
6. Waiting patiently for your Epi 3x10 Gareth... you're bound to be wanting a change soon!
7.
firstly make sure you need a 5
That's also a pretty valid point. I only played 4 string for about 3 months before switching over to 5 string, where I stayed pretty permanently for about 7 years. It's taken me a long time to realise that I don't NEED a 5 string for anything I do. The real kicker is, no matter what 4 string I play, I always feel more comfortable on a 5 string... using the B as a thumbrest is all I really do!
8.
For that price I'd go with an Ibanez ATK 305...very, very good bass for the money, well built and good tone, similar to a Stingray with and also to a P bass on steroids depending on the pickup selector position.
Forgot about that one! Also an excellent suggestion, but I'd have to class it along with the 'ray. Good if you have small hands. Pretty tight string spacing for a 5 string. An excellent bass for the money though.
9.
My first 5 string was a Stingray. In my view it was the best bass that was at the bottom of my price and quality range, but that was before the days of Lakland. If I was doing it again I'd start by trying either a 55-01, 55-02 or JO5 Skyline. These are just miles ahead of anything that I was looking at 15 years ago.
In total agreement with my learn-ed colleague on this one. A big thing to think about is string spacing and neck shape. My first decent 5 string was, as with chris_b, a 'ray. However I bought it without playing one first and regretted it almost immediately. The neck was too narrow/string spacing was too tight for my hands (although other than that it was damn good!). The Lakland 5 string neck is awesome, and I'd put my 55-01 head and shoulders above any 5 string I've played under a grand and a half. Probably the best deal close to your budget would be a s/h G&L Tribute 5 string I should think, although I've never played one myself. Play as many as you can before deciding what you want. It'll give you some time to save a bit more too!
10.
The close up pics are great but another one that shows the bass in it's entirety might help sell it for you. I know I'm curious to see it.
I was going to suggest the same thing. A pic of the headstock would be good too.
11. That is a beautiful looking bass. Looks to be great quality. I've never heard of that luthier, but then there are so many small, independent luthiers in Germany that's not really a surprise!
12. Just as an aside chaps does anyone have a Bongo 4HH they'd be interested in trading for a 5HH (same finish as the OP's 4HH)? Give me a shout.
13. Just wondering if you'd be interested in selling it without the J-retro fitted?
14.
PLUGGED! http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=50656 £100 with pickup upgrade.
You'll look for a long time before you find a better bass for your money than that. I'm not associated with the seller by the way, but I've played a few Yamaha's in my time and I've NEVER laid hands on a duff one. I don't agree that you should buy the cheapest you can because you're a beginner. The way I look at it is if you buy the cheapest p.o.s. you can get new then it's worth bugger-all second hand if you decide bass isn't for you. If it's the cheapest you can get then it's also, more than likely, going to play like a dog. There's no quicker way of putting someone off playing an instrument in my opinion. Always buy your first bass second hand - less depreciation that way. Also I wouldn't recommend BC Rich to anybody, but that's just me and this is the most important point. One man's meat is another man's poison. It's all personal opinions and personal preferences. You have to make up your own mind what suits YOU best. IMHO, YMMV, etc. etc.
15.
If you haven't had the pleasure of dealing with Steve then he is a top chap.
I don't doubt it! I need to see pics though!!! Honestly, I haven't been checking this thread 4 times a day for pics... really I haven't... no really...
16. Why not just convert it to passive? The pickups are the same. Should be a simple job for anyone who knows how to wield a soldering iron.
17. Have you any better pics Steve? Those ACs must really be doing a job on you!
18. Nice! Not a big fan of the stripes, but I think I could probably live with it - wouldn't really notice it when I'm playing anyway!
19. That's a pretty special setup! Nice!
20. This may have come with the BAII from the factory... I'm becoming P-curious again. How much would you be after?
21. I've said this before a couple of times here. The Scarbee Celinder is, without a shadow of a doubt, the best bass I've ever layed hands on. I'll have my own Celinder one day...
22. I'll refer you to the comment I made on Marcus's Sadowsky sale thread the other day: "Not another bloody Sadowsky... this GAS has me blown up like a balloon! Wish I had £xxxx right now..." Seems to fit this thread too! Good luck with the sale mate!
23. Hi Guys, I've eventually come to the realisation that I'm unlikely to use this cab in the forseeable future - my cover band gigs DI'd to the PA (I'm using a Line6 studio 110 for that! 12" cube!) and my defunct/currently reforming metal band don't play big enough gigs. This is the finest bass cab I've ever played through and beats the 8x10 cabs I've used into the middle of next week. It's not too big (small enough to fit in a Ka with the back seats down!) and doesn't need much power to push it to gigging levels. Best of all, it weighs very little for its size - weighs just 15lbs more than my aguilar 1x12 cab! I can lift this thing with 1 hand and have been able to lift it over my head when needed (although that's never advisable with any cab if it can be avoided!). This style of cab is no longer made and the current TecAmp equivalent is (gulp) £1339. The cab is AS NEW. Only possible downside is that it is 8ohms, but with a cab as sensitive as this it's not much of a downside! More info here: http://www.tech-soundsystems.com/eng/image...r/12er_full.jpg Trade-wise I'm looking for 1 or 2 smaller, high-end cabs. Consider a p/ex for an Aguilar GS112, but ideally 2 Aguilar DB112s in black (that's a long shot!). Hit me with what you've got though. Money-wise I'd be after £600 shipped (I'm in Northern Ireland - I'd like £550 for the cab plus shipping so if the shipping is cheaper than £50 then I'll take the difference off, if it's more I'll absorb the difference). Any questions just ask! Cheers Ian
