  1. Different strokes for different folks. If Doug released the Vintage Ultra with the tone control from the Darkglass amp I MIGHT be interested...
  2. Meh, we've heard that before...
  3. Reasonable deal I think... https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Ashdown-ABM-BP1510-Bass-Guitar-Speaker-Cabinet-1x15-2x10-HF-Horn/223000003312?hash=item33ebd602f0%3Ag%3AblAAAOSw1nRbEFNG&_sacat=0&_nkw=ashdown&_from=R40&rt=nc&_trksid=p2380057.m570.l1313.TR12.TRC2.A0.H0.Xashdown.TRS0
  4. You'll pick up an Ashdown ABM combo for not much more than that if you look around. A vastly superior amp in every way, IMHO.
  5. Slightly unexpected PPI windfall... Pay off CC or go nuts... What to do?

Pay off the card. The feeling of a cleared debt is wonderful, whereas buyer's remorse on a debt-fuelled purchase is a hideous thing.

  6. Thomann has the full fat variety in stock. Don't see anything but the custom variety online in the UK at the minute...
  7. Tempted... But her indoors would be a little upset I think...
  8. I used to have a Laney DB300H head. Only Laney product I've ever owned. It wasn't bad, just big and heavy, although that impression may be tainted by the other half of the rig - a Peavey TX810... Traded both against my Ashdown 1x10 ABM combo about 16 0r 17 years ago and haven't looked back! My only subsequent contact with Laney gear was a 1x15 combo a guy brought along to rehearsals for the band I was in the process of leaving. It looked pretty nice, like a trimmed down version of the head I'd owned, but it sounded totally gutless! I had my rig in the corner of the room (Orange Terror bass, Tecamp 412) and the Laney was shuffled back into the guy's car in favour of mine which was louder ticking over than his was giving it full welly... Current Nexus micro head looks very interesting, but I imagine the subsequent resale value would put a lot of potential buyers right off.
  9. Yes, and it's sods law that there will ALWAYS be screw-uppage at some point... usually at the most inconvenient moment possible!
  10. Your mate drums for Tesseract doesn't he? From about 15 or 16 minutes in with the rather awesome Amos....
  11. Cool! I owned one of these briefly - the heavily modded one that did the rounds here a number of years back with the funky Villex pickup and tone controls. Wasn't for me at the time. EDIT: GAS has struck... bloody hell, that's P GAS twice this week!!! First the Fender American Original 50's, now this!
  12. You'll regret selling the combo. Mine is one of the only pieces of gear I've ever owned that I would NEVER sell.
  13. Ocean turquoise with matching headstock... Parchment pickguard...
  14. I like the thunderbird pickup idea! It's one I've been thinking about myself for some time. Need no excuse to post this pic again! If it were me I'd put the pickups in the classic T-bird locations though (as per Pino's T-bird/Fender for The Who that @rubis mentioned).
  15. Nice! What's the nut width on these Si? I owned the 5 string version for a while and it was lovely...
  16. Been tempted by a double 'bucker P myself, although more along the lines demonstrated by this fine looking Lull:
  17. Played a Fender Original 50s Precision yesterday in Guitarguitar Glasgow... VERY impressed...

I'd be more interested in the Original 60s to be honest, but they didn't have one to try in GG... I intentionally stayed away from the CS stuff they had!!!

Those rolled edges are exactly what you get on proper vintage - it's just part of the effect

It was my first bass, albeit back in the late 80s when they were "made in Japan" models. It got sold off years ago and I decided to get a replacement once I was back on my feet, opting for another Japanese Fender 50s P-bass. Interestingly the Japanese models now (or mine at least) don't have that wide neck, opting for a more conventional C shape. I did like the old neck but mine is still pretty cool.

  18. As mentioned before, meths. I just half fill a suitably sized plastic sweety tub (mine is an old Haribo box - 2 liter ice cream tub would probably work), coil the strings up and drop them in. Leave them overnight, hang them up until dry and refit.
  19. One of the best scenes in all of comedy!
  20. My Kala as it came from the factory had an issue with the pickup not picking up the E string. The piezo pickup is glued (actually looks like black epoxy) to the bottom of the saddle instead of lying on the bottom of the saddle channel. Kala's "fix" was to loosen the strings and tilt the bridge saddle towards the tail of the bass, which made the already shitty intonation even shittier. To actually play this thing anywhere near in tune I've had to experiment with changing strings - 4th set were best, the ones that came off the HB Uke. Other than sharp fret ends (it's an HB Deko after all) the HB was perfect out of the box. Adding Pyramid tape wounds was the icing on the cake.
  21. There can't be much money in it or somebody would have done it by now...
  22. Economy of scale has to play a part I would imagine... You can get a 5w all valve guitar amp for under a ton because guitarists are, as we all know, ten a penny... Something I'd like to explore beyond the initial 5 minutes I've given it, is my Harley Benton 5 watt combo (the one that looks suspiciously like the Epiphone Valve Jr). I bet it'd sound better than OK into a bass extension cab like my barefaced Two10 with the combo's internal speaker bypassed. It's a sweet sounding little amp for guitar, especially with a nice strat.
  23. Ah yes. So it was. Don't remember Decimax at all then!
