I can relate to all of the problems above. Love Trace, still got a 1 x 15 combo and 2 x 10, had a V8 and sold it due to weight! Replaced it with EPI 4 x 10 and 1x 15 plus Markbass amp, this gives me lightweight and flexibility but not the sound I was after. After an exchange of views on here I went down the route of an external active pre-amp between the bass and amp, and first time out yesterday I had my sound back! still got to try it out at a couple move venues, but based on that I would say that Alex's intial thoughts were right, you appear to need a hotter signal to drive the lightweight gear to get the good old TE sound.
Thanks, anyone on Basschat selling one?
Managed to get one off Basschater, tried it on Sunday and it sounds nice with the 55P thanks -
Be warned - those things easily turn into feedback generators. It's very easy to get carried away with having your very own gain control right there next to you.
Sorted, I use them as side fills making sure they are just out of reach!

Check out the TC Helicon Voice Solo, just started using this and it is very good. So much so that I will be buying another one using them as side fills and not bother with wedges at all in small venues.

It hurts my back just looking at the pictures, but boy do I miss my V8! sorry guys but the Mark Bass just does not cut the mustard like a V8!
+1 Hi Steve, you would make a huge difference to your sound with a pre amp, and the Sadowsky is one of the best.
Thanks, anyone on Basschat selling one? -

Lots of good info here, thanks So does anyone make an active sc P pickup? currently I have a Jason Loller sc in the 55P, this does have better mids than most, however it lacks the punch. I might give an MRX M-80 a try, anyone selling one at the moment? -
Played last Friday and started the set off with my 1979 P with Active EMG's. The sound of this bass is magic! however it weighs a lot and I have a bad back. After about 10 numbers I had to change to my 55P which is much lighter and the pain went away. So the question is, does someone make a decent pedal that will make my Pasive Bass sound like an Actice Bass with EMG's? As the cavity is small on the 55P it would be difficult to put in a pre-amp, also I use a 59P and do not intend modifying it.
Indeed! Got me thinking about a project again now! BTW what are the Fender '59 RI Precisions like? Have fancied one but never been able to try one! Cheers, Jon.
The Custom Shop 59 is a great bass, I tend to use it for the first half of the set and the Black 79 for the second half. It is a nice weight, not too heavy and the neck is fast and low.
If you don't mind me asking - what did it cost "all in" for this project (i.e. the bass, all the work & parts/paint) It's a great bass you've ended up with and I'm well impressed. Cheers, Jon
It was less than £1k, however I did work with Joe White on this as a project so would expect it to have cost a bit more without his generosity. You have to take into consideration that this is now a custom built Bass with hand wound pickups, all cloth wireing, CTS pots, Nitro finish body and neck which has been modified, refinished and then sypathetically aged. A Fender Custom shop one, (if they made one) would be in excess of £2.7k.
That is stunning and I want one!
Thanks, had my 2nd outing with it on Sat at a reasonable size Beer Festival. Going through a Trace stack and into the PA it sounded good, I took my number 1 Black 79 P just in case but did not need to use it.

The day turned out to be a good one! Thank you to all the great Basschaters that played, it was good to see that the vintage Trace could still do the business, looking forward to next Sat at Loxwood.
Basschatters playing with 4 of the 5 bands at Broadbridge Heath Beer Festival yesterday, near Horsham, Sussex. Flying Visit with Craigonbass / Fender Jazz Whatever with Sixshooter / recently rebuilt blue '55-alike Fender Precision Six Miles Away with Maxcat / Bongo 4 / Stagg EUB Amity with obbm / MM StRay 5 everybody played though sixshooters' vintage Trace rig. Fortunately the weather was kind and a good crowd turned up to help raise money for Shelley Primary School. There's a similar event next Saturday at the famous Loxwood Beer Festival with sixshooter and myself playing with our respective bands. We'll be joined by Stingrayfan and his band Wag The Dog. Starts around lunch time and goes on until 11.00pm. Please all pray for fine weather again.

Nice job - looks great! I'm generally a fan of butterscotch Fenders - but that tone looked well odd - good colour choice. I'm not sure about the whole relicing thing, but it looks like you have done a pretty tasteful job on the brightwork - are you going to do anything else? btw, is it a nitro or poly finish?
Thanks Johnny, it is thin nitro and it will start to craze very soon, the neck has already started to go with the help of the sun, and the body colour is changing to a greenish hue. All electrics have been replaced, Jason Loller pickups are installed. the neck will be aged a little more on the back, but that will be with wear as I intend to use this quite a bit. The great thing about the relic thing is that it does not matter if it gets a bit of damage in use, as opposed to my fantastic Modulus which has one scatch on caused by a drum part while playing, I could have cried for a week when it happened!
have you reliced the chromewear? if so what did you use
Yes, all chrome reliced, not sure of the name of the liquid but it had a warning label on it and it eat's chrome! The neck is now starting to craze nicely after a few days in the sun....

Ha Ha! that made me laff. Wonder if he would take £2k for it?
That looks like a very tasteful change. I could never understand why the butterscotch MIJ version is such an awful plastic looking colour (while the sunbursts I've seen have been pretty good)
Thanks I am very happy with the outcome, I agree with you with regard to the butterscotch, it has very little going for it in the looks department. Here is my little project, the doner came from a Basschat member, looks a little different now! Started life like this:- And finished up like this:- If you are interested I will post more pictures of the change. Work carried out by Joe White with a helping hand from me!

I have got one as well near Aldershot if you want to have a play. It may have flats on it, so long since I used it I cannot remember.
They are, but.. I'm just about to change out a set of La Bellas after seven years. How many sets of rounds would I have been through in that time?
Spot on there! and also they are fret frendly so if you are a regular player your frets will last longer....
Sorry for the misunderstanding.. I was asking 'SixShooter' how much he paid for the re-finish on his bass. Just wondering what a decent paintjob costs. I would think that if you have the bass restored properly and to original spec, that you wouldn't devalue it. I have restored many motorcycles over the years and it is only bad work that causes a drop in value. If done well, who would know it has been restored?
It was in the couple of hundread area, the Bass when I got it was stripped to the wood so if I sold it in future there would be 2 choices, a great sympathetic refin or strip it back to the wood again. Either way the only loss is the potential cost of the spray. On the plus side, it would be very difficult for anyone to tell that this is not the original finish, all paint and finishers used are as near to the original as possible, the relic work has been done to preserve all original marks in the wood including the wear and tear from 50 years of playing. No way do I regret having this done, this Bass is awsome, took it to a Bass bash last year in Guildford and gave a few people a chance to have a play of it, it there are any of them reading this chip in with your take on this refin...

It's nice to see all you young players finally getting to grips with the beauty of Flats! What happened to tapewound? can you still get them? The only problem is that now when I go to buy flats instead of the person in the shop saying sorry we have not got any in stock, no one uses them, he now says sorry we don't have any in stock because we have sold out!
