Fretless with narrow string spacing - what's out there?
bassjamm replied to topo morto's topic in Bass Guitars
I can give a thumbs up for the Ibanez GWB35. Really awesome bass for the money both in quality and tone. -
I considered this & spent a fair bit of time looking in to it. I couldn't find anywhere in the UK that stocked it though. I also found a few threads knocking about on talkbass etc where guys with VTC fitted Sadowskys said that the difference was minimal.
As in the difference between having the VTC all the way on compared to all the way off? That'd seriously suck. I'm imagined it was more like the tone control of the Fender's?
Sadowsky will sell one directly. The Gallery may also be able to help.
Yeah I see that Sadowsky sell them directly, I was just wondering if there's a UK stockist before I buy from the US. Thanks for your input chaps. Jamie

Hi all... Does anyone know if anywhere in the UK stock the Sadowsky VTC mod? Any thoughts and what not would be most welcome... Thanks Jamie
Yep- that's correct. Even cooler is if you decide you want to continue controling 2 exp outs on the moog with the exp pedal but want one to stay at a fixed position it will remember that position. It's all digital, so theres no worries using it with pedals that require different potentiometer values.
Ooo that's very cheeky isn't it! I can see these bad boys being a hit
Just read 4 pages on TB about it. So, if it costs @$150-200 over there, by the time postage & customs get ya it'll be @£300! Sounds cool as though.
It should work out a lot cheaper than that. Say it's $200 and costs $50 to get it shipped, that's $250. At today's rate that works out at roughly £150. Add 20% for VAT and 3% for customs and you'll be paying around £180 for this bad boy. I guess there may be room for movement on that if a few of us were to club in for a bulk order maybe? Although we may just save on shipping costs across the whole transaction, might be worth considering and working out though?

Yeah, I'm on about the Import models made from Maple!

Am I right in thinking that the The Mini Expressionator will essentially allow you to control, say 3 separate functions from a single Moog pedal, using just 1 expression pedal? So, in other words, you take the expression pedal out from 3 outs on a given Fooger, or 3 separate pedals, plug them into The Mini Expressionator and then have 1 pedal to control all 3 functions at once? Or can you stomp on each input to allow you to mix it up? If I'm getting the gist of it correctly then that's very cool!!! If not...someone build this!

Hello there everyone... I've recently become the owner of a Sadowsky Metro RV5. I've been a fan of the concept behind the whole super Jazz bass for yonks, and having played some of the Tokyo range, the Atelier Z's and Celinder versions in the past, along with the quirky take that the F Bass Studio is I thought I'd accept the offer I was presented with this Metro model. At first I found it to be far from inspiring to be honest, but having had a chance to use it in a jam setting, around other instruments/backing tracks...it really comes into it's own. It cuts through like nobody's business. My old F Bass never did this for me, and my Precision struggles to do this at times. So safe to say, I'm quite taken with this Metro. I think it lacks on the solo front though, as in, just on it's own. It's too bright for me...I plan to get the Vintage Tone Control to install though to help to compensate for this. Anyway...I've also been quite taken with the new Zon Sonus Standard range. They look awesome to me, and from what I've heard, they sound great. I was just wondering if anyone out there might be able to offer some thoughts on how the two would compare...the Sadowsky Metro RV5 and the Zon Sonus Standard 5. The Zon's seem to have a really clear and palatable natural voice to my ears. But I'm yet to try one of these newer models. I'm looking to string something E-C, but wonder if the Sadowsky is the right instrument to do that with. I think it's naturally a 5 string that favours being used as a work horse, strung B-G and being abused night after night, but never failing. The Zon strikes me as more of a bass to be used to experiment with in terms of it's voice. Obviously, a bass is whatever you make of it, and will only do what the player can do with it. But I seem to feel inspired in different ways with different basses. Enough waffling though, as usual I've taken up far too much space to get my thoughts across. If any of you have any thoughts on either/or basses please share them with me. Thanks in advance... Jamie

Hi everyone... I'm looking to get myself my first set of studio reference monitors for my little studio set up here at home. I'm using Reason and Garageband, although I'm about to expand that to include Propellerhead's Record as well, or the new Reason 6 when it comes out which handles audio too. I mainly use my set up for laying down ideas to expand further with my projects elsewhere, but I'd like to be able to start writing more of my own material and use the set up to create music for a commercial venture I'm considering. So basically I'm after a set of monitors that will give me a decent sound but i'm working to a budget of around £200 ideally. Is this enough to get myself a decent enough pair of monitors? I'll be using them to listen to music through my laptop too and for learning bass lines/songs etc. I guess that's obviously irrelevant. Anyway, any and all info would be awesome thanks folks! Just a thought, but if anyone knows of any guides anywhere for this sort of thing please let me know. I'm searching Sound on Sound for a Studio SOS on this but haven't yet found anything. Thanks in advance. Jamie

Guys...dumb question... What does CV stand for? As well as all the other abbreviations you're using? Thanks Jam
I've just reread what I put - very sorry dude. That was a pure typo! I meant to say my 1st purchase would be the MF-101 (LPF) / my description of why is relevant to the LPF. That will teach me to write long posts on my iPhone when I should be working!
Ah no worries kind sir I was thinking the LPF would be the first beast to tackle. But you reckon the MP-201 would definitely be worth considering to get the most out of the Moog's? Or could a couple of expression pedals get me started? Thanks Jam
-
Woah...thanks for all of that chaps! Seems like a powerful piece of kit. What I was meaning though Shep is as follows. You said you'd make the MP-201 your first Moog purchase. Before any of the pedals? I was of the impression that the MP-201 only controls other pedals/midi units etc, not acts as a stand alone unit. So if I were to look at buying the MP-201 first of all, surely I'd not be able to use it until I had a 'Fooger for it to control? Hope that makes sense. I'm not trying to be pedantic or anything, just making sure I'm not getting my wires crossed is all. I can definitely see the advantages that the MP-201 offers though, very cool indeed!
-
Thanks for all the input guys and gals, really interesting stuff indeed! I had a feeling the LPF would be the weapon of choice to begin with...looks like the most usable for my situation. Just one thing you mentioned though Shep...
My 1st purchase from Moog would always be an MP-201, it is the glue that holds the bass in eletronica, from fat dub EQ settings to synth sweeps. No contest, don't look around, do not pass go, do not collect £200. Buy an expression pedal with it as well, connect it to cutoff and with the pedals you already have, you have got yourself an electronica set up.
Isn't the MP-201 just a controller for the other pedals in a round about way? In other words, don't I need a MoogerFooger for this to control before it's of any use to me? Sorry if I've missed something here, just thought I'd clarify it is all. Thanks in advance folks... Jam

Hello there kind people of the bass world... How goes it? I've recently embarked on a quest of crazy effect noise making stuff...some what to the detriment of my bank balance but it's all been good fun. I'm trying to emulate that dirty DubStep kind of bass sound, the warbling and the nastiness of it. But also the sounds created by John Davis of Nerve, the weird Electronica kind of stuff. Basically I'm trying to turn my bass guitar rig into a bass synth rig in a round about way. Looking at the Moog pedals, I seem to be interested in the MF-105M and the MF-101. The 101 has the Low Pass Filter, which I assume I could use to create that really huge low end madness with and then open it up to release the whacky high end stuff using a pedal? And the 105, that has an LFO I believe, and you can use it to create patterns that the input triggers? I'm not that clued up on it all to be fair. Anyway, I've got a Line 6 M13, Boss OC-2, EBS OctaBass, Mesa Boogie Bottle Rocket and some other things knocking about. But I do think I need something like one of these Moogs to really open the whole whack synth like world of noise. Any suggestions on which Moog might offer the most, or which would be the most usable? I see John Davis of Nerve uses the MF-101 controlled via the MP-201 multi-pedal...interesting stuff! Thanks in advance for any thoughts. Jamie

Hello everyone... Just wondered if any of you are signed up to Janek Gwizdala's videobasslessons.tv? If so, what are your thoughts on it please folks? Is it worth the $39 a month d'you think? Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks Jamie

Had a bit more of a play around tonight having picked up the M13...it's beasty! Need some expression pedals I reckon...that would just make it monstrous! Here's a little clip of me jamming with it... Jam
That's a good sound you've got for getting started on. I like the synth still going down whilst you change notes. I've been looking at the M13 too & seriously toying with the idea of selling/trading the Bass Murf for one. Thing is, I like the fact that the murf gives me a pretty unique sound & there's possibilities with it that I'm just starting to explore (I'll record some soon). What's the octave section like on the M13?
Thanks man. I had 3 or 4 different lines going on there though, so the synth sliding down was a separate line! I've not got my hands on the M13 yet, hoping to pick it up tonight! But the octaver is based on the EBS OctaBass which I have the pedal of. The pedal version is ok, the tracking fades away quite quickly on low input instruments, but the M13 will allow me to boost the signal pre-octaver I guess which should counter-act that Looking forward to getting my hands on it that's for sure!

Thank you for that kind sir!

Hello everyone... I've just stumbled across the Sonuus B2M device and like the sound of it. My knowledge of midi and all that is somewhat limited, but I have a Line 6 Toneport UX2 and run Garageband and Reason on my laptop. Can I use the B2M with Reason then, allowing me in effect to turn my bass into a Midi Controller for the program...unlocking untold noise making capabilities and Squarepusher-esque fun for hours upon end? Please say it's so... If anything I'm guessing I may need to get a different interface to convert the midi into a laptop friendly language. Or can I just get a Midi to USB lead or something? EDIT: I see they make the i2M Musicport, which if I'm not mistaken is a midi convertor and an interface...2 in 1 yes? It just doesn't allow you to send an un-affected single anywhere right? Nothing that couldn't be fixed with a blend pedal or something right? Whatever the case...I'm seriously excited about the prospect of this! Yes yes! Thanks in advance party people... Jamie

I can't wait to get my hands on it! Think I'd like to get a Moog MF-101 as well, and the Mesa Boogie Bottle Rocket that I have is simply insane! Love it...! I think that set-up would see me set up for life! That and as many expression pedals as I can get my hands on! Ha!

Hey, I'm not sure if this is going to be entirely helpful but I use the Terror 500 and have never really been able to push it too hard, even in loud loud loud situations. I can't see the need for the 1000 watt version. I was using it with an Ampeg SVT610HLF and it moved some serious air with the Terror. And yes, the D.I is too hot, not really usable as things stand. You need the attenuator! I've not looked into changing the valves though. The Orange gear is awesome though. I want to get a cab next...not sure which one though. Thanks Jamie
