1. Hello everyone, --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ME NO LONGER OWN A THE GRABBER --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I've had a change in circumstances and no longer have a need for my Grabber. I bought it to use in a band I'm no longer in, and I have other basses that are more suitable to my current needs. The bass has been with me since March of this year, which is when I bought it from Andy Baxter, of Andy Baxter Bass in London. Here's a link to the sale page with pictures - Gibson Grabber 1979 Photos Here are a few of the pics for your pleasure though... It's completely original, with the sliding pick up and everything. Made from maple, body, neck and fingerboard. And it weighs 8lb 13oz. The scale length is 34 1/2". The bass is seriously awesome in sounds mint, both in the studio and live. Had a cracking session with it with the band I was playing it in. I was a bit nervous about using it as I'd only had it a week or two and planned on using my Precision, but the Grabber was all I could get to the studio in the end and it sounded absolutely awesome in the studio! There's a rough demo that this bass was played on at the following address...the track is called "I Spent All My Taxi Money On Captain Morgans". I had quite a dirty tone for the band but it gives you something to go by for the bass I suppose. The main riff is quite dirty I guess, the end is very different so it shows a few different characteristics. This was played with a pick, going into a Mesa Boogie Bottle Rocket before going into the studio. The link - Play "I Spent All My Taxi Money On Captain Morgans" As for what I'm hoping to get for the bass etc. I'm in need of a fretted 5 string bass. Pretty open to suggestions, with cash either way if needs be, or a straight swap. I'd also consider an Ibanez GWB bass of any kind, I'm thinking of having my GWB35 fretted you see. Other than that, I'd consider an Orange, Bag End, Aguilar, Bergatino cab. Try me though. Cash wise, it's tough to know what to ask seeing as it's an old instrument. Price - She's left me for another man...whhhhhyyyyyy?!?!?! Thanks for looking, feel free to pm me with your offers and questions folks...I'm in Grantham, Lincs. and would welcome anyone who fancies having a go on it. Let the games begin... Jam
2. Hi Mike Do you have any sound clips of this? And how does it compare to your GWB Ibby for feel and what not? I was thinking of getting one to have fretted but this may be a better option. Thanks Jamie
3. Thanks chaps and keep them coming!
4. Hello fellow basschatter's... Just wondered what mods,it any at all,you folks have carried out on a GWB35? And with what results? Or what mods have you heard others do? Would the Aguilar obp-1 be an improvement for instance? Or a bartoloni pickup? Maybe a Nordstrand one? I appreciate it's all down to taste but get amongst it folks! Thanks in advance Jamie
5.
Interesting idea. I hadn't considered a fully custom job before. If I was to persue that avenue, which luthiers should I be looking at? And thanks for the replies guys, plenty of stuff already that I've never heard of!
Just spotted this post of yours pal... Custom basses are a minefield if you don't know exactly what you want and why you want it. You can go to any luthier as say you want a Super Jazz that has that 70's honk and that kicks but...and with £3k to play with you'll find pretty much every luthier will entertain you there...but you really need to know your stuff to make it worth while in my opinion. You could easily spend £3k on getting a custom built bass, going along with the luthier's suggestions, end up with a great bass. But you could just as easily walk into a boutique bass dealer, pick up a second Sadowsky or Nordy that's £1200 that does exactly what you want. Getting a bass built, especially at that level of outlay, requires an extreme amount of testing out and trialing different basses across a massive spectrum of different configurations. You may like the feel of a single cut Sei, but the tone of a Marleaux Constat. The ease of an F Bass' fingerboard with the mandolin frets, or the playability and comfort of an Overwater Progress... It's a minefield! This is all just my opinion of course. I just remember being where you are now and almost made a massive mistake because I didn't really know what I wanted, what woods I really wanted, neck profile, string spacing, neck type etc. My apologies for the rant... Jamie
6. Mike Lull basses are pretty awesome too, up there with the Sadowsky's and what not. But your budget would definitely find your a mean Celinder, i've played a few now and they've all just ooozed rude boy jazzness...pure filth. Loved everyone of them. Nordstrand make the Nordy's which are Jazz basses. There's one for sale on here at the moment I think. The Marleaux Jazz basses got great reviews, never played one myself, but I used to own one of their Constat basses. The Workmanship was stunning, and the sound was incredible. There is also the Fodera NYC basses in the Jazz range. I've played an Atelier Jazz bass before, Ari's old one. Lovely bass, sounded awesome, weighed a ton though. Made by a Japanese Luthier who used to craft the Sadowsky Tokyo models, the two basses, the Sadowsky Tokyo, and Atelier Z's are very similar if not the same in many many ways. Great Super Jazzes. And if you're ok with a quirky take on the Jazz bass, the F Basses are pretty awesome. Although they're not strictly Jazzesque by any stretch of the imagination. Having owned one of their Studio 5 models, I can confirm that they're awesome. Mine lacked the bark of a 70's Jazz, but I played another that had enough of it to put a smile on anyones face. Hope that's of some help to you.
7. I was thinking of getting another one to have fretted...?
8. Hello all... Just wondered what peoples thoughts might be on the thought of fretting a GWB35? I'm a fan of them, their feel and tone, and really like the sound of the GWB2, the fretted version but they're raaaaaaaaaarrrrrreeeee! You'd be looking at about £100 I guess minimum to have the work done, so, potentially having invested £400-450 into the instrument. What say you folks? Jam
9. I played one of these today at Rattle and Drum in Derby. Now, I'm not being big headed or anything, but I've owned some nice basses over the years, including USA Fenders, Marleaux, Ken Smith, F Bass...and this Squier was a genuinely good bass!!! It really surprised me to be honest with you. I'm not a killer bassist by any stretch of the imagination, but the bass felt really nice to play, the neck felt comfortable and playable. It neck dived a bit if anything. But sound and tone wise, it was spot on. For £280 new I don't think you can go wrong really for the classic Fender tone in a 5 string package. It really grooved and sounded spot on, some nice vintage tones there. Fair enough the inlays are plastic not pearloid and all that kind of stuff, but it genuinely sounded good. The B string held it's tone nicely too. Didn't sound weak or lack any ballsyness. I played one of the Squier Deluxe 5 string Jazzers a few months back and it was horrible to play. The neck was way too chunky and it felt shoddy in my hands. This Vintage Modified one knocked the spots off the Deluxe for me. That's all just my opinion of course, but I'm considering getting one as I'm on the hunt for a 5 string and it'd come in at about 50% of what I'm prepared to spend on a 5 string at the moment! Hope that's of some help. Jamie

11. Bump...any 5 strings out there for trade?
12. Hi, What's the scale length on this please? And what does the pre-amp do please, so what controls does it offer? Thanks Jamie
13. Bump...and I'd consider a bass in trade with cash either way if needed.

15. *SOLD* Hi everyone, I'm considering moving my Ampeg SVT 610HLF cab on, but I'm not certain that I want to yet, it pumps our some serious bass!!! Thing is, I'm not really using it and won't be for the foreseeable future, but I could do with something a bit smaller. I'd consider an Orange cab of some kind, or a decent 1x12 maybe. Open to suggestions, however the right amount of cash is probably more appealing. I'd also consider taking a bass on, with cash either way. Let me know what you've got. *SOLD* It's in good condition with no rips or anything of the sort. I've had the cab about 20 months or so. It's a U.S.A made one. Any questions just pm me please. Thanks in advance. Jamie
16. Hi everyone... Just a quick bump up about this as it's almost the weekend... We're really hyped about these gigs... Would be cool to meet any of you if you can pop down... Pm me if so... Jam
17. Whooosshhh...back up to the top!
18.
swap for Tony Levin OLP MM5 in the creamy colour
Thanks for the offer but it wouldn't be of interest.
19. Thanks for those suggestions...I'm not sure on the pickup dimensions but I'll look into that. Thank you...
20.
Very cool. Didn't they do one with the inlay bars on the fretboard also? The guy from My Ruin uses one of these, and gets a lovely rock tone from it.
I think the standard EB-3 has the inlays. This is the 1960's re-issue which has the smaller body and the dots, etc. And yes yes, it does have a pretty sweet tone. Loads of depth!
