  1. Just got back from meeting Nick in a usual Basschatters trading area, (a motorway services carpark!!!) for an amp swap.

Great communications throughout and his amp was as described, brand new.

    Proper gent to deal with.

    Cheers Nick.

    Steve

Is it a class D PSU? if so, I am not so sure - my ABM 500 is old school heavy tech, and the lightweight PSU might not offer the same sound and feel..

Yep, just edited, as still getting to grips with the amps controls - it`s the VLE completely off, and the VPF on full. Yes it does scoop the mids, but playing in punk bands with Gibson type distorted guitars, and using a Precision with year-old Roto rounds, I want a bass presence, but don`t want the whole spectrum of the band to be middied-out. I prefer the bass to be a supporting instrument, providing a foundation with the drums, on which the guitars sit nicely. Still gets a great warm bass, with each note being clear, played In The City the other night, and as soon as the bass kicked in, the audience gave a cheer.

Agreed, I use my VPF filter a lot in my punk band, it really fits in.

That is the only one I'd give a bash. I am all for technological advances (hell, I like the Bongo) but something about a P Bass to me is the pure simplicity. Plug in, tone control to taste, done.

I've heard a lot of active P basses and they have something that takes away the organic P bass tone...although I've yet to hear a P Retro in the flesh so to speak.

I think its the high mids...they almost become a little too cutting and precise/modern.

I think the phrase "P Bass on steroids" fits perfectly.

To the OP... if you're getting a bass made with two MM pups, and have a HH ray, what don't you like about the ray. The Warwick $$ secondhand may also be a cheaper option.

My main bass is a Mex Roger Waters, from the first time I played it, it felt like I had had it years. It was 'just right'.

When I play the Ray it always feels like I am fighting with it.

Good shout on Ou7Shined, cheers, I'll send him a PM.

  6. I love my P Bass it feels just right for me. I like the look, I like how it sounds.

Just recently I have been using my Ray HH, I bought it in a mad state of GAS and never really got on with it, but, it does sound great in the mix due to it having a few more tonal options.

I was all set to order a Shuker JJ, but am wondering if I went for a HH configuration instead of the split coil, I would have a bass I am comfy with and like the look and feel of, but all the tones my Stingray gets.

Is it really that simple? Anyone tried this?

Ashdown are well used amps, many pros use them, and watch any televised festivals, it`s more than likely you`ll see Ashdown bass amps all over the place. They have a reputation (un-warranted in my opinion) for a warm woolly sound, but I don`t think either Bruce Foxton or JJ Burnell could ever be described as having woolly sounds, and they both use Ashdown. As with anything, it`s how you use the eq. They do have a nice rich sound to them though.

    Totally agree.

Saying that, I have not seen Bruce Foxton use one yet, he still seems to be taking his VBA stack out.

  8. I tried them and half way through rehearsal took them off and put the old strings back on.

Agree with BassBus's post about them being sticky and felt I had no guts to my sound. That had been on the bass for a good few weeks using it at home and they were only just starting to wear in but with the band they did not work for me at all. I've never felt the need to do that with any other strings.

  9. So I am setting up a facebook page for my new band. I have noticed recently that a couple of local bands have set their band pages up like you would if you were joining facebook for yourself.

My previous bands page was a standard group page.

The only difference I can see is that you need a separate email address if you are going to set up a band page using the personal page route.

Anyone got any views on this, or does it not really matter?
