1. But if you are creating 'original' work, especially at the top level of the industry, how do you remember stuff if you can't write it down. I would imagine that for example 'Pino' creates a huge number of original bass lines every year for various artists in various styles. Not forgetting how these things 'develop' over time and being called back in to further work on projects. Pino must have an outstanding memory because I will probably forget this conversation in 2hrs time
2.
Pino doesn't really have a 'sound' these days. I imagine he can do pretty much anything tonally. He's just a natural player with great ears, taste and feel.
To be fair this is not a criticism of 'Pino', he is a great player and deserves all of his success. But, when he has layed down a bass track does anyone put it into dots or does it just stay in his head. In fact are any top flight musicians 'fussy' about transcribing their work accurately, because I would be!
3. I'm guessing that 'Pino', with his massive talent, can quite confidently 'bluff' his way through any session at the highest level without concerning himself with dots, leaving that to others to worry about. But can you seriously turn up to a studio session with for example David Bowie and not be able to converse with other musicians without a knowledge of 'dots'. I was reminded of this a few months back with the story of TOTPs, where all the music had to be played by the in house orchestra. I'm guessing all the bands had to have the music transcribed or did the orchestra wing it/play by ear? I was going to use The Stranglers as an example by I suspect all their music is in dots anyway
4. Let's hope that whoever has to sign the documents is waiting by the letterbox with a pen in their hand!
5. I'd imagine that Elton John has all his music "in dots" but does everyone? If The who invite me to play bass for them would I be expected to learn their songs by ear or would I get a wad of sheet music. When Pino gets the invite to lay down some bass tracks for John Mayers new album who if anyone has the responsibility to convert it to dots. If topflight musicians dont record songs on sheet music what happens when you forget something you played 30yrs ago?
6.
Last time i lent my bass head out to a mate it came back knackered, he did have it repaired but i won't be doing it again
He must have "played it like a rental"
7. Its amazing how unfriendly 'mates' can be when something expensive you lent them gets broken
8. I get the impression that if Fender approached JJ about a signature bass he probably wouldnt be too bothered
9. If its that urgent/important, would it be completely out of the question to go yourself?

12.
The problem with an acoustic instrument is that bashes and bumps may damage the soundbox, and they might also reduce the strength of the instrument. Double basses are glued together; anything which cracks the glue... you can wind up with a pile of splinters. (I know this because I own a cello. It still works but it's been pegged and glued, and glued, and glued )
So the whole gigged and road worn look (faux or not) isnt a 'thing' in the way it is with electric bass. I'm guessing that if I pulled out an instrument from the 60s nobody would bat an eye if it looked as though it had been thrown off a cliff, whereas an antique Cello would still be 99% of original condition
13. Really sad story. Although its not unusual to find hugely gifted people that are also 'troubled' in some way.
14. To be honest its not difficult to see why she's got the 'ump! Playing in a band is a bit more of a hobby than golf or fishing and in my limited experience wives 'hate' hobbies of any sort because thats wasted time when you could be doing DIY!
15.
Towngate Theatre by chance?
"HellsBells" are you psychic! My lady friend and her gang see a lot of live music in the Basildon, Laindon, Pitsea, Canvey area. I was surprised when I was at Southend sea front and 'no' live music playing in anywhere? Sign of the times I guess
16.
Stay out of pubs as tributes don't tend to do so well there... but there is a circuit that can sustain tribute bands, IMO.. which is why original bands tend to think, IME, that tribs are killing music...but then they'd probably say that about cover bands as well, even if they happen to play in one..
Its in a small seated venue in basildon
17. I know very little about double basses but is the "road worn/beaten up look" acceptable in the way that it is with an electric bass guitar? Is damaged frowned up or is it classed as 'patina' like an old guitar. Reason I'm asking is that I've spotted a few on TV recently from street buskers to orchestra and jazz clubs and they are all fine, well cared for looking instruments, clearly not subject to a hard gigging life
18.
Jaco classified himself as unclassified. Legend has it that he was noodling on his bass of doom at the university of Florida and a passing bassist commented "Wow, that bass sounds amazing!"...to which Jaco placed it back in its stand and asked "Yeah? Well, how does it sound now?" For me, that gives perspective to the rampant GAS fascination so often seen around these parts...the name on the headstock is of no relevance, it's the name playing it that counts.
I'd agree, personally I dont think he was as attached to his bass as his fan club seem to be. It clearly didnt get much 'love' and was just a tool.
19. Just thought I'd raise this thread from the dead by saying a lady friend of mine has bought tickets for us to see an AC/DC tribute band in April. I'll post a name when I see the tickets.
20. Just out of interest, did Jaco class himself as a 'Fender' guy?
21. What do you do about keeping the lacquer off the frets, do they have to be masked up?
22. I've done one myself. I was a bit lucky getting the frets out clean which is the first big problem, the second is finishing the fretboard properly, the third is whether you apply a finish or not, and if you do, god help you if it doesnt go well. Defretting's a bit like having kids, the first is often a throwaway!
23.
Congrats , that looks like a labour of love , nice one Now all you need to do is puncture your drivers
It always amazes me how much effort is put into recreating 'JJ's' tone on those early tracks, especially compared to how much effort he put into it?
