I was in a really interesting guitar & music shop (pawn) shop in Denver a few months ago. I got talking to the owner and mentioned a really nice looking German double bass that he had in the shop. He said go ahead and have a play on it which I did. When I returned he asked me how it went. I said it had a really nice tone but it was a shame that it was out of tune. He replied that he deliberately kept all his instruments out of tune as there was a school up the road and he was tired of the kids coming in at lunch time, taking the guitars down and showing off their rock solos with no intention of buying. The kids couldn't be bothered to tune them so they didn't come in any more. If any customer was really interested he would tune any instrument up for them. Made me laugh!
I wonder why he didnt mention that the instruments were out of tune to you before you played. He must have thought you were a school kid too?
Depends on whether it's paying the mortgage really......if you can live without it and afford to bugger off and just play music, it's a no-brainer........
I agree with this. If you are a successful "IT Consultant" and playing is a hobby then do what you like. If its a 'job' then you need to maintain revenue stream. Even 'Pino' has to pay the bills

Another thing you will find is that the nearer you live to London and the South East the more you will be hated!
It's because the last leg is handled by UK workers who are over worked and underpaid by companies always looking to improve profit over service and work conditions. Followed by the ridiculous pay of managers, and manager's manager etc etc. I got a parcel from UPS at around 7:30 at night on a Friday!!! And he told me they are looking to introduce the same 7/8am till 8pm on Saturdays too.
.. and then be the "whipping boys" for the inadequacies of those managers and computer systems 6 days a week -
Selling his artwork and sculptures is bad enough but it must be really tough for the family to sell off Micks instruments; but we all have bills to pay I guess.

I like the bass on this too. In fact, I'm surprised it slipped under the BC radar. Who was the bassist?

Although it goes without saying he was a massive talent, those old motown songs were very special too
Pop stations have been routinely compressed for decades, which is why bands used to produce a 'radio mix' for the purpose.
Yeah I know about the 'pop' mix, but the tone of the radio stations themselves is different too. Do radio stations aim for a certain tone. As I said before, radio 1 and capital radio have a different tonal quality. Radio 1 tends to sound more bright and 'up front' whereas capital sounds more 'full' and rounded. You tend to notice this more in the car. Or am I finally goimg mad
-
Sorry to drag this thread off course a bit but is there a difference in the sound quality of different major radio sations, especially radio 1 and capital radio, I get the impression that the sound is shaped to sound better in a car as that seems to be the most popular way to listen to the radio. Capital seems to be "all bump and tizz" no midrange whereas radio 1 sounds more "flatter"
"Oh, you can't eat wheat? Then I'll have this huge plate of pasta, while you watch, and let you know what it tastes like" I'm resigned to not finding lefty models in shops, so I tend to buy new, and often online. As a consequence, I haven't got any horrid customer service experiences to tell, except for the odd sexism episode ("You're looking to buy for your son?" or "Waiting for your boyfriend, love?").
Yeah thats pretty bad, but when you're over 50yr you are not welcome in music shops. Seems to make young sales people very uncomfortable!
Could be amps and cabs as well, a lot of touring bands will rent their equipment cheaper from endorsements, as if there is a problem they can get it swapped out pretty quickly, and if your flying, sometimes it's cheaper to rent than pay for the extra luggage costs.
I guess it makes sense, especially if you have a guitar tech to get it how you like it every time
-
They mention "equipment hire", so does this mean they dont use their own instruments to avoid wear and tear or damage
-
That's a lovely looking thing! You can't go wrong with a Yamaha
Just remember one thing when you're saying that products made in China are cheap and crap. All of your iMacs, MacBook Pros and iPhones are all made in China. Cheap crap yeah? I don't think the country of origin can be seen as a sign of quality. As someone mentioned above, the variance in quality of the US models is what's damaging the brand.
Although to be fair Chinese iphones are not built to last forever. Just imagine how much an iphone would cost if the Germans built it!
Fixed.
I dont mind the 'mojo', it makes it seem a more honest item to me. Makes a change from the mint condition and unplayed 'affinity' squiers that will be in cash converters after Christmas
..but back to the thread ...do you know which model it is, mentalextra? If it has block inlays, it will definitely be long scale. If it has dots, it could be either (the 'special' is 34" and the 'special SS' is shortscale) ...and have you bought it yet???
I'm pondering on going back tomorrow for another look. I dont remember it having block inlays. It was black, made in indonesia and it was covered in 'playing DNA'
