Covers bands and 'professionalism'?
mentalextra replied to The Admiral's topic in General Discussion
I've got a lady friend who is a keen follower of a local band. She has been to see them play a few times since Christmas. Both times they have been 20/30mins late onto stage because of 'propping up the bar'. The same band did a gig just before Christmas, they were over an hour late arriving at the venue, with no apologies! They have loyal fans who seem to ignore their lack of punctuality as being 'rock and roll'. -
That black Wal! Hmmm

First off I'm a right handed player and a right handed person. Would I be right in thinking that the fretting hand is the 'busier hand' and that it would make more sense for a right handed person to play left handed guitar/bass if you see what I mean? Or am i talking crap?
The biggest problem with defretting a dream bass is that you might hate the result and not have an easy way back to where you started. As others have said, buying a spare neck or another instrument would be a far safer option.
Yeah, I agree. Dont de fret your favourite bass, because it might not be your favourite after the work's been done!

In another parallel universe RHCP concert tickets are slashed when they mime?

Sorry to dig up this old thread but I saw this on the clip on TV a while ago and I am convinced its a fretless? But I've got a feeling someone will know. I understand the TOTPs would furnish musicians with whatever instruments were available for filming as it was pre recorded anyway, and if they didnt arrive with their own, that could explain it. Or is it fretted? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JQ63Y-X-2xA

Pino Palladino...once again...how sh*t hot is he?
mentalextra replied to merello's topic in General Discussion
His mild-mannered demeanour in person could be a little misleading, I would say.
Surely you can't be "really nice" all the time and survive in the business, or can you? I mean, the numbers are huge and for a jobbing musician maintaining standards is important. Perhaps some are more willing to compromise than others, but you would have to stand your ground at some point surely, even Pino? -
According to the cover notes Assassin was a year before No Parlez and Pino was on it largely because Numan had had some sort of disagreement with Mick Karn - you can conjecture on whether No Parlez would have happened without. Anyway the playing is phenominal, as indeed it is on Voodoo.
Yeah, interesting. Didn't Mick also fall out with Kate Bush and Bill Nelson. Although I dont know the full story but its interesting that artists like Bush/Nelson/Numan would have provided Karn with the required amount of 'elbow room' to exploit his talents. Is Pino an easier going guy at the studio, is he willing to just give artists what they want and not what he wants to give them. Pino is great, he is one guy I would like to meet! He looks like the sort of guy you could 'prop up a bar with' not up his own arse like some. ([s]John Mayer[/s]) -
2014 easier than 1951 to play Bass?
mentalextra replied to Mr Fretbuzz's topic in General Discussion
I was thinking in the car about bass, as you do, instead of concentrating on the road, is it easier or more difficult these days to play Bass? I was thinking what we have now compared to what they had then when the P Bass came out. We have utube, computer programmes and apps, amazon selling tons of bass books, tv, digital, a huge archive of songs since 1951, DVDs, mp3 s,CDs , lots of bass players and bass tutors, bass magazines, bass shows etc etc. What did they have? 78s on a record player black and white tv with a few channels and probably poor double bass recordings. Have we got so much stuff that we can't see the wood for the trees?
Funny you should say that. I was thinking something very similar recently. When I picked up a bass back in the '70s the only help you had was TOTPs, or some dry "how to play Jazz" book from the library, if you were lucky there was a thin floppy plastic 45rpm record that never worked or was missing! Surely, its got to be easier now to get the basics what with youtube and online tutors and this and that! -

Would you pay a small fee - to try out a bass/guitar?
mentalextra replied to Big_Stu's topic in General Discussion
We had a gent today who came in, unlocked a guitar on the wall (ie helped himself despite 2 of us asking if he was ok or needed help etc, to which his response was a flat 'no'). He then dropped the guitar (acoustic) cracked the back, passed it to me and said 'here *passes instrument*... Sorry', walked out of the shop and so we now have to recoup the items cost despite the damage which he hasn't paid a penny for.
A friend of mine had a punter crash a car on a test drive and run off! Try sorting that mess out! -

Alice Coopers - why don't I like him?
mentalextra replied to mentalextra's topic in General Discussion
There is always going to be artistes from your chosen genre that you just don't connect with, I love most things old school punk but could never connect with Siouxsie and the Banshees, don't know why it just has never happened. I wouldn't worry about it
Interesting, I wouldnt have described siouxsie as punk, more punk poser, but I know what you mean. I used to have regular arguments with a guy who lusted after her; he also lusted after Deborah Harry who does nothing for me and who also somehow got caught up in the punk thing. I couldnt help remember when I was on a school trip, walking into a record shop (remember those) around '77 and bought Rezillo's Can't stand my baby! - great days! Still got it too -
Would you pay a small fee - to try out a bass/guitar?
mentalextra replied to Big_Stu's topic in General Discussion
You dont pay to try out furniture, HiFi, clothes or even cars. Whats so special about instruments? What does the charge cover exactly, or is it supposed to discourage potential customers; which sounds a little like contradiction? -
Not really - maybe the mods would like to move it....
Its not a big deal, happy to post about Mick wherever he is

I think this thread should be in general discussion, is it in 'off topic' for any particular reason?

eBay's "Global Postage Programme"...
mentalextra replied to lowregisterhead's topic in General Discussion
I would try leaning heavily on the seller and insisting they send the original item at their expense - it was their mistake after all. The vase is their property, and they should have to arrange for its return, not you. If they won't play ball, don't accept delivery of the vase, open a dispute through eBay for an item not recieved, and leave them to sort it out. You've bought and paid for jeans - that's what you should get, and if they don't arrive you should receive a full refund.
+1 Its not your mistake -
What a great talent, what a great loss

The realities of being the bass player?
mentalextra replied to The Admiral's topic in General Discussion
I assume we are talking about "rock" music as whether you like it or not, its 'defined' by the guitars. But, Jazz for example has no "favourites", they all get the girl/boy, same with Punk. Not sure about Reggae as I would say that 'bass' has a bigger part in the sound, who knows... Just my opinion -
Alice Coopers - why don't I like him?
mentalextra replied to mentalextra's topic in General Discussion
Schools Out for Alice Cooper for you then !! John
I asked for that, didnt I! -
After all I should. I'm a 'rocker' and he ticks all the boxes. I grew up on stuff like this. Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, AC/DC. And that was back in the day when they weren't just churning it out to pay off the ex wives. But, Alice Cooper's never seemed to float my boat and I could never quite pin down the reason. I watched the concert last night on TV when he played Wembley years ago, hoping to see any new insight and it still leaves me cold. Maybe its because he always sounds like he is doing it by the numbers, a tick box menu of what any rock track should contain. Maybe the occult references and obsession with death is over played these days, but you can't blame Alice for that, plenty of other groups use it as a tool also. I've even heard plenty of interviews outside of music business and he actually sounds like a decent guy compared to some others at his level, and it not up his own arse or off with the fairies either!. Without appearing like I'm trolling/hateing, or trying to annoy the fan club, why dont I like his music? And believe me I have really tried?

I've never been that into "funk" but I do like bootsy for some reason.

Strap length: been able to play vs looking cool
mentalextra replied to col.decker's topic in General Discussion
You only have to watch a bit of music TV to see that 'eyeliner' seems to be the new cool thing! But at least video's are simple; from a drop down menu of either, on the beach at night with random bonfires, warehouse/industrial unit or back alley in the rain -
Need advice on charging for recording session's?
mentalextra replied to JamesFlashG's topic in General Discussion
HI, I am doing some recording sessions for a producer in the coming weeks for some tracks he has been asked to compose for the BBC, he has asked me If I can write my own parts to what he currently has down. I am going for a meeting tomorrow with him and some others involved in the project, one of the things to be discussed tomorrow is payment. I have no idea what I should agree as a reasonable rate having not done this type of work before. Hourly? or just an agreed fee for the recordings I do per track for example? Also if i am composing a bass line rather than playing a previously written part should I expect to have some small percentage of royalties from it as I contributed too composing? please any help or advice welcome i don't want to be taken advantage off but at the same time want to reasonable lol!
I'm surprised you've not been accused of 'vulgarity' for daring to mention music and money in the same sentence!
