Hi, before you start tearing the bass to bits, did you buy new or used. Because, if you bought this as a working instrument, someone has some explaining to do?

Jazz pickups for the bassist on budget
mentalextra replied to Jono Bolton's topic in Accessories and Misc
How cheap? -
-
Agreed, no sign of any musicianship or structure here! Even a little guitar solo! But keep it quiet!

This might sound daft, but with the wall hangers, how do you protect the body of the guitar from scratches off the wall its hanging from? They look like the guitar sits a few inches away but there's nothing to stop them moving if caught accidentally?

Who made you decide "I'm going to play bass!"
Jean-Jacques Burnel from The Stranglers!!!!! I heard that fabulously grungy bass sound and thought "I want to do THAT"!!!
+1 -
Now Woolworths has closed you can't even pick up a cheap compilation album for inspiration, from a basket outside for 99p!
I'd be pointing the Nozzle away from your face
When I worked in graphic arts years ago they used "spray mount" adhesive. Gives your lungs a lovely stick coating when you breathe it in!
-
Dont get the wrong idea, Im not Mr safety conscious but be very careful with it. Use it outside if you can. Nasty stuff to breath in or get in your eyes! As another possible source you can use spray adhesive to stick soundproofing in cars. Try Halfrauds or car radio shops

Fretless string gauges - fretless experts?
mentalextra replied to Sibob's topic in Accessories and Misc
I'm not a fretless expert! But, personally I like heavy gauge on my fretted basses and lighter gauge on my fretless. You will have to experiment, I found it much easier to get the sounds I wanted from the lighter gauge strings on the fretboard. I have big hands and big fingers too which I guess has an impact on all this. Just my opinion, have fun! -
I bought some cheapy ones off eBay. Black neoprene covered fingers, 2 screws into the wall. Think I paid £11 for 6. They've been up for 2 years or so, no problems.
That sounds more like it, do you remember the sellers name?
-
I dont really care how they look, as long as they are safe and cheap! lol
Check these out --- http://www.herculess...rs/hangers.html Great bits of kit and you can buy them from loads of UK websites
I can't find the prices, are they expensive. I need half a dozen!
-
Ok, I am thinking of putting my guitars on the wall for a number of reasons. I like the idea of the small hooks that you can lift them on and off. I wondered if anyone has actually made there own or found something that does the job equally well. Cheers
Flea's said that he doesn't just see himself as a bass player, but as an entertainer. The band does have a crazy image, but surely someone who's best mates with Damien Hirst and Thom Yorke, and goes back to college to study Bach, must something interesting to say? In the same way, I reckon he treats the stage and studio as two separate environments. He's happy to use the '61 Jazzs to record the last two albums where he's after the best sound he can get, but he's not going to throw them around on stage, which for him, is more about entertainment. He's always tended to use different basses to record than to play live to some degree.
Interesting, I never had him down as a "posessions" sort of guy; presumably he values the 61 jazz "above" using it on stage. I wonder if he think he's live audience are not interested in his sound/tone. Does he have a couple of classic Ferrari's in his garage! but prefers to walk or cycle everywhere!
I got very pissed at a RHCP gig years ago, babbled drunkenly on and on at the band after the gig and tried to join the tour by attempting to get on their bus *deep shame* Under the circumstances they were very nice about it... Flea was a top geezer as I remember (insamuch as I can remember anything).
It could have been worse. They could have got you to audition for them?
-
I always thought there was something a bit odd about Flea. I can't quite put my finger on it. You can't doubt his ability but not the sort of guy you could imagine spending a few hours propping up a bar with?
-
I particularly like the scratch plate and pups, are they standard?

Great video, although I dont know if I would be confident singing what is essentially a girl sing about boys. Or, has something huge just gone right over my head! lol
AAAAAARRH LAKESIDE...Noooooooo. Now im going to be tempted to go with the GF next time she goes shopping :-(
It could be worse! You know when things are getting serious when you get invited to Ikea! The ultimate nightmare. Not only the boredom of shopping there but the next day spent putting all the useless carp together! -

Does anyone know what happened to Mick Karns guitars? -
Hi can I play... been off work now for three weeks ( ill, heart attack) I have 15 basses, they have all been out for a clean ect,the only one that I have not put away is an old Yamaha rb200f a great bass to play, and its staying out !
Mine is identical. Actually was a good bass but I got it to defret. My problem is that where i am comfortable playing is right over the pups, and sometime I catch them!

When dealing with cheaper instruments, I never ceased to be amazed at the difference fitting quality pups make. Its the bass guitar equivalent to adding cheese! Most savory dishes are improved with cheese!
