9. Many thanks for everyone's input, most helpful. It sounds like my best option is 2x efficient 8ohm cabs. Genre wise I play in a number of bands which is kind of the issue as they all have different sound requirements. Duos and trios all is fine. But I also play in a 6 piece ska/reggae band and and 9 piece Highlife band. All in venues from toilets to large 500 capacity venues. The Ea Double does go down to 2ohms but you still only get 550 watts as per 4 ohms. I blend the pickups via the doubler which has variable phase reverse and HPF and I also run the full circle through a fishman platinum pro which also has phase reverse and HPF so I think I have that covered. What I do know is that whenever I go down the rabbit hole of getting my sound only louder the best improvement I can make is to practice more!!!
10. Hi I have an EA doubler and a 4ohm wizzy 12 m-line cab. Amp rated at 550 watts (@4ohm) and cab at 200 watts. I blend a full circle and a Krivo mag p/u. Happy with sound but need more volume. I can run the EA double with the peak lights blinking and master at full volume and the cab seems to handle this fine( which is a bit confusing - amp 550 watts, cab 200 watts?) but just need more volume for bigger gigs. If I added a second 4 Ohm cab like the Eden EX112 1x12" Compact Bass Cab, 4 Ohm that would bring it down to 2 Ohms. I have mocked this up with 2x P,JB 5" 50watts speakers wired at 4 ohms but it doesn't make alot of difference volume-wise and I see from the EA specs that the amp is still only 550 watts at 2ohms. My question, I guess, is will adding the 300w watt eden to the 200-watt wizzy give 500 watts and hence more volume? Or how do I get more volume? many thanks
11. Just replaced my full circle. Sure enough the new one sounds alot better so as often posted they do fade in time. That said the old one still works fine just a little muddy. Wondering whether to install it on the other side of the bridge instead of the adjuster wheel ? Could give me more options sound-wise and maybe even better feedback elimination which is the main reason for my thinking ie two pickups run quieter. Phase issues I can deal with on the amp. anyone tried this??
12. Any more feedback Mr Bassman, had a chance to gig it with UB??
13. Thanks The Rev,have read this as it happens.I'm a big fan of the PJ flight case because of the up firing speakers so this does look interesting.Guess I'll need to wait patiently for some uk reviews!
14. Anybody tried the new Acoustic Image Upshot extension speaker yet? https://www.thomann.de/gb/acoustic_image_upshot_s4plus_speaker_cabinet.htm
15. Thanks for this feedback, most helpful and I think worth the investment!
16. A conversation with our drummer last night got me thinking.....He uses custom made ear plugs and swears by them. What I didn't realise is that not only do they reduce noise levels and protect his hearing but also, he says, they demuddify the entire sound and help him to hear every nuance across the entire frequency range. Mmmmmmmm this sounds interesting. Removing boomy rooms and general dirge from what we are actually hearing as Double Bass players sounds too good to be true! Has any any experience of using the latest technology in ear plugs as a DB player and if so please share...................
17. Say hi to Ali for me,and sure be great to catch up!
18.
I can only imagine that the 4b is more expensive to make. It has 4 recesses on top into which the feet of a stacked cab fit (the C4 doesn't). The 4b is physically larger and substantially deeper, thus you would imagine it'd produce deeper lows. I've run upto 4 x 4b's with DB and never found it lacking in lows. In fact I've had more issues with taming the low end (especially at medium to high volume), and end up cutting the lows from about 80Hz to 100Hz typically. Had I not already bought the 4b's (before the C4 was ever released) I would've opted for the C4 instead.
Thanks zero 9, not hung up on the frequency response really just trying to decide between the two.Fair point about the construction cost.I thought maybe there was a design concept for both cabs that was aimed at different uses.I guess an AB comparison would be the real test, but a little impractical!
19. Thanks Chris, long time! That was my gut feeling i.e bigger, heavier=better. It's hard to get solid advice from dealers.Any view on a single 8x5" cab versus 2 no. 4 x 5". More flexible yes but I always need 4ohms for both my EA and AI heads.
20. Can anyone enlighten me of the differences between the Phil jones 4 x 5" cabs. My understanding,I asked the uk distributor,is that the C4 is a newer lighter version of the 4B and uses exactly the same piranha speaker. The 4B's larger cabinet and weight produce a frequency range of 35hz-15kz.The considerably lighter C4 has a range of 30hz-15khz. What I don't understand is why the 4B is 25% more expensive. Why would you pay more for a bigger heavier cab which doesn't go as low as the C4? Am I missing something. I'm looking to return to Phil Jones 5" speakers for a tighter more focused sound.I traded my flightcase 150 for an EA doubler and EA 12" cab which sound great but in the real world of noisy bars I am constantly battling a muddy sound. Figured a change of cabs might help. Will need 2 to get down to 4ohms or maybe go for a C8,which specs 25hz-15khz. Regardless of all the specs any real world experience of either C4/8 or 4B with DB would be appreciated. many thanks
21. This really is most helpful everyone so thanks again. I know exactly what you mean Bassace about the PJB being a bit "taut", it's what set me looking at other amps although when the room booms it can be an advantage! The crazy 8 may have to wait for the moment,I have a week of gigs at Broadstairs in a couple of weeks and I'm trying to get organised for that so not enough time ! I'm going to take a run up the bass direct armed with a little more information now where I can try some of these options,in the meantime I shall be working on my sound the alternative an most important way…..practicing!! thanks again!
22. Thanks for the comments guys. When you say "For all upright gigs the Mline is always enough" Geoff do you mean Mline 4ohm and just a Clarus head,or is the Clarus a combo? I also like PJB 5" speakers and an alternative for me might be a Super Flightcase (300watts),same price as a pair of wizzys, and I was pretty happy with my Fightcase (150watts) just needed more volume occasionally. I don't play electric bass at all so my focus is on DB.
23. .
One quick side note on the EA wizzy cabs is that the 12" Mline is far superior for upright than their regular 12" wizzy IMO. I've got both and the regular is a great cab, but it's all about the Mline for me and I'm sure the Eden wouldn't be comparable due to the difference in cabinets. The Mline has some crazy porting. I've also heard great reports of the crazy 8 and would love to try one.
Thanks for that Geoff ,after some of my own research I have come round to the Mline 12"as you say. I recently bought a AI coda series4 which sounds great but I need more volume/power. I was thinking of buying an EA wizzy 12 Mline 4ohm version. I figure that with the AI combo sat on top this would give more watts although I may be making a mistake mixing ohms like this .I realise the wizzy would be doing more work than the AI cab but this may not be a bad thing. The AI cab to me is only usable for acoustic gigs without a drummer,it sounds sweet at half volume but struggles as you turn it up.I could then add a second EA wizzy 12 4ohm and just use the AI head for bigger gigs as the AI should deliver 650 watts into 2 ohms (i.e. 2x 4ohm EA wizzys). This would in effect give me three setups.Having said all that I open to any advice on offer. I bought the AI combo rates at 350 watts but it sure don't feel like it at a gig,I have been using a PJB flight case rated at 150 watts and there not much between them…..!!! I'm also not sure whether the AI speaker outputs are series or parallel or what difference this would make…..??? AS for the crazy 8,looks interesting but would really want to try first, most reviews seem to be from builders rather than users!
