1. Oh man, if I was in the country right now I'd rip your arm off for this. If you still have it in April let me know
2.
For the money USA Fenders cost they should be getting it right every single f***ing time.
Exactly - often I feel the second hand prices are more fitting for a new Fender given the crap you often have to deal with. It's probably the reason I've never bought one new or unseen.
3.
I`m the same with Precisions. Tried active basses, passives, all different brands, wanting (I thought) a mulitude of sounds and all sorts of tweakability, and finally realised that the Precision is the bass for me. I do like a deep chunky neck though, and my `77 is just right. It really does feel like a baseball bat cut in half.
+1. Tried everything, but this is what works for me.
4. £1,200's fair. Times are definitely bad.
5.
This band is all originals, the venue was a kind of poncy London bar/resturant type, should have seen it coming really. The sound was shocking as well. Does anyone else think that playing in London is a complete waste of time (unless its a decent support slot)? For original bands that is. I love playing live even if its to nobody but the attitudes from most promoters/venues are soul destroying.
Does seem it can be. A lot of my friends formed bands in London while at uni there - most failed miserably, one even dropped his dreams of working in the music industry because of it. I like my status in a yokel 'provincial' band
6. Youtube's playing up for me, but you must give FOPP by the Ohio Players a listen.
7. Love it with the covers on, looks like you got a bargain.
8. We got knocked out of a booking for not being heavy enough. Promoter/lead band cited 'artistic differences'
9. Wow, that's lovely
10. He's a great player, but I've also found his tone a bit lacking - lifeless, somehow.
11. I've been thinking of piecing together a Precision with a Jazz neck out of parts - I'd love to finish it in Sonic or Daphne Blue with a matching headstock. I'm pretty sure I'd balls it up since I have no experience at all, but this is turning out so well I migh have to try it.
12.
The 'Bandito' one is awesome, I'd put it on a MiM Jazz Bass if I had one. It's such a monstrous kitsch, that I simply love it!
I'm trying to get my entire band to adopt cowboy-themed scratchplates for this exact reason
13.
Send it back, it's got a crack in it.
14. I guess it's pretty good for slapping. Coat acquired, leaving commenced.
15. I played a LPB Precision Special years ago when I was looking for my first Precision. Massive sound, and yours is far nicer than the mullered one I saw
16. My one-of-a-million but one-in-a-million Fender, thanks.
17. Good call - I believe the Jazz pickup cover is a bit skinnier than the Precision's. It's going to look (even more) sharp
18. That's not helping my Sandberg GAS.
19. I had one of these as my first 'proper' bass. It was something different to learn on - cheap and cheerful pretty much sums it up.
20. My world just got worse.
21.
If thats how you see it then thats cool that was my point, I do not see it as ok and was checking with the community to see if people felt the same way as I do. We all have different beliefs and I respect that. Still though I have not heard one reason for why these high end basses cost a lot more and we are not talking just a few weeks of saving. I know people have a problem with how I feel about this (look at the last few pages ha ha) but the point was to hear how and why these prices can be justified and am still thinking that they cant. Every post has said about there over heads are high or they are that the skill these luthiers have warrant this price, or have questioned my beliefs or ideas, but still no reason to explain to some degree rationally why there basses cost so much more.
That's because there isn't a rational reason behind it. I believe Machinehead said you should look up Veblen Goods right at the start of this thread, which was pretty much the perfect response. If you won't take overheads or skill or materials as a good reason (all of which I do), all you're left with is that they can charge what they charge because people will pay it. Maybe they could make the same bass for 10% less, but why should they charge that when people will pay the extra 10%? Rationality goes out the window when high prices are involved - you could have a Squier P Bass which in a gig setting makes almost all the same noises and costs nothing compared to a Fedora, but many feel that Fedora is just worth the extra. It's not for you or me to say how much profit a luthier should make from his work. I suspect a skilled luthier would want a comfortable life just as much as the next man. I wouldn't expect them to live in student bedsits in a pious attempt to keep costs down.
22. Go on, I've got covers on both my Ps. Always a conversation starter, usually people asking what they're still doing there
23.
Were they Tunnocks? I like those.
Nah, Asda Rich Teas. If I'm setting my own prices I like to keep it cheap.
24. That looks grand. +1 for chrome covers
