1. Onwards with painting. Primer was done despite the spraycan packing up on me - it ended up spraying unevenly. Once it dried I sanded it down and it came out flat and even - close one... Pretty chuffed by this point, so today I decided to do the colour coat. Unfortunately, it came out pretty poorly - a few runs and some ironic orange peel. The colour is spot on though (it doesn't look nearly as bright in real life) so looks perfect from about 6 feet away. So, plan is to let it harden over the week and sand it down flat next weekend, then either give more colour coats if it needs it or just go straight to clear coating. Honestly, I'm not after a perfect finish but I'd like it looking nicer than it is... we'll see how it goes I guess.
2. I gave the neck to a mate of mine with the tools for the job, and got back a headstock I'm very chuffed with. The freshly-sawn wood came out bright compared to the rest, so I sanded and oiled it and now it matches perfectly. I'm still in two minds about glossing the neck - it's my preference, but I think I want to see how it plays first before putting the effort in. Out of giddyness I mocked it up for the first time - the neck pocket is the tightest of all my P Basses! (are you reading this Fender? )
3. I got one of those P-Bass kits for Christmas, so I figure I may as well show you all how it's going since interest in them comes up every so often. Everything you need comes in the box, right down to the strings. All you need to do is paint the body, finish the neck (if you want) and carve out the headstock. The body feels great - it's a three-piece and looks to match my real-deal Fenders very closely. The neck isn't bad either, more shallow than a regular P neck but nice and wide. The hardware isn't anything to write home about but I'm planning to upgrade as I go. My plans are basically a Capri Orange (ish) body and a '51-style headstock. Depending on how it turns out I'll look at glossing the neck, fitting chrome covers and a thumbrest, but to be honest this the first thing like this I've ever attempted so I'm just happy to be building something. First off, I got myself a template for the headstock from the depths of the internet, and stuck it on with a pair of tuners (I did straighten it out after I took the photo )
4. I wouldn't worry too much about the thumb rest or chrome covers. Cheapos from ebay will fit the bill (I added both to my '97 P Bass and they're identical to the originals on my '77). If you need them aged just scuff them a bit - the ones on my '77 aren't that damaged and they've been on there for the life of the bass. I could send you a picture for reference if you want. Just noticed you asked about the shape - the chrome covers available new now are the same shape as the '70s ones. As for the screws, Madison's might be the best bet.
5. Cheers for the advice everyone - I'll get sanding this weekend No doubt I'll be back for advice on whether to gloss or oil soon enough!
6.
Lol , thanks yea weight issue would be a big no for me with my dodgy back !
You'd have to try before you buy I guess - mine is one of the lighter of my basses, but I've tried some proper heavyweights which I didn't like at all!
7.
What's the problem with 70s fenders ? Sorry if it seems a silly question , I am on the lookout for one and would be good to know !
A lot of people complain about sloppy QC, poor build quality and massive weight - to be honest, you just have to try the basses you're looking at to see if you like them (as with any manufacturer...) You can't have my '77
8. Well I don't mind putting the effort in, so I think I'll sand it all down and stick a tinted lacquer over the top. Any advice on how best to sand it? I'll use a block on the flat surfaces, but is there any good way to sand evenly down the neck? Does it matter what grit I use? Thanks
9. Mine's mega heavy, I kind of like it though. I only really notice when I play it, go to pick up one of my other basses and it comes flying off the stand...
10. Hi all, I've been given one of those 'build your own bass' kits by my family for Christmas - brilliant present, but I'm a bit stuck when it comes to the woodworking. I'm completely new to anything like this, so forgive my silly questions So, the headstock comes as a blank so you can shape your own, and I've gone for a '51 P-style affair. I've just had it back from a mate who owns a jigsaw and it looks grand. However, where the wood's been cut it's come out bright white compared to the rest of the neck. I wasn't expecting this as it felt unfinished (and it says so on the box), but I guess it is. To be fair I only own basses with gloss or painted necks, so unfinished and light finish all feels the same to me... I was planning give it a gloss finish like my old P Bass, but if I do so now it'll look mismatched.. which brings another question - would I be able to to spray the gloss straight over the satin-y finish it has now, or do I have to sand it off first? If so, with what? Also, if I decide to keep it how it is, what should I finish the newly-sawn bits with? Would oiling it darken the colour to match what's already there? I probably haven't been that clear, so here are some pictures to show what I'm on about Thanks for any help chaps
11. Crybaby Bass Wah 105Q, white, in top condition. It's a few years old but I've only had it out of its box for about half an hour total! Comes boxed with original instructions. £60+postage (I'm in Southampton if you want to pick it up) - SOLD!
12. I bought a Peavey T-40 from Jan/Rocker19. He couldn't have been nicer to deal with - unbelievably patient and helpful. The bass also made its way from Slovakia so well packed it was still in tune when it got here! A true gent
13. Always had a soft spot for Carmen. Flamenco-influenced 70s rock with Jethro Tull's John Glascock on bass. What's not to like?
14.
Can we ask for her and get a bc discount
She told me she couldn't give discounts, so I tried the I'm-your-son angle. She was having none of it
15. Bought a speaker cable and a chrome bridge cover from Jono. Super fast delivery and ace communication

Sold my old Ric 4003 to Stevie - was a pleasure dealing with him
17. A bit off topic, but my Mum actually works for Thomanns on their international hotline. The reason emails get a delayed response is because they get a fair few a day (!) and all of them are answered by an actual person who speaks the language the email was written in. Naturally, that stacks up fast, especially around deals or Christmas. They also answer the phones (so many of you have probably spoken to her) so if you want things sorted it's best to give them a call rather than send an email. Be nice though, no shouting at my Mum
18. Bump for another price drop - if it doesn't sell in the next week or so I'll stick it on eBay.
19. I'm selling this on behalf of a mate - any questions and stuff I'll refer to him unless I can easily answer them myself. It's a Fender Custom Shop '1951 "Nocaster" Relic' in the classic nitrocellulose Butterscotch Blonde with a bakelite pickguard. As you can see, it's a heavy relic and very 'worn in' to play. All original Serial number: R7408 - I'm going to text him to find out what year that makes it, unless one of you chaps can get there before me All hardware etc is period correct as per usual Custom Shop Standards. Comes with a classic Fender tweed case and a modern SKB case, A Jen-You-Ine leather strap, A Fender Whirlwind Accusonic lead, Ashtray Bridge Cover, Plastic selector switch knob, Extra capacitor for original wiring, Fender Custom Shop Plectrums (!) and the Certificate of Authentication. He's asking £1,700 but is very much open to offers. He's after a US Standard Tele (ideally in the same colour-combo as this one) if anyone fancies a trade with money his way. For now it's pick-up only from Southampton - the thing comes with two cases, so posting could prove difficult. I'll talk to him about it. And now for some porn: Cheers
20. 1. '71 2. '00 3. '58. Number 1 sounds a lot like my '77, which is how I like my Ps to sound
21. Looks like a legit Jap Jazz to me, I'd be very happy with that for £250.
