1. Here we have my old GK Backline 115 - I bought it new about 8 years ago. It has a tilt-back shape which was brilliant in cramped rehersal rooms, and it was plenty loud to handle small-medium gigs (function hall size). It has a pretty modern sound which went perfectly with my Stingray (which I've since sold). Now for the bad stuff. No bones about it, it's in terrible shape. It has (had) a carpet covering which, after many gigs and clumsy roadies, has been left battered and worn. It was in storage for the past 8 months so is currently lightly dusted in cat hair which I'm in the middle of getting rid of. Several of the plastic caps on the corners are cracked, but none are missing. The good thing is that it works, despite its looks. It had a very scratchy volume pot which was replaced last year and is now fine. The on-off button was replaced with it (it was a bit intermittent). I won't say the amp has a history of total reliability, but it's never let me down at a gig or a practice and it's currently working perfectly. These amps sell new for anywhere between £250 and £300, so given the ugliness of it I'm asking for [s]£100 £80 [/s]£70. I'm open to offers of course. Pickup from Southampton, but I guess I could do some limited moving around if needs be. Pictures: Cheers
2. I'm very happy with four - the Rick will be sold soon and hopefully replaced with something more up my street. Then again, one of them is a duplicate of my old Precision (which I'd rather leave at home for the rougher gigs). Does sound pretty different though.
3. I could post it I suppose... shall I keep an ear out for the sound of a smashed piggy bank and angry kids coming from the north?
4. Just a little messy to play is all. Like I said, the neck on it is straight and stable. Like I also said, there's nobody near me with the experience to set this one up - as you say it isn't easy. I've found plenty of people who could but they're all a little far from home (I don't own a car)
5. Ha, cheers chaps. Everytime I look it at it I do question if I really do want it gone
6. Ahoy, Here we have a 1983 Rickenbacker 4003 in white, all original and with the original case. I bought it this time last year and whilst I like it, I'm not sure it's for me. If it's got the interest I'll sell or trade... if not no biggie. It's a bit of a rare one. Being an early 4003 it's got reversed trussrods and a split pickguard to access them. At this time they were also fitting two extra screws to the bridge to stop tail-lift, so no tail-lift! It's quirky in being one of the ones that came from the factory with the 70s-style wavy Grover tuners - apparently Ric ran out of their regular sets around this time so used surplus ones they had hanging around. Some mention having problems with these old Grovers, but the ones on mine are all perfect. It's also white, for extra cool points. It's coming up to its 30th birthday and it's in pretty good condition. The chap who had it before me (guitarist) barely played it. He'd bought it from a shop in the States 10 years before and it's spent all of those 10 years in the case. The white's mellowed to a nice cream and all the electronics work perfectly. Neck is straight, no issues with the binding, tuners all work brilliantly, mucho life left in the frets, all good. The only things worth mentioning condition-wise is that there's some light checking/cracks in the finish on the two horns and on the fretboard laquer at the dusty end. You can't feel them if you run your finger over them, so it's just mojo. There's also a bit of laquer missing below the E-string near the 4th fret. It's about half the size of a finger nail and you can't feel it when playing. The only other thing is the sticker for the 'Bass-tone' knob is missing - I may replace it just to tidy up the looks (obviously if I do I'll include the original knob in the sale). I've included pictures of all the damage so you can take a peak Must point out that it really needs a set-up, but chances are you'd get it set up to your own specs if you wanted it anyway. No luthiers near me are very confident with Rics and since I don't gig this thing and it's playable, I've not worried. Price-wise, I'd be looking for £1250 but would be open to sensible offers. I'd also be happy to trade, preferably with money my way - things that'd tickle my fancy would be a T-40, a nice Yammy BB, maybe a nice Jazz... I like my basses to have 4-strings, traditional looks and passive electronics if that helps . If nothing comes along I'm happy to hold onto it, but it's just not getting played. I'm based in Southampton, but can move around by train if needs be. The case is tatty but functional - I've not decided if I'd be happy posting it but we'll see. And now, smut: EDIT - This may be sold! Have a chap coming round to have a look this week, so it's on hold until then
7. Lovely - with a nice refin that could make a great player's bass. Good luck with the sale
8.
The 4004 is my favourite looking one!
Same here - I'd take one in Mapleglo with silver hardware over my 4003 in a heartbeat.
Out of interest does the 4004 sound exactly the same as a 4003?
Not exactly - the 4004's a bit fatter and darker. Very similar though.
9. Lovely, if I decide to (and manage to) sell my Ric I'll be having this
10.
Stop worrying about whether or not you should like it and ignore what anyone else thinks.
This. I've owned mine for about a year and whilst I've never completely loved it, I really don't understand why they get so much flak. Actually, maybe I just don't get why people who don't like them get so particularly worked up over not liking them. It's common for a particular bass to have vocal fanboys, but why do Ricks have such vocal anti-fanboys? For instance, plenty of people don't like Warwicks - myself included - but threads about them don't regularly turn into a Warwick-bashing sesh.
11. My 4003's bridge pickup is absolutely punishing live, I love it. Just struggling to love the bass it's attached to
12. D'you mean neck profiles (C, U, V etc, as in cross-section shape) or neck widths (A, B, C, D)? A slab board neck has thick a thick rosewood fretboard that's flat on the bottom (where it meets the maple), rather than curved to match the radius on top. I think I have that right...
13. Mace Spray - Jezabels. Such a huge sound and not one bass in the mix
14.
And of course some peoples' talents do not lie in writing crowd-pleasing material. They lie in writing crowd-displeasing material, which is why they're staring at an empty room. Mission accomplished.
Yup - I could be in yet another 3-chord pop-punk band, hate the music but get a big crowd. Instead I play music I like to nobody. Lots of peace and quiet, it's lovely
15. Argh, I was going to post my 4003 for sale next week. Godammit Hall, now even less people will want it
16. Just bass, started at 12. Thinking about picking up mandolin though
17.
Ah well Im glad we've cleared that one up
You mean no 12-page debate?
18.
I think it's something to do with snooker.
That's a relief. My first thought when I read 'pocket' was how to fit into the ones on my trousers. Could've been a very messy evening.
19. What is this pocket you all keep talking about? Why do I need to be in it?
20.
Personally I think its a mix of cultural influences and your own personal makeup.
That's a bingo. Though often I find it's a case of just 'getting' something - used to hate indie-mope-rock, but now that I'm in a band that does just that I suddenly see the appeal.
21.
Oli Sykes, from Bring Me The Horizon. Please don't punish yourself by digging any further!
I dug, and now my brain's bleeding
22. Lots of cheap Rics on here of late... was thinking of selling mine but I'm not sure I can compete Tis lovely though

Yamaha BBs

I love my BB5000. It's a monster, even in it's 80s-tastic gold hardware
24. No problems myself, but my Mum was in a band that used a knackered late-60s Transit none of them could afford to fix. The back would be filled with band members, equipment and several gallons of water to cool the engine every 2-300 yards
25. Once had a guitarist who painstakenly tuned his guitar before going onstage, and then got the headstock stuck in a curtain. Expertly detuned, he then tuned it open-mouthed infront of the 800+ crowd whilst encouraging me and the drummer to tell them jokes so they wouldn't get bored.
