I put an Ashdown ABM compact cab (115) up for sale on eBay with a 'buy it now' price of 170.00 With 36 hours to go, someone made me an offer of 140.00. I replied stating that I would accept 150.00 on the condition that it was cash on collection, and I ended the auction early (avoiding the fee of about 16 quid). Sounds straightforward, huh? Half an hour later the same person who'd contacted me had bought the cab at full price and paid the money by Paypal! I haven't had any contact since (roughly 12 hours). Is it just me....?

I won't repeat what's been written already, but I love them. You can customise and upgrade them easily (just swapping colours of the pickguard can give them a new lease of life). They stay in tune, you can drop them and they survive, they look good shiny and new, or old and battered. But the main attraction for me is the tone that cuts though. They just have a punch that cuts through the mix. And they're the epitome of rock n' roll. And when the end of the world comes, the last things to survive will be cockroaches and Fender Precisions.

How about the Ampeg SVT 7 Pro? Brand new for under 600 (I've just ordered mine) Or, jumping on the promotions wagon, I have an Ashdown ABM Evo II 900 head for sale for much less than your budget.

I would suggest keeping your options open until you find one that feels, plays, and sounds right. I've been trying out MIM P's over the last few weeks and had the same trouble as you in deciding which model to go for. Two identical Precisions that I tried out felt entirely different in my hands. One was a joy to play, the other felt like a plank. Yet they were the same model and cosmetically identical. One of the things to weigh up would be the neck. The newer 'standards' tend to have slimmer necks with a modern profile, while the models trying to emulate anything 'vintage' have the vintage radius and feel chunkier. Also, the fretboards can be a flatter profile on the 'new' models (which is something I prefer). In a nutshell, the best advice I could give would be to find an individual bass that looks, feels, and sounds right for you.

ABM Evo II 900 In good used condition. The odd scuff here and there but nothing that's gone through the tolex. This is the Evo II - so British made, rather than the Evo III which I believe is Chinese made. So...I hope to have a sweeping poll to help me decide. Markbass 6 x 10 - 1200 watts @ 6 ohms or Wait for an Ampeg 610 HLF?
-
I'd love a Barefaced cab. But despite any hints I leave on here, Alex hasn't offered an endorsement yet... They're out of my price range - more than double what I'd pay for a second hand MB or Ampeg.
-
He is indeed a beast. Only needs to mikes up the kick, and leaves a pile of sawdust in his wake! Being up against a Mesa rig doesn't help either. They have that James Hetfield sound that drowns out everything that dares to want sonic space in the mix.
-
Thanks for the input. It's an SVT 7 head, so no problem with the impedance (and I probably wouldn't want a ported cab with a valve head if that were the case). Does 'natural sounding' mean that they produce the tone of the amp without much colouration, or is that a polite way of saying they sound bland?
-
Can anyone tell me what the tone is like from a Markbass cab - ie, the natural voicing. I'm looking at pairing a 6 x 10 with an Ampeg head but don't want to mismatch. I've played through 15s and 210s, and combinations of the two before, but only with LM heads.
-
Now thinking about a Markbass 6 x10. I like the weight and the obvious quality but does anyone know if it would match up with an Ampeg head in terms of tone? I almost feel as if the two brands contradict each other with their 'sound'.

£300 to spend on backup bass - recommendations?
sixdegrees replied to citymariner's topic in Bass Guitars
Regarding the 5 string option - I got myself a 5 string as a back up but found that the extra string and the closer string spacing took a while to get used to. Not ideal if you want a back up to grab mid-gig. Unless you use the B string as a thumb rest. And that defeats the object of having a fiver. But that's just me. Some people can switch back and forth with no problems. -

If it's a back up bass - stick to what you know and feels familiar. I've carried an Epiphone Thunderbird and an OLP 5 string Stingray as back up in the past but these are different beasts to my Fender Jazz. The Thunderbird was much longer than the Jazz, and I kept having to look down at my fretting hand. And also had to wear it lower (they only look good when low-slung). And the 5 just confused matters as they take time to adjust to if you're used to 4 stringers. Anything in the vast Squier VM range seems to be calling. And add the Matt Freeman model to that list maybe? -
How about mail order? Strings direct and strings and things offer next day delivery and are very well priced. One thing I forgot to mention was the 'A' string. The 'A' string is an 80, while the 'E' is 105. I found that the 'A' lacked a little punch. Almost as if it were a lighter gauge replacement compared with the other 3 strings.
