Advice on fretless with narrow string spacing, 4/5 string
AndroWal replied to zawinul's topic in Bass Guitars
I have a Zon VB5 Fretless I'll sell. I'd be looking for $2400 USD plus shipping. It's like new..built in 2010...has a trussrod and lines...sounds great! 16.5mm spacing...same as Wal 5-strings...it's an ash body with amber staining...a beauty, headless, with case, excellent. -
Andro, I still need to got on with doing the M4S lite tuner ordering. My MkII 5 used to mainly sit unused, but now that I've joined a new band I'm using the 5 nearly everyday, and my 4's are sitting unused. I need to reduce some mass at the headstock for my upcoming loooooong gigs.
Mike! You will be very happy with the M4S Lites. Here is Lars' contact info. If you eMail him directly he'll alert as to how to order online i.e. select the 4-string set in the finish you need and then in the comments for your order write-in the 5th tuner you need: Schaller Electronic GmbH Dr. Lars Bünning Geschäftsführender Gesellschafter Managing Director – Owner An der Heide 15 92353 Postbauer-Heng Deutschland/Germany Nbg. Thank you!

Just doing a switch of my M4Ss to M4SLites...already did this on my Mark 2 Fretless and it makes a world of difference. Although not light basses, now they are really balanced. This one is a 1990 build...I've had it since new and it's in just about like new shape. Stained Maple facings...they're a bit green also and I suspect they did a chemical wash in addition. This bass sounds fantastic.

Fretless string recommendations (Wal / Fender)
AndroWal replied to Mr Bassman's topic in Bass Guitars
DR HiBeams...40-120....been using them for years on all my fretlesses.....Wals, Zon, Fender Jazz, Custom....smooth, bright, growl, don't seem to eat-up my fingerboards i.e. my 1992 Wal Fretless Mark II 5 has been my main bass over the last 22 years and I've only had to dress the fingerboard once in that time. Really great sounding strings...very responsive a bit more flexible which I like. -

My four 5-string Wals all have 16.5mm spacing. Mark II 5-strings do tend to be heavy...I have two of them...and some are well balanced and some have heavy headstocks, thus neck-dive. I have mitigated this wonderfully by replacing the tuners with M4S Lights from Schaller. These are direct replacements and look exactly the same as the original tuners, but are much lighter. My Mark II 5s sound and play great. So much sound, booty, growl, punch, clarity,...you can get so much from them. I haven't played any other bass that can match a Wal for its true "bass-ness."

I have one also and a few months later purchased the extension cab with 1x12 and tweeter. Makes it all even better! More air moved....easily fill a room of 200 people......probably more....

I have a J5 in the works with Martin and Chris. Really excited about it. Looking forward to having a great J...

NBD : Custom overwater contemporary jazz
AndroWal replied to pierreganseman's topic in General Discussion
Looks great! Beautiful. I have a J5 24 in the works with Martin at this time. We have discussed having the angled headstock...... There's been posts about the idea that angled headstocks make the strings feel stiffer...not as flexible....what is your experience with your Overwater J with the angled headstock? Thanks! -
https://soundcloud.com/user537693 "Falling Face the Sun" and "Protected" are my Wal Mark III Fretted 5 with Shedua facings. No pick-attack...bridge pickup favored, tone shaping flat. https://myspace.com/...ula/music/songs On most of the tracks I use my Wal Mark II Fretless 5 with English Sycamore Facings (Bridge pick-up only with pick-attack engaged, tone shaping flat). "Cathedral" is my Wal Mark II Fretted 5 with Maple facings (I recall bridge pickup favored slightly but maybe both on full...pick-attack engaged...tone shaping flat). "Protected" and "Falling Face the Sun" are again the tracks on Soundcloud. All examples of great Wal sounds!
Cool! Next time I visit I'll have a look. Should be up there in the next few days. RK
It is early on....just a deposit and a "job sheet" at this point...but who knows...maybe Martin will have picked the body wood! We had a great talk today.

Yes! I have a J24 5-String in the works. Really looking forward to it. I've been wanting a 5-string Jazz for a long time.
-
Beautiful bass! Did Overwater keep to the build-time they stated when you contracted for the bass? Thanks!

I respect his musicianship, his energy, the time he has spent attaining where he is, his accomplishments including these videos, having the gigs he has, his relationship with Zon, his notoriety in the world........
I don't think so. When I was looking for this bass I tried three others - they all had the same spacing as mine. I'd never be able to play a bass with 16.5mm spacing!
I have two Mark II 5s from 1990 and 1992 respectively, a Mark III from 1996 and another III from 2003. All 16.5mm! String-center to string-center....
