Refinishing Gloss Black Body with Nitro
JPJ replied to nationofzeros's topic in Repairs and Technical
This is a telecaster body I refinished using nitro in rattle cans from Rothko & Frost. To make sure I got a good finish, I stripped it to bare wood and then primed with grey nitro primer and finished with about six top coats flatting each one. After 6 weeks of curing I wet sanded with 2000 grit paper then hand polished with three grades of finishing compound. No lacquer was used. Personally, I wouldn’t clear over black. -
One of my earliest recollections of becoming aware of the bass as an instrument was when a boyfriend of my older sister brought his Precision bass to our house. Must have been mid-Seventies and he’d just bought it so it was the big TV logo, and that look has stuck with me since.

The contrast between the stain and the binding looks great and it sets the bass off beautifully. That’s going to look really classy with chrome hardware 😎

Haha someone else on the same journey as me. I’ve played for years with a smooth bass heavy ‘fat’ sound believing this to be the best, but then I had a tonal nirvana moment when I realised the power of mids. I now have a much more snarly tone that just sits so much better in the mix and I’m using the same amp and cab, just different eq and more recently the addition of a SansAmp.

My small but perfectly formed bass board. Does everything I want/need and a lot more.

So after a week of playing around with the X3 I am very happy with the purchase. I have made a fundamental pink torpedo-up in the layout of my board as I put the SansAmp before the X3 in the signal path which meant occasional clipping of the Sub’n’Up. This weekends task will be to put the X3 in front of the SansAmp which will hopefully solve that.

There are a few, and the most obvious one is the PJB Briefcase combo that would probably suit your needs.

Barefaced Price Increase - Are They Still Worth It?
JPJ replied to Ultima2876's topic in Amps and Cabs
I'm surprised its not more to be honest. I was talking to a builder pal the other night and he was telling me most materials are on 3 month lead times now. Good quality plywood is extremely hard to come by (I know one expedition camper van builder who is three months behind waiting for plywood deliveries) house bricks are now close to £1 per brick, and there is a shortage of roof trusses! As a small business trying to balance the books I can fully understand why Alex has had to increase his prices and I would expect order lead times to increase too. -
Its fine if you shim your monitor 😉

I was hoping to stimulate just the type of debate we're having. In my forty years of dabbling in bass, loudspeaker performance is one of the biggest changes I've witnessed yet we're still basically repeating the same formula. I always feel I learn a lot from threads like this, so please keep the debate going.

Second vote for the Katsu one. I think I paid £22 from eBay for mine and its perfect for the smaller jobs such as pickup routes and also for making scratchplates.

If my experience with Selectron UK is anything to go by I'd say its time to move on to another brand.

I once saw a guy playing bass in a pub band in Hull and he used the full TE stack of 1x18, 4x10, + Brightbox. Fortunately he was a tasty player as he certainly cut through the mix 🤣

Currently (and for quite a few years) I’ve gigged using a single 8 ohm SWR Goliath 4x10. Prior to this I’ve gigged the 6x10 Goliath Snr, two 4x10 Goliath’s, and the combination of the 4x10 and the Son of Bertha 1x15. All great combinations, but the relative portability of the single 4x10 wins for me. Over the years we’ve seen monster single cab solutions such as the Mesa Boogie Powerhouse and Trace Elliot 4x10 + 1x15 in a single box, and of course the ubiquitous Ampeg ‘fridge’ 8x10, and then more lately a flurry of lightweight 1x12 options alongside innovative designs from the likes of TrickyAudio, Bill Fitzmaurice, and Barefaced. Watching some pro players it seems the 4x10 + 1x15 is still liked, alongside the 8x10. One of my own favourites Geezer Butler prefers a mix of 12’s & 15’s on stage. So if money was no option, and there was a road crew to lug it around for you, what would be your choice of cab and why?

So further experimentation last night showed that the multi band parallel matched the patch I used on my SpectraComp but that the Rudy Sarzo TonePrint is going to be my go to on the X3. Honestly, this unit has to be the bargain of the century given how many boards you can build/tweak without spending money or going through the pain of rewiring your board.

So this arrived today. Only had 30 mins to muck around with it but so far I’m very impressed. Obviously a lot of the default preloaded boards are aimed at our guitar brethren but I was able to get a pedal board setup ready for tweaking in no time at all. Looking forward to spending a bit more time with this tonight 😎

Law of diminishing returns. It’s a question of how steeply the bottom end rolls off in a cab. You can be 6db down at 40hz compared to 80hz so if I’ve got my maths right the 40 hz will be 1/4 as loud as the 80hz but I’m sure someone cleverer than me will be along to correct me 😂

Valeton Bass Dapper multi-FX. Some might say this is a clone of the bass Flyrig, this pedal contains 1) boost/compression 2) Dirty Q envelop filter effect with switchable fuzz 3) bass preamp with gain, treble, mid, bass, and volume controls that does a passable Sansamp 4) octaver with two filters and a wet/dry mix 5) chorus 6) built-in tuner On the left edge there is a DI out on XLR with ground lift, and on the rear 1/4” sockets for input, bypass thru, separate effects loop send & return sockets, and the main output. All the above housed in a sturdy metal enclosure in a fetching shade of metallic green. Comes with original 9v PSU and original packaging. Bought on a whim, and only used a couple of times at home so in perfect ‘as new’ condition. Priced at £75 + postage.

You would think that wouldn’t you. Except, and I’m certainly no expert, what we actually ‘hear’ when we play a low E or B is the 1st harmonic (82hz for E and 62hz for B). So as the human ear can’t discern much below 50hz except with very good headphones, everything below 50hz is waste in a live music situation just eating up amplifier power and loudspeaker cone excursion for no audible gain.
