  1. So I decide to not go down the repair route and instead picked up a secondhand head version of the same amp. Unbelievably, TC use different sized bolts and bosses to attach the feet to the head version than the combo version but after a rummage through the parts drawer, the amp is now safely installed in the combo and all works as it should. Downloaded the Spectracomp TonePrint to the amp and all is well again 😎
  2. Well spotted sir, the hang tag does indeed say RS940TV
  3. You built this with your dad? Sorry, but I’d say leave well alone. That type of memory/nostalgia is priceless, especially when your dad is no longer around. Buy yourself a Hercules stand and celebrate the originality.
  4. As I said on FaceAche, I love a story with a happy ending. And boy does she sound good in that video (and shock horror I prefer the clip with the flats).
  5. Well it’s certainly a factory fretless, I’ll check the original hang tag and let you know 😉
  6. I blame Nigel Tufnell, now we just turn everything up to eleven 😂
  7. I’ve run a few preamp & power amp setups over the years but one thing I’ve never been sure of is how you should set up the ‘master’ volumes. To explain, I fully understand the relationship between the pre & post levels on the preamp as these mirror the function of pre and master levels on any regular bass amp. But where should the volume control on the power amp be set? Should it be 100% and control the overall volume from the preamp post control (unlikely as very noisy), set to zero db on the power amp and control the overall volume from the preamp post control, or run the preamp post control at 100% and control the overall volume from the power amp volume control, or something else?
  8. Sister from another mister to my 1982 RS924 fretless
  9. In all honesty, my two main basses are both five string Overwaters, a 35” J series and a 36” original series. I don’t “feel” a difference between the two.
  10. So the long wait is over and DHL delivered my finished body today. Got to say it’s rather excellent. It will need the minimal amount of fettling as everything is tight (very tight), but I’d rather it was like this than the other way. Looks like a quality piece of timber and the finish is flawless. Please ignore the gratuitous mock up shot, that’s a standard Fender five string scratch plate that will be used as a template for a custom made BWB scratcher to suit the Bartolini 5 string P pickup. Of course as luck would have it delivery has neatly coincided with a really busy time in the day job so there will be little to no progress with this in the next couple of weeks.
  11. I’m selling this on here at the moment 😉
  12. I’ve read through the build threads and unless I’ve missed it, there’s one question I think hasn’t been answered. Is the physical proportions of a cab as important as the internal volume. Obviously, there are a few fixed dimensions (diameter of the speaker, length of the port) but other than these practical limitations will a short deep cabinet perform differently to a taller but slimmer design?
  13. I really fancy building a couple of the MkIII cabs but whilst I’m a proficient wood butcher, I wouldn’t trust myself to assemble the crossover without a fair chance of a spectacular failure. So here’s a thought, if there is a fellow basschatter with the reverse skill set, I’d be up for bartering my time assembling a cab for you if you’d build two crossovers for me? Material costs to be covered by each party.
  14. I think NickA hit it on the head, slow market at the minute
  15. Still here, and today I found the manual so it’s now complete.
  16. I have the same amp with the same problem. Been quoted £100 to replace the power amp section. I’ve popped the lid on mine and sadly no fuses to be seen.
  17. Current project I’m rushing to finish before the weather turns too cold for spraying in my workshop (shed😊). Surname water slide transfer from Rothko & Frost, precision bass from a cheap eBay water slide transfer.
  18. Sweet holy mother of Jesus 😮What a great little setup. Anything that sounds like an Avalon gets my vote. Genuine GLWTS, if my lottery numbers drop on Saturday night I'll be all over this in a flash.
  19. You're probably right. I seem to recall that the outcome of the heft debate was it was not the amplifier topology but the power supply that mattered and that switch mode power supplies were the cause of the lack of perceived heft in modern class D mini form factor amps?
  20. Another vote for the Beyer DT770’s here. A big plus with the Beyer’s is the availability of spares. I’ve just changed the ear cushions on mine, with most other brands I’d have been shopping for a new headphones.
  21. The PJB one-knob is I believe technically a limiter rather than a compressor? That said, it’s the most musical one-knob compressor I’ve used. The Spectracomp is my go to for everything (unless I’m using either my SWR Marcus Miller preamp or SM1500, both of which have full five-knob compressors). There are a few TC heads and combos (I had a 2x10 one a while ago) that include the Spectracomp circuit.
  22. I’d recommend anything by Phil Jones Bass. I would have recommended the TC BG250 208 but having done some research since mine went bang, it seems they’re a little unreliable.
  23. Thinking out loud here. I’ve been around the bass world for a fair few years now, during which time I’ve seen the quoted ‘power’ of your average bass amp and speaker go through the roof. That, in combination with the death of my little TC Electronics BG250 208 combo (not that this was gigable) got me thinking. Is anyone producing a really gigable combo that could serve as a practice amp at home? I’m thinking something innovative, akin to the SWR Redhead when that first appeared. Maybe a two or three-way design with a proper mid-range driver? Maybe one for the cabinet designers on here to consider? Thoughts?
  24. There are still a few of us who are prepared to put up with the weight in exchange for oodles of heft. As to the pedals, I feel a Geezer winging its way to me once they’re generally available. I’ve been a good lad and I’ve sold an amp and a EUB so I’m allowed to treat myself 😊
