What is the most expensive bass rig money can buy?
JPJ replied to Truckstop's topic in Amps and Cabs
Well out of curiosity I've just added up the replacement cost of my current rig Anybody know any good insurers for musical instruments and amps etc -
Sorry to resurrect an old thread (Easter pun!) but I recently bought a Terrorbass 500 of our own Garethfriend of this here parish and gigged it in anger for the first time on Saturday night. Hooked up to the Schroeder 21012 it was a lovely fruity burbly fat bass tone. Mine has uprated valves which stay cleaner longer up the gain range, and I loved the springyness of each note that you normally only get with a full valve head. As the gig was a multi band charity do, I also got a chance to listen to this rig off stage as the headliners used it as well and im pleased to say it filled the room (80-100 punters) with big fat bass without any pa assistance! Best of all, with the cab on castors, the whole rig, leads case (road trunk) and bass was a single trip from the car! Whilst this rig won't be replacing the SWR rig anytime soon, it will be getting regular outings at smaller venues.

Just to throw my twopenneth in here, I was in a similar position last year, had been wanting to try DB but didn't have the space to keep one at home. I went with the Stagg option and have never regretted it. Apart from the different scale, you'll be amazed how quickly you convert, and as a consequence of playing walking lines on the EUB, my electric bass playing has improved to boot. There is a bit of snobbery about the Stagg driven mainly by the price, I mean if it only costs 'that' much it cant be very good can it? Well, its true that you have to change the strings and do a little bit of fettling (shielding the control cavity, foam to stop the end pin rattle, a damper of some description behind the bridge) but once you do this you'll have a very playable EUB that does a very convincing (to my ears anyway) DB. My advice is just do it, buy second hand and with the Stagg you can almost be guaranteed to get your money back if you find its not for you or want to progress to a DB and need to move it on,

Wow that's pretty close to my perfect P bass (I'd have gone with a tort plate). Lovely colour too, wonder what it would look like with bridge & pickup covers mmmmm

The cab will be wired as two parallel pairs, each pair serially connected. Take one red wire from the crossover to the plus side tab of one of a pair of speakers (say the top two). Take another lead from the minus tab of that speaker to the plus tab of the other speaker in the pair and then take one of the black leads to the minus tab of the second speaker. Repeat the process for the other pair of speakers and you should be cooking with gas

Before I say anything, I must declare I'm an SWR fanboy! I've previously owned a 750x and I'm of the opinion it's a great amp. Very easy to get a good tone and a very loud 750w! Pairing that with the Goliath Snr 610 should make for a killer rig. As to whether you can make it sound like Mr King will in part be down to your hands, part your choice of bass, and part your choice of amp! If I recall correctly, Mr King favoured the Trace Elliott and later the Ashdown (signature) graphic eq'd heads to shape his unique tone. Sadly the 750x, as good an amp as it is, doesn't give you the precise tonal adjustment that a twelve band graphic equipped amp will. If you really want the Mark King sound I'd suggest that neither the SWR or the Markbass is going to cut it for you. The Ashdown MK heads come up for sale occasionally on here and on eBay, and I've recently seen the monolithic Ashdown MK combo on eBay too (provided you've a strong back!). If that's the sound you want, then this would be a much better choice IMHO.
Why other manufactures don't do this is stupid.
Agreed! And at the price point of the Terror Bass it's obviously not an expensive thing to do! The cynic in me thinks its perhaps that other manufacturers are more interested in selling you multiple cabinets to get full power output from their amps?

Looking around for a lighterweight amp head for smaller gigs and rehearsals, I've been looking at the Orange Terror Bass series. In the specs on the Orange site, it mentions an impedence switch (4/8ohms). Does this allow the the amp to put its full rated output into an 8ohm load? Sorry for the dumb question, but if it does, this could be the answer to my prayers!

I guess it depends on the band your in. If your in a tribute then I'd say you'd better learn every note and nuance of the original bass line. If your in a general covers band, it's probably enough to know the main shape of the line and augment this with your own interpretation. In my experience, on stage it's better to simplify than over complicate parts. Stay true to the original version and you won't get too many complaints.

Looking for a 5-string Jazz with a narrow nut width
JPJ replied to dannybuoy's topic in Bass Guitars
No dimensions, but I remember my old Fender Jazz DLX V ('96 anniversary model with all five tuners in a line) had a narrow nut width compared to my other 5 stringers -
(Any idea what you'd replace it with? I'd imagine its not something that can be easily replicated)
Thanks for that, and there lies my problem. I love this amp but by god she's a big girl if you know what I mean! I'm hearing good reports of the Genz Benz Streamliner 900, and really liked the sound of a GK Fusion 550 (but worry that this might be a little underpowered). In truth, I'll probably end up keeping her and just spending more time at the gym until I can lift her on to my cabs on my own lol

Anybody got a feeling for how much my SWR SM1500 is worth in today's market? She's a serious piece of pro kit and one of the first in the UK. I'm the second owner having bought her on here from BGTAndy. She's housed in a shock mounted flight case. Sounds-wise, she is my tonal nirvana, and I'm only contemplating selling her due to her weight and my advancing years!

Agree with the other members, second hand is the way to go, especially as there are some great bargains around at the moment. As an aside, wow how far have the BassCentre fallen?

Ooh the Jack Bruce looks canny, I could defo fancy a fretless one of them :-)

People who make bass bodies on Basschat?
JPJ replied to sockdeluxe_mikey's topic in Repairs and Technical
You'll get lots of +1's from the North Eastern contingent for BassDoc Howard, who whilst being a living legend in these parts, is also a thoroughly nice bloke as well. -
Downsizing... DOWNSIZING! Has that eye op' affected your back?
No heavy lifting allowed! I might just look for a 4ohm cab for those smaller gigs and keep the SWR head and Goliaths for the bigger gigs & rallies as I love the tone (and volume lol)
It never made it into production. The 550 is a briliant amp though, personally I wouldn't buy it just for the valve pre-amp, I'd rather go for the 2001RB (I think the 2001RB has a good warm tone and even break up without sounding harsh, they also sound very similar), but if you want the memory banks between the different patches then it does the trick and sounds stunning.
Cheers for that. Amazing that, I wonder what Soundslive would do if I ordered one off their website! Thanks for the info.

I'm seriously thinking of downsizing the 'rig of doom' and having heard the Fusion 550 in action and being impressed by the authority of the tone, I was wondering whether any Basschatter's had anything to say about the Fusion 1050?
