1.
+1 This is why I always wonder why people obssess over getting an acoustic bass when their bandmates buy acoustic guitars. Unless they're wild about the acoustic tone they'd be better off just using their electric basses as they'll need an amp anyway and would be better off putting money towards a small, portable and capable combo amp.
Yep, that's where my head is this morning and I'm thinking PJB as I love my Bass Buddy preamp. I'm also thinking possibly of a self build small powered cab to go with the Bass Buddy. Time to get the old fretless out me thinks
2. What a great thread, I've a secret hankering for a DB but with no space to keep one. I'm loving your colour choice, don't rush the final finishing, it'll be worth the wait!
3. Resurrecting an old thread I know, but has anybody got hands on with the Rockbass version of the Warwick Alien? Thomann have them at under £500 for the five string version which is really tempting me!
4. I don't illegally download and get most of what I need from iTunes. I obviously need to check out Spotify, but this whole downloading debate does make me laugh. When we were kids one friend bought an album and the rest of you copied it on to cassette (for the young ones, google cassette ). Nobody seemed to mind back then, and just like today, the materials to make 'illegal' copies were freely and openly available.
5. Merry Christmas one and all
6.
Having a snoop around google, does anyone think it could be a BC Rich Eagle?
Or an early Alembic?
7. We ordered three separate items from three different suppliers (Play.com, Wickes, Screwfix). On Tuesday, all three emailed us to say they would deliver yesterday (Wednesday) unless we contacted them to arrange an alternative date. Using their helpful web tools we rescheduled the deliveries for Today (Thursday) as we were going to be out all day Wednesday. Guess what, three delivery vans (two from the same firm!) roll up at 6.00pm yesterday (Wednesday) just as Mrs JPJ is arriving home, with the three deliveries. And then this morning we get three emails confirming the change of delivery date and that our goods will be delivered on Thursday as requested!
8. Line6 G50 here, used with five string basses with no loss of signal/tone. The thing that surprised me was the cable simulator thing, it really works! Battery life, I seem to get around three gigs worth out of it (about nine hours if last Friday is anything to go by) but agree that the indication is good so you dont get caught out as long as you change them once the indicator drops to two bars.
9. So Mr Hunt, if I was to wander into the Fat Ox on Friday night, would I hear the Bolin in action?
10. My dear old Mum says that I'm the best
11.
Glad I used the BFB Compact... anything heavy would have been a nightmare.
I'm surprised that after standing behind that line-up that your Compact didn't become a Big One Mind you, i dont think it was very nice them making you stand on a box all night. We're you on the naughty step or something?
12. Depends on the band. One guitarist, double the guitar part, two guitarists pedal that A like Chris Boardman
13. Here's my band from a 'dress rehearsal' earlier this year just prior to the first gig with the current line-up The Dirty South And if you liked that we streamed the whole second set from a recent rehearsal (without the hats and shades ) live on the internet. The Dirty South rehearsal And just to send you completely to sleep, here's a bit of footage shot by our lighting guy at a recent gig We ended up at the Grand Hotel, the place was empty cold and dank And finally the reason why you should always check the location of the smoke machine before setting your gear up Smokin' baby!
14.
I've heard JPJ's band do this song and they do a fine rendition other than far too slow... oh and too quiet! I am of course leaving myself 'wide-open' for when he get to come and see my band do a similar set to his.
Now your just being kind! The words "slow" and "quiet" are not normally associated with the Dirty South Might have to have a trip down to the 'Ox to check you boys out
15. Got to be the Slade on hasn't it. Mind you when I did a stint with a cabaret band (i know I know, the shame of it ) I was sick of playing it by the end of the Christmas party season in January BTW, why do people have Christmas party nights in January?
16.
I'm sure JPJ's band do it spot on, though.
Haha but sadly no! We do our own version, completely unrehearsed because the two guitarists hate the song with a vengeance. Normally by the time we play it (first encore) nobody in the room is too bothered as the alcohol is taking it's full effect so no complaints so far BTW try playing it at a bike rally, we did SHA straight after the Sons of Anarchy theme and the True Blood theme, I thought the tent was going to implode with the amount of pissed up bikers dancing and singing along
17. Like it or loathe it, punters love it. I play in a southern rock tribute band and if we didn't include this in the set, then i think there'd be a good ol' fashioned lynching
18.
Yeah I know what you are saying and I agree that the price might be unaccessible to some, but I am always moving a lot of gear and I have got a nice float of savings, certaing things might be expensive but if you can afford it they are worth it. For example the cab comes with a high quality speaker, http://professional.celestion.com/bass/pdf/BL15-400X8.pdf best money can buy for the amp, all the valves settings are ceramic, so none of the cheap plastic you get with Mesa or other expensive brands, the components are all first class, everything is hand made and I have seen it with my own eyes at the factory, so in a way you pay for quality and this amp has the lot.
Oh don't get me wrong, I'm at that fortunate stage of life to be able to afford one of these if I wanted to, a statement which probably sounds vulgar in today's economic climate. My point is that premium components or not, it's a lot of money for a 30w combo which is going to be of limited practical use other than recording or quiet practice. For me, who would only be able to use this for home practice, I guess it's going to be the Little B'stard and my Schroeder cab
19. Line 6 LD300 This is the amp that changed my opinion of 1x15 combo's. Ok some of the modelling settings are a bit too processed for me but you can get a really decent sound out of it, and it's loud enough to gig (I know because I used the same amp at a 'back line provided" charity gig).
20. Looks lovely but £1200!!!! A little bastard head is £399 so that's a lot of money for the 1x15 cabinet. I really fancied one of these when I first heard about them but at that price for a 30 watter rules me out I'm afraid.
21. A thing of great beauty. And it looks like it will be nice and light, but well balanced due to the extended top horn. Now if this was finished in a high gloss translucent green then........
22. Camera phone shot of my rig from stage left! SWR SM1500 + 2xGoliath 410's The reason I'm struggling with a bad back today!
23.
With the paint a clear coats confidently cured I got to polishing today. It's very hard to show just how highly polished I got it (the flash kills it) so I took some grainy flash-less pics...
A little trick I use on yacht paint jobs is to hold a wooden or plastic ruler end on against the painted surface in natural daylight and read off the reflection in the paint. Best I've seen on a yacht is 110mm before the reflection started to loose distinction. It's not a gloss reading (good gloss meters are bloody expensive!) but it gives a good indication as to the quality of the finish.
