Best I've seen on a yacht is 110mm before the reflection started to loose distinction. It's not a gloss reading (good gloss meters are bloody expensive!) but it gives a good indication as to the quality of the finish.

I bought a pair of their Eurolive powered SRM450 clones for rehearsal. They were bloody good for what I paid and the band I bought them for still use them as foh coupled with a Behringer powered bin. For anybody starting out either with foh or back line, the behringer stuff is a good low cost option. Sure, it isn't going to perform like Mackie Db Ampeg etc but it is a fraction of the price. Reliability can be an issue, but this can also be an issue on far more expensive kit. If your looking for low cost starter gear you'd be mad not to try it.

I find that only active basses with 18v preamps need the built in pad on the active input. All my 9v actives run better through the passive input IMHO. That said, I tend to leave the eq on the bass fairly flat and use little tweaks to compensate for room dynamics etc. This might not be the case if you whack everything on full on the bass.

I'm fascinated by threads like this one. Main stream equipment suppliers seem to ignore Hoffman's Iron Law and I'm guessing that both my cabinet setups must be hugely compromised in order to produce what I consider to be a very musical sound. Recent point in fact, a band I dep with occassionally use a Mackie PA rig. They normally use the 1802 (2x18 powered bin) for the bottom end but have recently bought a Thump bass bin (1x18). Now whereas the 2x18 bin is an awkward 2 man lift, the Thump can be carried by one person and is only slightly larger than the 18" driver. Ok, it doesnt kick the bass out like the 2x18, but it does add a lovely warm tone to the rig, is bloody loud to my ears, and is ideal in smaller 'pub' type venues. Am I right in assuming that the Thump is compromised and is making up for it with sheer power (1000w 'rating')?

Yep, you'll need to play with the string pickup heights. MM are not brilliantly balanced and the G end needs to be as close to the string as poss. Yes, they do go all phasey if too close, then run the other end of the pickup further away to get a good balance. The screws go into proper inserts in the body and use proper springs (unlike Fenders) and so are easily adjusted, even by fingers if you press the pickup in. 3. Pluck where you like the sound, I use my fingers and rest my thumb between the pickup screws. Comfy, sounds good, fine. Rest is up to you. Variation is the spice of life! 4. Output signal should be pretty strong. Those huge magnets and massive windings (especially on the very early ones) give a healthy output. Maybe too far from the strings? One of the most powerful sounds from a bass.[/quote] Thanks for that, most helpful. After seven gigs and a couple of rehearsals I think I've got the neck set right with the pickup height about right. Might need to drop the pickup slightly on the bass side as it didn't sound right on the B string tonight (pronounced audible 'click'). I've got to say that after my initial struggles, this is turning into one of the easiest basses to play!

One head, four cabs! SWR SM1500 head (weighs a tonne, but worth it) 2 x SWR Goliath III 4x10's 1 x Schroeder 21012 1 x vintage Hiwatt 4x12 with celestion G80b's (weighs a tonne, hasnt moved out of the garage in years). For the big shows with the main band its the SM1500 with the two gollys, for smaller shows with the blues rock band then its the SM1500 with the Schroeder.

I've recently picked up an early nineties MM Stingray five string and have the following questions which I thought you guys might know the answer to: 1) how long does a battery last? 2) what's the best string to pickup height (to close and it sounds choked, to far and it sounds weak)? 3) is it just me or is the tone very dependent on whether you pluck over the pickup or in front/behind? 4) the output signal is not as hot as my East equipped Jazz'es, what do people think of the East MM 3-band circuit? I'm loving playing the bass which sits lovely on the strap and the neck is to die for. Fits really well in both my bands, but I do find it a little harder to play than my East equipped Overwater J as it's just not as sensitive to the touch. Any and all advice will be greatly appreciated

Not seen or used the 350's but Im guessing they'll be a similar design to the 450's

My SM1500 is 67lbs plus flight case and I can (just about) carry it on my own. I do need help to lift her onto the top of my 2 4x10's but by god is it worth it. Having that much headroom available is great especially with the low B. Overkill, probably, but she'll be gigging with me until I can't lift her anymore (a bit like the wife really)

For recording, I now only use a Phil Jones Bass (PJB) Bass Buddy preamp direct into the desk. I get such a lovely warm tone this way, and a couple of engineers have commented very favourably on the built-in PJB compressor!

TIA[/quote] I've also got my 1996 USA J DLX V up for sale on here! Mine came with sealed back Fender badged machines which look suspiciously like Gotoh's to me. I replaced mine with Schaller ultralites and still have the original fenders as well. I could be pursuaded to put the stock Fender's back on my bass and sell the Schallers if your interested? As to the QC, the neck on mine is really well drilled with all the holes uniform. Could it be that somebody has opened out the holes in your head to fit bigger elephant ear open back tuners before realising that you cant get 5 of them in a line on that headstock? Also, my bass has a ferrule pressed in to each tuner post hole from the front. If you dont have these, you'll need to get a set to refit the original type machines.

I used to be a 15's man, then became a 10's man. To me, 10's felt tighter and more responsive plus, and probably because there is normally more 10's in the same box than 15's, I've never had 10's crap out on me and fart the way some single 15's have in the past. I've tried the 1x15 under 4x10 option, and found that the 15 wasn't really adding anything, so I now run two 4x10's. But on Sunday we played a charity do, back line provided. I had to use a 1x15 Line 6 LD300 combo, going up against 2 Marshall powered 4x12's and apart from the fact it was sitting on the floor and could have done with being lifted up a little bit closer to my ears, it coped really well with my 5 string, even at the quite high on stage volumes we play at. Perhaps 15" speaker technology has improved to the point where I should look again? Maybe a well designed 1x15 sitting under my Schroeder 21012 would be my perfect setup, as I love the clarity of the Schro but find it lacks that real low end thump? Oh gawd, here we go again........
