How to turn a chrome control plate into gold?
JPJ replied to DaveMuadDib's topic in Repairs and Technical
If your handy, why not buy a piece of gold plastic sheet used for making scratchplates etc and make one out of that? It will then be shiney and gold -

WITHDRAWN SPECTOR euro 5 poplar burl £700 PRICE DROP £700

FWIW I run two Golly III's under an SM1500, both have the shiney chrome speaker grills and I haven't had a rattle out of either of them. My first one was part of a trade so difficult to put a 'value' on, whereas my second one cost £250 but to be fair was in a well used condition. Yep, the are heavy but I can lift them on my own, and they make a righteous sound imho

Most B&Q stores sell steel sheet that's punched in a variety of patterns. It's not cheap but will be cheaper than having one custom made.

My two-penneth is that when playing a 34" B string, I feel a 'lag' between the pluck and the note developing its full bloom. On my 35" I don't feel this. This might sound daft but I spend a lot of time listening to my bass through headphones and I can definately hear this lag

I've got them in my Overwater paired up with a J-retro and they give a big fat full sound, slightly retro, but they can snarl and snap as well. You can hear them on this little demo Here Setup: Ultra Jazz -> J -Retro (set 'flat') -> SM-1500 (set 'flat') -> D.I. into SD9 desk mixed in with SM-1500 through Schroeder 21012 through unknown high end room mike into SD9.

Why Doesn't Anyone Change the Bridge on a MM Stingray ?
JPJ replied to WHUFC BASS's topic in Bass Guitars
Surprised no one has mentioned this (sorry if you have and I missed it) but isn't the advantage of the MM design the fact that the saddles on the MM are locked against sideways movement by the two outer bolts whereas on the Fender the saddles can move laterally (albeit constrained by their neighbours and string tension)? Most replacement Fender designs make a lot of the fact that their design locks the saddles in, but this could just be marketing bullsh1t. I know that on some cheaper copies of Fenders I'd find the E string saddle would move away from the A string saddle after a while, but in truth, I think the only difference was in string to string volume. -
Bloomin' work getting in the way of updates...
Nope, more problems with that bloody top Foolishly, when finishing the woodwork phase, I routed the back of the top to leave it 2.5mm thick at the three-way switch. With all the sanding I've done to get the top in decent condition, that had reduced to a little under 1.25mm. Whilst sanding back the eighth lacquer coat, I noticed that the top had split from both mounting holes for the three-way and was about to collapse! So i've had to make a Dutchman to go in the control cavity, stick this in place, then machine a round edged groove where the switch slot was, so that the switch now sits slightly recessed into the top. It's actually turned out quiet well and I'm pleased with the result but this has put the finishing back a bit as I've had to stain and finish the new groove to match the rest of the top. I'm away at the present, but will post some pictures of my solution at the weekend.
Hi I would like some more infos : which wood is the body made of ? do you have photos of the original tuners ? are they the same as the hipshots or are they the big fender ones ?
Hi Dead, I'm not sure what wood the body is made from, possibly Alder? The original tuners are exactly the same as the Hipshots, except they are chrome plated and weight slightly more! Cheers Kev

At the winning bid of £215, I sure hope it's a simple fix!

Just a quick "no photos" update. The body is now going through the several (i.e. 12'ish) coats of lacquer to build up the shine. I'm now down to wirewool between coats and I'm really pleased with the finish I'm getting. I'm not going to give an estimate of when I'll finish as work keeps getting in the way of progress

Still for sale I have really tried to like this bass but I guess I'm just too old for the low down gunslinger look Played her again last night and while she sounds great, I just can't get away with the body size/shape. Open to sensible offers, i will throw in the brand new uber long leather strap and strap locks i bought for her. Why not buy this and Cetera's and have matching 4 & 5 strings
It's very nice, but why do you people keep buying heavy gear?
To keep chiropractors in work Seriously though, I'm yet to find a lightweight amp/cab setup to give me the tone I like at stage volume.

I'm using the Line 6 G50 which is absolutely bloody marvellous imho. I love the cable simulation too, as I found the raw sound too hifi for my liking, which is probably the result of playing through cables for err thirty odd years

Well a weekend of lacquering and cutting back has left me with this That's eight coats of lacquer, and I recon another four coats will be needed to get the depth of gloss I'm after but this is really looking good in the flesh.

Well after a week of foul weather, the sun finally shone tonight and I've had a very pleasant hour in the workshop flatting the lacquer on the front and the japanning lacquer on the back and sides and loosing the tape line between the two. No sand throughs to repair so I'm well chuffed. She is now ready for the first all over coat of finish lacquer which, weather permitting, will go on tomorrow night. Nothing much to photograph at this stage I'm afraid, but this is starting to look really good
Just bought myself an Ibanez Promethean combo, which I'm extremely happy with, but as usual, a suitable alternative comes along just after I've pulled the trigger! http://www.carvinguitars.com/bassamps/microbass.php What do you lot reckon? I've heard mixed views on the micro Carvin heads, but you can't argue with the bang for buck factor... No UK prices yet, but I'm sure as is commonplace, $ = £ with most cool bass stuff that's built in the US I love the look of that little MB10 combo, but I'm still chuffed with my Promethean, as it's smaller and louder The custom colours are a really cool addition I reckon. Cheers, Eude
Just had a quick look on the Carvin site and I'm liking the look of the MB12

Just a couple of camera phone shots for tonight She's actually much darker in the flesh And the troublesome edge! Didn't get to do any work on her tonight so I'll hopefully start cutting back tomorrow night Enjoy!
