Choosing a Class D head with more than 500W at 4 ohms and no more than £700
JPJ replied to Clarky's topic in Amps and Cabs
My faves so far in terms of surprises being the Orange Terror 500 kicking out peaks easily of up to 900W
The Terror Bass is really loud, and has that neat little 4/8 ohm switch so it doesn't really mind what load you hang off the back of it, it still goes VROOOM! Just had to sell mine due to a change in circumstances but honestly I'd have kept her if I could have, tone a plenty and enough girth/volume to kill most guitarists in a toaster sized box. -
Briefcase user here and can confirm that my Stagg EUB sounds the dogs spherical's through it. In fact, the Briefcase seems more at home with the EUB than with a standard bass guitar (not that it sounds bad with the BG). Not much volume but more than enough for home practice, keeping up with a couple of acoustic guitars. Wouldn't really like to gig with just the briefcase but great when there is PA support for your FOH sound.
Could you quote me for this too? PM inbound.
All pm's replied. Postage appears to be £29 for guaranteed next working day before noon insured to a value of £400 for mainland UK. I'm willing to split this 50/50 with any buyer offering on or very near to the asking price.

Orange Terror Bass 500 I recently purchased this lovely little Orange Terror Bass 500w amp head off our very own GarethFriend on here in February of this year. Prior to purchasing this, the valves had been upgraded to include a NOS Jan Phillips 5751 in the first position and a JJ 12AX7 in the second position, which have the effect of cooling down the gain meaning she stays cleaner a lot longer than the stock valve version and gives much more of that 'British' tone with a smooth less knarly overdrive. These amps include an impedance switch so that they can deliver their full 500w into either a 4 or an 8 ohm load and believe me, these are loud. I've been pairing this with my Schroeder 21012 and even up against a loud drummer and a 100w Marshall equipped guitarist in a loud'ish rhythm and blues quartet, I've never needed the master past 11 o'clock. The amp comes with the original box, the neat little Orange gig bag, a mains lead and an inline DI attenuator. Apparently, the DI on these can be a little hot as it is post master, but on the couple of occasions that I've gigged her, the sound man has either not taken the bass in the PA or had no problem with the normal output, so I haven't actually used the attenuator yet! Price wise, I'm only looking to get back what I paid in February so £360 + postage. I'm only selling her as I am about to be made redundant and can't afford to have money tied up in two amps. Sorry about the quality of the iPhone photos but I'm without a pucka digital camera at the moment. If anybody wants any further pictures, please ask. Cheers, Kev

I must have been extremely lucky when I got my Stagg because quite honestly, its got no real quality issues. Mine was bought second hand from an experienced DB player who had changed the strings and sorted some of the minor niggles. For what you pay for one of these, they are an absolute steal. As to sounding like a DB, well mine does a pretty good impersonation of an amplified DB, especially when I play her through my PJB Briefcase combo. I'm limited to an EUB due to space issues and have tried more expensive NS EUB's but actually prefer the feel of the Stagg. Oh and on a final plus point, mines all black and looks a sexy as sexy can be

SOLD ! SWR 750x £350 and AMPEG SVT410HLF CAB £350!!!

Agreed, these look very interesting. I've fancied a 'progress' type bass for a while, but the Aspirations just didn't quite do it for me. Looking forward to getting my hands on one of the 5 string 35" rosewood ones with maple cap. Sounds like a trip to Carlisle is in order!

What is the most expensive bass rig money can buy?
JPJ replied to Truckstop's topic in Amps and Cabs
Well out of curiosity I've just added up the replacement cost of my current rig Anybody know any good insurers for musical instruments and amps etc -
Sorry to resurrect an old thread (Easter pun!) but I recently bought a Terrorbass 500 of our own Garethfriend of this here parish and gigged it in anger for the first time on Saturday night. Hooked up to the Schroeder 21012 it was a lovely fruity burbly fat bass tone. Mine has uprated valves which stay cleaner longer up the gain range, and I loved the springyness of each note that you normally only get with a full valve head. As the gig was a multi band charity do, I also got a chance to listen to this rig off stage as the headliners used it as well and im pleased to say it filled the room (80-100 punters) with big fat bass without any pa assistance! Best of all, with the cab on castors, the whole rig, leads case (road trunk) and bass was a single trip from the car! Whilst this rig won't be replacing the SWR rig anytime soon, it will be getting regular outings at smaller venues.

Just to throw my twopenneth in here, I was in a similar position last year, had been wanting to try DB but didn't have the space to keep one at home. I went with the Stagg option and have never regretted it. Apart from the different scale, you'll be amazed how quickly you convert, and as a consequence of playing walking lines on the EUB, my electric bass playing has improved to boot. There is a bit of snobbery about the Stagg driven mainly by the price, I mean if it only costs 'that' much it cant be very good can it? Well, its true that you have to change the strings and do a little bit of fettling (shielding the control cavity, foam to stop the end pin rattle, a damper of some description behind the bridge) but once you do this you'll have a very playable EUB that does a very convincing (to my ears anyway) DB. My advice is just do it, buy second hand and with the Stagg you can almost be guaranteed to get your money back if you find its not for you or want to progress to a DB and need to move it on,

Wow that's pretty close to my perfect P bass (I'd have gone with a tort plate). Lovely colour too, wonder what it would look like with bridge & pickup covers mmmmm

The cab will be wired as two parallel pairs, each pair serially connected. Take one red wire from the crossover to the plus side tab of one of a pair of speakers (say the top two). Take another lead from the minus tab of that speaker to the plus tab of the other speaker in the pair and then take one of the black leads to the minus tab of the second speaker. Repeat the process for the other pair of speakers and you should be cooking with gas
