1.
So... what y'all bringing?
Ok, well I'll bring my SWR750x and either one or two Goliath 4x10's or a Son of Bertha 1x15 (depends what the two 4x10s sound like together. Gigging them together for the first time in a couple of weeks). Bass-wise I'll bring my Overwater J 5 and either a Fender Jazz V DLX or my home built P thing. And as Mr Organiser has expressed an interest, I'll bring the PJB Bass Buddy along as well.
  2.
Hahaha, no brown nosing required. The offer of transport is there for anyone who wants it. March 1st looks good with me.
Yep, March 1st good for me too. I'd be happy to give anybody a lift, though it'll depend on how many cabs the organisers want me to bring as to how much room there is in the car.
  3. 1) Who's up for it in principle? Count me in, but the sooner you pick a date, the better, as with my diary at the moment I need at least three weeks notice. 2) Would you prefer a weekend afternoon or a weekday evening? Weekend afternoon would suit me better and I'd have more chance of making it. 3) Would you be prepared to chip in - literally - a quid or two for hall hire? No problems, I'm happy to pay a share. 4) Can we have a strict embargo on the number of Warwicks allowed in the room at anyone time? Yes please, (ducks and runs whilst weaving to avoid thrown objects) Warning: I may wear my basschat tee-shirt, therefore the wearing of sunglasses may be advisory if not mandatory
  4. Timing: the difference between a good bass player and an amazing bass player (and rythmn section too!) I don't think its really about being mathematically right on the beat. For me, it's all about the feel of the song and having the ability to move the beat around that fraction to turn an otherwise mundane chord progression into something lively and interesting and musical.
  5. Ok Egor, my evil plan has taken a step nearer to fruition. First, we buy the black five string version. Then we take our trusty chop saw to the headstock and replace it with a ball end holder. Then we add Status style tuning keys at the body end of the bass. And then Egor, having solved the infamous neck dive issue, WE TAKE OVER ZEE WORLD HA HA HA HA HA
  6. Am I the only one liking the Star bass five string? Now if Warwick would bring out a five string version of the Jack Bruce signature model, then I'd mortgage the wife to buy one.
  7. Whiskey is an old Irish folk song. As far as I can recall, on the original recording, Phil played acoustic guitar so there was no bassline per se.
  8. For me, the forum is fine as is. Having been around here through the various incarnations since Gerald or Gerard first got the idea rolling in the UK, I feel right at home with the Kiwi/Ped format. I'm sure the place needs some finance to keep it going and to maintain bandwidth, uptime etc etc. I have suggested before the pay-to-sell idea where the advertiser pays to place a 'for sale' add. If you look at the number of threads in the for sale sections, even a nominal listing fee should be sufficient to fund the ongoing maintenance and development costs of the site. Failing that, merchandise is probably another fine way to raise income (just look at the uptake for the 'orange' basschat shirts!). I'd be happy to pay a subscription to access this place, but I recognise that others may not either be able or willing to do the same, and I dislike the two-tier approach adopted by some other forums as being eliteist and clique'y (two things I hate with a passion).
  9. Ok peeps, I've gone with the PJB Bass Buddy care of our own Vern-Icepick and wow, what can I say. Big fat warm tone on my home recordings whereas without the PJB it was just a little flat and lifeless. Hopefully, the studio guys will have the same experience later this month. BTW just to clarify, without the preamp and plugging straight into the desk, my J-Retro equipped Overwater J5 wasn't really 'driving' the mic input on the desk. Yes, we had to back the trim gain thing back a bit to stop it distorting, but in backing it off, I seemed to loose some depth or oompth. With the PJB, I can back the gain on the bass buddy back to avoid distortion but still provide a big fat signal to my desk. Does that make sense, I hope so 'cause thats what seems to be happening? Anyway, I'm not/will not be eq'ing the bass using the preamp but I will be horrendously tempted to leave the compressor switched on as this is the most bass friendly and musical compressor I've come across so far and all from just one knob too. Thanks for all the suggestions and the help,
  10. John's preamps are the dogs doodahs imho. I've got two J-Retro's (Overwater J & Fender J) and I've got his BTB & Mid-Stack in my Precision mutant and they all sound perfect to me. Big +1 for John's work and interesting to hear that his Stingray pre is similarly good as my next project is going to be Stingray based.
  11.
Devil's advocate here - but isn't his job to make your bass sound like that and not yours? You just supply the talent!
Oh well in that case the recording project is doomed from the outset, supply the talent!
  12. You have a pm
I have a PJB BASS BUDDY for sale that I got from steve-norris a while back but have hardly used it since It`s a great little piece of kit in great condition,no marks or scratches on it. Comes in padded case with power unit included . I asking £130 for it + postage Thanks, Vern.
13.
I use a Superfly head with the DI output going in to my Yamaha 01x desk, I quite like the Superfly as i can save different EQs/Inputs/Comp for each of my basses, also with the combination of the Superfly & 01X i can save off and recall set up should i need to go back to something.
I was really thinking of something in a pedal format. Whilst my primary need is for this forthcoming recording sesh, I thought it might be useful to have a 'plan B' in the gig bag in the event that my amp went tits up mid gig.
  14.
If you are after a nice clean natural sounding bass sound with a bit of warmth etc you could look at the double bass pre amps like Fishman etc. Dunno might be worth a look?
Cheers for that, I guess this isnt going to be an easy search with all these options. How does your MXR sound in the flesh?
  15.
Don't forget the MXR-80+ DI............ G.
....and another Anybody using the MXR? How does it sound?
  16.
i owned the aphex.. if do you need a comp with a di..it worths to spend money..but if you need a preamp who gives your sound,(as recording bass-mixer), but with a touch of beef....i suggest other. i had your same matter... for recording i used to sound only bass(jazz)-mixer, and i loved absolutly that sound;but since the sound wass very very flat and articulated, it was not easy to play, and i needed a lot of concentracion on my touch to play perfect as a rec needs. I solved this little problem thanks to this: it give the same perfect sound of a super natural jazz bass.BUT with the little beef to allow you to esecute your bass lines easier, and allowing you to give more dinamic to your sound(for example play a note stronger without get harshy and annoing sounds). today i had a rec, and the sound engineer doens't stop to congratulate with me for my execution. he saved the FIRST rec of the bass. yes the hands are important, but this great pre-amp was helpful to me, and it costs as a pedal. listen to this song: http://www.gospel.bo.it/albums/userpics/10...n_po__di_me.mp3 the sound engineer doesn't touch the bass rec,is it absolutely as I played. (both pups open, tone closed)
Thanks for that, another contender emerges!
  17.
I always record using my amp head and usually a cab mic'd up too. Isn't going straight into the desk even with a pre amp a bit dry?
I think the producer wants a very pristine but defined tight sound "almost hifi but with some implied warmth" his words not mine.
  18.
what head do you have got?
Rather predictably from my earlier comment, but my main amp is an SWR750x. We tried this the last time too, but the engineer thought the DI was too noisy to be used and that the miked sound (through one of my Goliaths) was too rock. I should probably mention that I'm recording with a female vox and acoustic guitar duo who just want some bass to widen out the sound spectrum on their recordings.
  19.
Aphex Punch Factory. Adds nice bit of compression to beef up your sound and gives you an XLR balanced DI out to boot. Dial in any extra EQ on the desk.
Funnily enough, I tried both my punch factory and bass exciter on the last session, but found the (digitally) recorded signal to be highly coloured by the aphex DI in a way which the engineer really disliked. As I'll be working with the same producer/engineer team this time, I thought I'd have a look around for something different.
  20.
I would go for the SWR, seeing as it's the best (in your opinion), and it is going to be cheapest now after Xmas.
It'll have to come down in price quite a bit to match the others considering its £699 list price in the UK That said, I have a huge SWR bias so who knows what could happen in the sales Anybody (other than Stuart Clayton) tried one yet?
  21.
Don't forget the Bass Buddy by Phil Jones Bass. Not cheap, but it's a pre-amp, a DI box, a compressor, a superb headphone/practice amp, and a front-end to your computer. (This last I have to take on trust, since I don't actually use that function.)
mmm Hadn't thought of the Phil Jones, more to ponder........
  22. Howdy folks, I recently completed my first recording assignment (nothing flash, honest). For that job I just plugged my Overwater direct into the desk and whilst it sounded ok, I think I need a bit more beef next time around. I've another session coming up in January and have decided I MUST have a preamp before then. I have been thinking about sticking a preamp/di box in my gig bag for a while and am thinking of (in no particular order); 1) Aguilar Tone Pump 2) Sansamp BDDI 3) EBS Microbass 4) SWR Marcus Miller Whilst my first choice is the SWR, the price is a little out of range given that Christmas is just over etc. Anybody using the other options regularly for recording? Also any other options I'm not thinking of?
  23. That V1005 looks tasty. Might have to try to track one down for a look see.

    Nervous before gigs?

I get nervous everytime, but not pukey nervous, just healthy "I'm human" nervous. I have a little routine for pub gigs. I make sure when I strap my bass on that I'm facing away from the audience. I play a couple of notes with the volume off just to clear the forearms and then tell myself "right, when you turn around, your the bass player that these unlucky folks have come to see, now get a grip and get on with it" (or words to that effect, expletives deleted etc). Works for me everytime. Funnily enough, on bigger gigs with intro tapes and a proper walk on from the wings type setup, I'm never nervous. I guess that I feel these gigs are less personal hence no anxiety?
  25.
Internal volume will affect the low frequency response but it doesn't matter how you get that internal volume. The taller a cab the better you will hear the midrange and treble. Alex
I know that that is what the numbers say, but to my ears, a deeper cabinet will always have more roundness to the tone.
