1. Hi, I have just picked up a Washburn AB10 acoustic bass and the G string is quite a bit quiter than the other strings. As these basses don't have adjustable bridges and I think the pickup is in the bridge, whats the best way to go about fixing this? Would gently filing down the groove where the string sits on the bridge making the string sit lower work? Any advice appreciated.
2.
Ha! A friend of mine has played/plays bass for both of these.
Ged Grimes???? If so, I'll be seeing him on June 10 with Simple Minds. Tell him I know all the SM bass lines like the back of my hand so I will be listening to him
3.
Sorry but, for me, wrong headstock and wrong pickup.
Exactly what I thought.
4.
I did think about you two as my most likely local candidates
HEHE ah thank you. I am too busy with the two bands I am in at the moment I am afraid. Otherwise I would be happy to help. I am sure Nick would be up for it if he is free.
5. Herry Barry, what about Nick (Old Horse Murphy)?
6. Oh my god, £20,000 on a bass? I would struggle to spend £2,000. My list would be a Warwick Streamer LX4 which retails about £1,400. If not, then maybe a Fender Jazz 75 Re-issue which retails about £1,700. If I really had to spend some more then I would probably buy an original 70's Fender Jazz but to be honest, that would probably be no more than £2,000 - £3,000 right?
7.
I chuckled!! - I want to say that mine is like the 'and finally' story you get on regional news programs after a particularly dry politics report!
So just to confirn, there's no picture of you at the back with your rack out :)
8. I've not bought a magazine for years as I just read the internet. Most magazines I have looked recently have been 50% adverts although some of the adverts at the back are more interesting than the ones at the front Is BGM still worth getting? Does it have lots of interesting articles or is it mostly adverts? Is Dood one of the boring adverts at the front or more interesting adverts at the back
9. Natalie Imbruglia and Simple Minds.
10. Now Sold to Hodgefunk. Many thanks Dave. Great to meet you and good luck with your studies.
11. Thanks Daz. I really am in no hurry to sell this so it won't be going on Ebay or anywhere else. So if your fortunes change then you never know, it may still be available.
12. Personally, I would say that the complete sense to your thread title would be, When you get right down to it ... there are only two basses, a Precision and a Jazz. Currently playing a Precision but I do prefer the articulation and detail of a Jazz. However, if I wanted power, balls and aggresion then it would have to be a Precision. Cracking looking Precision though Jack.
13. Thanks again for another great list, really helpfull for us who are still finding our way and discovering Jazz. Do you think you could do a trio list of Piano or keys/Bass/Drums as this would be really interesting for me. The list does not have to be whats the best but more of a recommended for people getting into that sort of thing. Oh and more traditional the better if that makes sense.
14. Nice one Gareth. I still think you would had loved the MarkBass combo but they are not cheap. I should get my acoustic bass in a weeks time or so. Really looking forward to playing it with the MarkBass and going for the full acoustic look and sound.
15.
I haven't seen the Cardiacs since the Riverside Club in Fetcham in 1986. Have a bump.
Now I am confused ..... The Cardiacs?????
16. ***** NOW SOLD TO HODGEFUNK ***** For sale is my Squire Vintage Modified Jazz Fretless. A wonderful bass and great for somebody looking to dabble in the world of fretless bass. Never gigged and only used in a studio to record an album so in excellent condition. Looking for £150 plus postage or collection. Located in Camberley, Surrey and any trial welcome. Any questions then please ask.
17. May I ask, do you have one that you are thinking of selling
18. If I lived in Oxford I think I would go to this. What a great opportunity and learning experience for people and such a great price.
19.
Good man - not gonna ask the price as don't want to put anything in the public domain that doesn't really need to be there, but... ...you got your Fender?
Sure have :) Not going to say full details but a deal was struck that I was happy with.
20. All sorted, thanks to Chris and Darren at Bass Merchant
21. Warpaint caught my eye to. I could not work out if they were rip offs or quite original and good. They reminded me of a 90's Grunge band like The Breeders, Hole etc but I did quite like them. Bassist was also doing some interesting stuff.
22.
Off topic but how did your combo work out for the gig?
I was going to reply to your other thread but I will do it here as you asked The combo was great. I didn't really have any problems with my tone or volume but the onstage sound from the monitors was terrible (isn't it always) and so it was drowning me out a little. The soundman had all three acoustic guitars pumping through the monitors as well as the three vocals so I had a wall of noise hitting me. We did keep asking him to turn it down as the singers were finding it hard to pitch. Anyway, once we got that sorted it really sounded great. The other interesting point is I really don't like low mids and I have this turned down to 9 O' Clock. Everything else flat. The soundman said could I boost the mids as my tone was fat and deep and it could do with the mids increasing a bit to cut through. This was using a Precision. So I just turned the low mid up to 11 O' Clock and he was happy. It was great to have that control over the EQ. It was also nice that its so portable. One trip into the venue and one trip out both times with bass, bag and combo. Overall I am very happy with it. I am going to try a few other basses through it though, maybe a Jazz (if I get one) and an acoustic bass which from a band image would be the best bass to use so I will report back on them. We have some more gigs booked up in the next few months so I will keep you posted.
23.
I ordered one just before the hike but they are awaiting stock. I'm glad that for once I had some luck! All the Fender stores have the same price...unfortunately. Give Darren a call, I'm sure he can do a deal for you.
Gareth, for you to start having good luck really is a worrying sign. Perhaps hell is beginning to freeze over and we are all doomed
24.
Something like this perhaps? http://www.fareastguitars.co.uk/usedbasses.htm
Nice looking bass. I think if I was going to get a Jap Fender I would get a 75RI with the block inlays. Still might be an option to do that. They do a gorgeous blue with matching headstock.
