What bassists should have a Signature model?
Linus27 replied to Linus27's topic in General Discussion
Mark King? - just a few... Fender did a limited run of 42 Mark King signatures... Jaydee had some Mark King specced basses... oh... and ever heard of the Status King Bass? I'll give you one guess where the name came from... Wasn't there a Adam Clayton signature bass with one string?
I had no idea Mark King played Fender but then I don't know much about Mark King lol -
Just for a bit of fun really. Just wondering who you guys think should have a signature model bass after them. I think Fender missed the boat on possibly an Adam Clayton one back in the late 80's early 90's. OK, not a great bass player in terms of technique but the name U2 must have been a money maker. What about Mick Khan? Has there ever been a Mark King signature bass?
But... I really like Guy Berryman from Coldplay, he can do no wrong in my eyes... say what you want about the band, but can you argue with his bass lines?
Having listened to a lot of Coldplay, none of the basslines stand out to me as amazing. Have I missed something???

I've definitely read criticisms of Enthwistle here.
I saw a thread on here recently that had some very negative comments about Peter Hook.

Lakland Duck Dunn Skyline or Japanese Fender Precision?
Linus27 replied to Linus27's topic in Bass Guitars
Wow, a lot of Lakland love going on here. really appreciate everyones opinion. -
In my hunt for a Precision bass, I have now found myself at another crossroads. Either waiting for a Vintage Japanese Fender Precision comes up for sale or look at the Lakland Duck Dunn Precision. I know the Japanese Fender is going to be great but I know nothing about Lakland basses. My main concern is the sound. I am really after that 70's Fender Precision gritty growl. The sort of sound similar on the Stranglers song Peaches. Is this something the Lakland Duck Dunn can produce? Is this what it sounds like or is it more of a muddy Motown type of sound? I am also planning on this bass being my main workhorse so I want it to be reliable or sound right. Is it worth me looking at the Lakland Duck Dunn or would it be wise to hold out for th Jap Fender Precision. My budget is about £500 so I am looking at secondhand. Thanks for any advice.
I liked a couple of your lines particularly coming up to the bridge, though I thought that you looked a bit early into some of the apexes... then again I've never been around Oulton Park. Oh and congrats on the compliment from PW.
HAHAHAHA that cracked me up. Nice one
Thats the best compliment from the best person who could possibly give it. No wonder you're made up, any person on this site would be stoked if the same thing happened to them. Enjoy it, you clearly deserve to. Top fella bothering to tell you he thought it was a good job too, he must know how much it would mean to you after all.
Thanks and yes I am still buzzing. So much that I am going out to a toy shop and treating my son to a present, and then buying my wife some flowers and then trwat myself to some cables from Obhm. I'm in a big happy mood :)

Thanks guys for the comments. I really am over the moon about it. I think this comment by below sums it up for me, 'Tis a classic bass line - I think you made a good job of it but even better for the original artist to pay you the compliment. wombatboter, thats a great story. I love The Doors. Riders On The Storm is probably in my top 5 favourite songs ever.

I've been learning a bunch of song and uploading videos of me playing them on Youtube. One of the songs I did was It's My Life by Talk Talk. Paul Webb and Derek Forbes of Simple Minds were very big influences on me when learning bass. This song was the first song I learn't to play on Fretless. Anyway, Paul Webb of Talk Talk has replied to my YouTube video saying, I preffered a fretless in the studio but a fretted live... can't recall why? Good effort... The bass sounds pretty good. I am over the moon that he replied to my video. OK, so its nothing special but its put a big grin on my face and after the sh*t day I have had at work, I am now sitting here with a whiskey and a big grin across my face. Well, it made me happy anyway.
Just to let you kind guys tell you my newest decision..the Bass will stay in my hands..i played the bass again and the sound is so stunning i am not able to give it away. After i decided for this, i polish the bass once more in every detail and an interesting information comes up. The bass was bought in 1974 as a used one, so i try to find out the original birthday of this baby and it is week 50 day 3 in the year 1971.Just the Neckplate was replaced in 1973 so this is why it is a 425*** Serial..thanks for all of you, who told me not to sell the bass...i will honor the history and play it as she has to be played..thank you very much
WOOOHOOO, I am so happy you are keeping it. As it was me that said you should never sell her, I'll let you buy me a pint of Guinness and we can talk bass :)

What does adding a 2 x 10 to a 1 x 15 do to the sound?
Linus27 replied to Linus27's topic in Amps and Cabs
Sorry if I have opened up a can of worms with my original question. Still not sure to go for a 2 x 10 or 1 x 15 -
What does adding a 2 x 10 to a 1 x 15 do to the sound?
Linus27 replied to Linus27's topic in Amps and Cabs
+1 for the 'suck it and see' brigade. ... Unless you opt to go for a cabs that were designed (hopefully?) to work together as a pair. i.e. Trace designed their 1x15 and 2x10 as a set. I assume (some) other manufacturers do likewise. A matching 2x10 should in theory add brightness to your 1x15.
The fact that I have the treble dial turned to full on my MAG 300H head, makes me think the 2 x 10 might be a good idea. My only worry is I don't want to thin the sound out to much. Plus it will be sitting on top of the 1 x 15 and will be at ear level and might sound too thin or trebly. -
I think half the problems with my neck and shoulders is from playing heavy basses, mostly a 77 Fender Precision. We used to practise 3 times a week for say 8 hours a day. Most of the time I would be standing or leaning against one of those bar stools. Then gigs at the weekend. Plus the lugging of gear around. I'm sure its not been good for me.
Here's my non-export IshiBashi 70's P Reissue.. A 2007 model I bought late 07 I think. The Black finish had been withdrawn when I originally ordered for the 70's model, however, I got an email through from my contact at the time who told me I could get the colour I wanted! - Failing that, the sunburst 70's or the natural with Maple neck would have been my next choice. Black on black, 'US' pups, ungigged, never left the house. As I bought it.. New pickguard
YUMMY YUMMY

I have been thinking about this all day now and I can't decide to buy either, Japanese Precision (Basswwod or Ash/Alder) Japanese 51 Precision Mexican 50's Precision Mexican Mike Dirnt Precision Musicman SUB
.......you have 2 Jazz basses - that's excessive!
HAHAHA damn, I've been rumbled. Just don't tell the wife Seriously, the ESP Jazz is one my late father bought me. It's been used on 100's of gigs and was my main workhorse. It's now been retired to be looked after and given to one of my children if they take up bass. So the Fender Jazz is now my new jazz bitch to be used and abused
