  1. Now this is interesting, Rotosound Flats are high tension but boy do they sound great recorded. Just so much presence but yep, I get they are high tension. A lovely alternative is LaBella Low Tension flats. Great tone and not high tension although higher than rounds.

  2. Anyone have any thoughts on what this noise might have been at my gig the other day.

Set up my rig which is my bass direct into my pedal board via a cable and then a cable direct into my amp and turned my amp on and it made a fast repeating clicking noise and no noise from my bass. Plugged my bass direct into my amp with a lead and it still did it. Unplugged the bass so just the power cable to the amp and connector from the amp to the speaker and it still made the clicking noise. I then pressed the ground lift button on and turned the amp on again and no clicking. Turned the amp off, pressed the ground lift button off and still no clicking. So not sure if pressing the ground lift on and off was a coincidence or not but I set up as normal with the pedal board and everything was fine for the entire night. Tested it at home the next day and everything was working fine.

I've played this venue about 10 times with no issues and the only thing different in our entire setup was a new set of lights which was plugged into the same extension bank as I was plugged in to.

Would this be the possible cause, or could it be something else or possibly the amp?

    Wow!!!!!

what a collection. I only knew sting playing a 51 p. Lots of learning to do lol

i love the look also. I’m a massive fan of paul Jackson. During his time with herbie Hancock he used a fender p ash body maple neck for live shows. The colour was mocha.

I actually went i to town and played a 1978 mocha p bass. It was AMAZING but it was 3.5k🙈

I love the sound of ash body with a maple neck. Suits my finger funk style.

I admire your collection. If you do see any please do pm me.

Thank you very much and I agree, an Ash body and Maple neck sounds amazing. I really should have a fretted bass in my collection (you can never have enough fretless basses though) and I think this new Telecaster bass will do just nicely 😁

I wasn’t playing bass back when this bass came out. This is exactly the bass I’m after. Ash body maple neck. Near impossible to find.

I was gonna ask if you don’t play it I would take it off your hands. I then read it’s your main bass lmao

    you lucky bugger lool

It was one of my dream basses as well when I was starting out on bass after seeing Sting play a fretless version. Even if I hadn't, the Ash body, maple neck, black pick guard with 70's look is one of my favourites. However, I also have a fretless neck for it so I have my replica Sting bass and even though I don't gig with it, it's the best sounding bass for recording and used every Tuesday at rehearsals. If I ever see one for sale then I'll let you know 👍

Here it is with my other basses.

A bit of both I’d say. Inflation being passed through into the price because a “new” range can bear an increase more readily than an existing product already on the shelf.

That aside, there is a genuine step in quality between the Player series and the ranges above (Player Plus/Vintera/Mexican Signature models) whether it’s worth the price is personal, but they are definitely more premium instruments.

I have a Mexican Fender FSR 70's Precision that came out around 2018 and the quality is equally as good as any US Fender I've had including the AVII 75 Jazz. It did come as standard with Vintage 62 pickups and vintage tuners and bridge but the finish, playability and build is incredible. I literally walked into Guitar Guitar, saw it hanging up, played it for 5 mins and bought it, it was that good and it only cost £800 new. I still have it now and adore it and it's my main bass for recording and rehearsing.

I'm hoping these new Vintera basses or at least the Telecaster basses are just as good.

  6. Apologies if we have a post like this already.

As we all know, we all suffer from differing degrees of GAS so what's on everyone's shopping list if they could afford it (I can't) or if they find it? This is my current wish list.

    • Fender FSR Precision Deluxe Surf Green (Passive or Active) - Rare as hens teeth
    • Fender Japan 51 Precision Butterscotch Blonde or Sunburst - Readily available
    • Fender Precision American Standard 2012 - 2016 Sunburst or Olympic White - Readily available
    • Ibanez Musician Fretless in Walnut - Rarer than a rare thing
    • Music Man Stingray Fretless - Possibly an option to get my old one back
    • Fender Vintera II 70's Telecaster Bass - Soon to be released
    • Aguilar TH500 - Readily Available
    • EBS Triple Envelop Filter Pedal - Readily available
    • Zoom MS60B Pedal - Done
    • Origin Effect Cali76 Compressir Pedal - Readily available
    • MarkBass, Fender or Ampeg Combo - Readily available
  7. Warwick Gnome I Pro 280w - I absolutely adore this little amp, it sounds incredible, looks super cute but I just wish it had a Speakon connector rather than a Jack connector for the speaker.

Barefaced Two10 - The Speakon seems to be fitted upside down and every time I try to insert the cable, I do it the other way around.

Fender Japan 62 Reissue Jazz - Best sounding bass I've ever owned, its incredible and I've owned it for 36 years but the only thing I don't like about it is its black. I wish it wasn't black.

IMO to get the best benefit of the experience of the whole album being played live, it need to be done by the people on the recording especially when they were an integral part of the song writing process. The two albums I would have been interested in have the ones by ABC and Simple Minds, neither of whom current sport the line ups that made the album in question.

I tend to agree and being super critical of Simple Minds recent line up, I was expecting to be sorely disappointed. However, in this case I really wasn't, however, they really do lack the magic and dominance of Mick McNeil on keyboards.

This was top of my list as well. I've only caught the first two or three songs so far, but agree with your comments and I'm looking forward to the rest.

btw this just appeared on their facebook feed...

I think that is just advertising that it will be on the Sky Arts channel. At the moment, its only available On Demand.

  10. The Simple Minds one was amazing. I'm a huge huge Simple Minds fan and so, very critical of the line up changes and certainly not a fan of the current line up. I've certainly not warmed to Jed on bass and he's has certainly not had the impact that Derek Forbes, John Giblin or Malcolm Foster had on the band. Even to the point of being invisible and having no noticeable impact. However, Jed was absolutely incredible and an absolute monster on the bass for this show. His tone was amazing and even my wife was impressed. He nailed the bass lines and tone of this album perfectly which makes me wonder why he never did previously for these songs. One noticeable difference is he was using a Precision rather than his Stingray that he usually uses which I've never been a fan off. Cherisse Osei on the drums was also superb and a star on the show, what a character. My only criticism was the sound, the bass, drums and vocals was brilliant but Charlie's guitar was way too quiet.

Overall, an awesome show and I hope they release it on Blu-Ray.

As a multi-effects user for almost 35 years now the convenience of having everything in one box with user programmable memories that can be recalled to give you exactly the sound your wanted at the push of a button more than out-weigh any supposed lack of sound quality.

I say supposed, because firstly I never been in a position where I have been able to do a direct A/B comparison between any modelled amp/cab/effect and the "real thing", and TBH I really don't care, so long as the sound that come out of the device is a sound that I want. Secondly IME most analogue devices show degrees of variation between example, so who is to say which variation is the one to be aiming for? Thirdly most modern multi-effects (especially the modellers line Line6 will have multiple versions of the same effect, so if for instance you don't like one chorus model there's another 2 or 3 to chose from. One of them will almost always give you a usable sound. When I'm putting a pre-set together I always go on the ultimate sound and not what the individual building blocks are - for instance I don't use many amp models, and when I do they are often "guitar" amps because I like the sound that they give me. For me that's one of the great things about software modelling, in that you can use sims that you would never dream of putting a bass guitar through at any volume in "real life", but because it's just a model the worst that can happen is you won't like the sound it produces.

My current multi-effects of choice is the Helix Floor. I chose this one based on the assumption that if I went for a lesser model, I'd find something sooner or later that I needed that only the top of the range version would do. For me the LED "scribble-strips" have become absolutely invaluable, so I'm glad that I did go for the full version. I can have a separate preset for each song (and use the Snapshot function for variations within the song itself), which has all the effects tweaked so that my sound is exactly right for the overall band mix each time. After all the other instruments all use different sounds, so the bass needs to change even if it is only slightly to fit into the new mix. The set list function means that I can re-arrange the presets in the correct order for a gig in seconds and then just use the next preset button to select the right sound for the next song (although this has now been superseded by using the computer that also plays our backing to automatically change presets for each song and snapshots within the songs without me needing to be at the pedal to do so and I can concentrate on playing and putting on a performance).

I do all my major editing on the computer using the HX Edit application, but the editing on the device is easy to make tweaks in the rehearsal room to fine tune the sounds completely painless.

The Zoom devices do look like very good VFM. The only downside I have recently discovered is that the cheaper models don't have MIDI so they can't be really be integrated into a more complex set up (and they would definitely not meet my requirements).

Thank you and I'm absolutely loving the option to re-arrange presets in the correct order of the set-list, that's a superb feature.

  12. I'm pretty new to using pedals and have created a nice little pedal board containing my TC Electronics tuner, a Boss OC-5 Octave pedal (my main pedal), an Electro Harmonix Chorus, a Mooer Ambient pedal and soon to be added an EBS Triple Filter pedal. This is all used for my fretless basses to great effect. I'm wondering if something like a Line 6 Helix HX Stomp or TC Electronic Plethora multi-effects unit would serve me better. Is it better to have individual pedals and the quality and output is better with single pedals or are multi-effect pedal boards just as good and effective?

  13. All suggestions above are great but as a simple exercise, just simply place your first finger on the G (3rd fret) on the E string, second finger on the G# (4th Fret), third finger on the A (5th fret) and the fourth finger on the A# (6th fret) and simply play then in sequence going up and down. Make sure you keep your hand flat across the face of the fretboard and the thumb in the center of the back of the neck. Practice this every day and move up and down the strings and if confident/comfortable then move up the fretboard. The more you practice this and get used to it, the more muscle memory you will have and the easier it will get.
