1. This also would be competition, http://www.themusicking.co.uk/westfield-1-...s-guitar-in-red This is what I am looking at for my son.
2. Thanks for the advice everyone, what you say seems to make sense. My son has just asked to play Guitar Hero so this was a good opportunity to get him to try right handed. I tried to explain the benifits of playing right handed to a 6 year old and after a few huffs, strops and arguments later, I think I may have convinced him that learning right handed is the way forward. I think what really helped him understand was I explained that when he writes with a pencil, he only uses his left hand with his right not doing anything. With a guitar, he is going to have to train both hands. With the benifits of playing right handed and the options of buying basses when he is older, he seemed to understand that he can still do all his other things left handed but playing guitar right handed is going to be easier. Now only time will tell if he sticks to it. Thanks again for all your help.
3.
Heh, thanks! It would be cheaper for you to get a 1/2 or 3/4 size Chinese bass and get the nut flipped round and restrung left-handed for him. Then if he doesn't get into it you can ebay it, should only be about £100 for a reasonable starter bass.
Yeah I was just joking. If I go with him learning right handed then you can pick them up from between £50 - £80. I already have a small practise amp for him. Just need to think left or right. Leaning toward making him play right.
4.
I made my son (7) a mini P-bass from bits left over from other projects, its zebrano with gold hardware, sapele back and a p-bass clone pickup. He loves showing it to his friends but is not yet that interested in learning it. Sorry but it's right handed, not a big job to swap the nut over for left-handed stringing.
WOW, that looks superb. Wanna make another one?
5. Would naturally being left handed but playing righted not hinder his natural ability???
6. My six year old son is going to learn bass soon and so I wanted to get him a bass. The only problem is he is left handed. He even plays guitar hero left handed. Does anyone know of anyone who makes a half size left handed bass guitar? I can only seem to find right handed. Thanks in advance.
7.
I'm better than Adam Clayton. ...but I don't think Adam would be up for swapping the gigs he plays for the ones that I play.
I bet your not better than Adam. You may be more imaginitive or creative but I bet your not as consistant or reliable. I've worked with some of U2's producers and they say that he is actually a very good bass player and is one of the tightest bass players around. He just happens to play what fits with U2. I doubt many can play in time and as tight as Adam.
8. I love them and used to own a 1973 model. Lovely big fat sound. Going to get one of the Fender 50's re-issue ones at some point in sunburst after I get my Musicman.
9. They have a red 4 string musicman stingray for 699. Do you think this is new, genuine and in stock? It says available on the website.
10. Bugger, if this Ray had a maple neck I would have snapped this off you before you could say Marcus Miller.
11. It's an interesting point. What originally got me excited about the bass was the role it played in a band. It's a supporting role. The backbone, the spine, the legs of a chair, the chassis of a car. You don't really pay much attention to any of them but when they go wrong you notice how important they are. A chair cam be super comfy but if the legs are buckled then your notice. You take your back for granted but when it hurts then you sure do notice. So, take a bass out of the band and it all falsl to pieces.
12. Yes, please be aware that the SUB has a solid body, so no cut out at the back. You may find this a problem so worth trying one first.
13.
I agree 100% the quality of the new squiers should be celebrated. I think it is awesome that for under 300 you can pick up a quality bass that is solidly built and sounds good and that you could easily gig with
Yes, very true and it means a lot of people starting out can get a decent bass for not much money. Its all good stuff really.
14. Oneday, when I'm really bored and have some spare cash, I promised myself a Warwick Streamer. This stems from back in the late 80's when they had an advert for a light wood Streamer with Ying and Yan inlays. Not sure if its the original Streamer or a Stage 1. Anyway, I fell in love with it and always wanted one. Does Warwick make a decent bolt on neck Streamer bass, either old or current? Never been a fan of thru neck basses so would prefer bolt on if possible.
15.
Anyway, rather than this being a slight on the current quality of Fender, isn't it the case that the current quality of Squiers should be celebrated instead? It seems to me that Squiers have just got far better in the last couple of years. It's a bit like telling Steely Dan to improve because Nearly Dan are doing such a good impression of them.
Yep I agree. It's a case of Fender having to up their game and justify why someone should pay 2x, 3x, 4x more for one of their basses over a Squire.
16. I have a Squire VMJ fretless and its one of the best basses I have played. The neck is amazing and easily as good as a Musicman which is probably my favourite neck. The Seymour Design pickups are also amazing although I do think it could be greatly improved with some better ones. As for the comparison, I think it showed that Squire are currently making top notch basses and as already said, Fender have to really up their game. Tone may be hard to improve as there is only so much you can achieve with basses of this type. However, quality, tonal range, workmanship, playability is where Fender can really take the advantage. In a live environment, the tone won't make that much difference but from a players point of view, playing a Fender should feel so much different over playing a Squire. A comparison would be, driving a Caterham or a Lotus Elise at a race track. They are both very quick, handle superb and give you a great driving experience. Then do the same in a Porsche 911 or Ferrari 430 and your get the same great driving experience but your also be driving a higher quality car, with more comfort, more versatility etc. Fender should be the supercar and Squire should be the sportscar.
17. To me, they are a certain type of bass for a certain type of player. They are light, thin, great necks and easy to play. So excellent for female players or people who want a light bass or are of a slight build. They also sound great. However, not my cup of tea but my wife loves hers.
18. Yeah, I think they are being a bit optimistic with those prices.
19. A couple of Bass Collection's up on Ebay at the moment. Check this thread for links. http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=34573

22.
No not a warwick - but I'm still looking at 5/6 strings as well as 4's - TBH I realy want a lakland DJ5 or similar but there is no way I can afford one. As this is going to be the last bass I can buy for a while I'm having to think really hard about what I want, and the truth is I can't find one that ticks all the boxes in the price range I'm looking at - I know I'm going to have to compromise but it's sooo hard to choose.
What are the boxes that need to be ticked?
23.
A couple of places - but I'm on the verge of changing my mind again!!!
HAHAHA to what? Please don't say a Warwick
24.
I bet no-one ever asks to borrow your bass at gigs though!!!! Actually I always thought it was a bit unfair, I have a really good mate who plays guitar left handed - He always seems to end up paying way more than the righ handed equivalent for his guitars. I am so glad I learnt right handed!!!!! (and I'm so looking forward to getting my 70's Jazz later this week )
So have you found somewhere that has a 70's re-issue jazz in stock??
